🍂Open-source Headless CMS Review: Strapi, Directus, and Payload |
https://dev.to/hunghvu/open-source-headless-cms-review-strapi-directus-and-payload-2p79
|
Open source Headless CMS Review Strapi Directus and PayloadAfter looking at a dozen headless content management systems headless CMSs for my upcoming blogfolio I narrowed the choices to only Strapi v Directus v and Payload v This article presents a comparison between the three headless CMSs to figure out the most suitable solution If you wonder why I chose these headless CMSs in the first place my previous article How to choose headless CMS for portfolio and blogs is a walkthrough of my initial research Strapi Directus and Payload which is the best headless CMS To make the final decision let s analyze the following aspects of these solutions CustomizabilitySecurityDeveloper experience CustomizabilityDo remember that all three CMSs are open source under a permissive license so you can modify the codebase on your own Therefore customizability is technically endless In the case of Payload it is a configuration as code CMS so its admin UI is practically blank out of the box With these in mind let s try to compare what the CMS officially supports Available pluginsWinner StrapiOne strong point of Strapi is its mature marketplace It is accessible either via an admin interface or a website at market strapi io If you need an additional feature there is a high chance it is already available as a plugin That said there is no one click install feature installation is via npm only Draw Directus and PayloadEven though both Directus and Payload support plugins extensions in their modular architecture none has a marketplace Regarding Directus there is an extension marketplace but it is still under development You can check it out at directus market Meanwhile the Payload marketplace will probably not be available anytime soon but it is on the roadmap We will be maintaining a list of both official and community Payload plugins on our website very soon From Payload plugins documentation DatabaseWinner DirectusDirectus supports several different flavors of SQL PostgreSQL MySQL SQLite OracleDB CockroachDB MariaDB and MS SQL You can either use Directus as a wrapper on top of your existing database or use Directus to build a new database from the ground up In a sense Directus is an abstraction for your database like an ORM but with UI and headless CMS is only one of its use cases This database introspection nature gives you extreme flexibility when migrating with Directus either in or out Second place StrapiCurrently Strapi v supports SQLite PostgreSQL MySQL and MariaDB However it is fairly cumbersome to perform migrations between databases and environments From my research it boils down to different approaches between Strapi and Directus Strapi follows a closed source control approach opinionated database generation developers have no control while Directus is a database first platform If you have any experience in solving Strapi migration problems please let me know in the comment section down below It would be great to have a technical explanation of why migration and backup have always been a downside of Strapi Questionable PayloadPayload only supports MongoDB at the moment Depending on your use case this might be a plus or vice versa As Payload is a new player in the market there are not sufficient documents and case studies so I can not form a conclusion on its database aspect Payload v production ready was just launched on July th SecuritySecurity is a highly specialized topic so I do not make a technical comparison on which solution is more secure Instead let s take a look at what security features they offer Authorization access control Draw Directus and PayloadBoth Directus and Payload offer very respectable security control at least one level above Strapi in my opinion They have unlimited granular role based access control down to database field level Permissions are configurable for both APIs and admin panel feature access However I think Payload is a bit better in this aspect as it also allows a wider range of configurations If in Directus you can use role based access control to restrict permission of a user then in Payload you can even set permission from the perspective of an object For example In Directus if you have an editor role you can read an article with draft status field condition if user role editor gt read draft articleIn Payload every draft article field condition is only readable by users with editor role if article status draft gt allow editor role to read This is the same permission as in the Directus example just from a different perspective Second place StrapiUnlike the other two solutions Strapi only has API level access control so it is less granular That is one thing but Strapi also locks admin panel role addition and modification behind a paywall With such an essential feature of a CMS being restricted like this it is a huge downside in my opinion AuthenticationWiner PayloadPayload supports two factor authentication and a wide variety of strategies like OAuth and LDAP for both admin panel and front end application This is possible because Payload uses passport js underneath a very popular authentication library that supports more than strategies Do keep in mind that this was only introduced in the release of Payload v and there has not been much documentation around the feature so this is a downside if you are going to build a large scale project Draw Directus and StrapiOn the admin panel authentication side Directus is relatively on par with Payload but apparently there is no clear way to implement public user registration Meanwhile Strapi does not support two factor authentication or any other admin panel authentication strategies out of the box Strapi s single sign on is a paid feature that is available only on the Gold plan However Strapi offers front end authentication with many different identity providers For example if a user wants to register for an account on your ecommerce store then the authentication flow is as below User signs in with Google or other identity providers on the single page application Goole verifies the identity and returns an access token to the single page application The single page application makes a request to Strapi API with Google access token as payload Strapi creates an end user account based on provided information assuming you have configured the identity provider in Strapi beforehand You have just finished registering a new end user account using Google sign in That said Directus and Strapi have been battle tested for much longer than Payload It is reasonable if you put Directus and Strapi ahead of Payload just by this fact alone Security has always been a critical aspect of software development after all but I will put my trust in Payload this time Developer experienceUnlike customizability and security it is hard to give an objective review of developer experience Experience is mostly subjective after all With that in mind there is no clear winner in this regard and the comparison below is purely my subjective observation when testing the three CMSs Admin UIOut of the three Directus is the most feature packed out of the box If you are a no code person then Directus is certainly a great Vue based option here It even has a dedicated page for the user guide in the admin panel That said Strapi is still a good one if you are into a React ecosystem In between the two I much prefer Directus admin UI It seems like Strapi is trying to be aesthetically pleasing to non technical users but comes at the cost of having too much empty space and a lack of features and I am not impressed by this Payload on the other hand is sort of an outlier here The whole nature of this CMS is to be code first so in a sense it is not very beginner friendly The payload admin panel is mostly for entering content e g blog article content meanwhile other settings such as permissions webhooks field definition and so on are defined in the codebase I suppose you either like this approach or don t and there is no in between DocumentationThere is not much to discuss this Strapi is currently in the th version while Directus is in the th version While some argue they both have worse documentation compared to their previous versions both are still mature projects so they have a large number of community resources Meanwhile Payload just had its first launch a few days ago so there is a clear lack of resources and documentation compared to the other two solutions Maintainability upgrade migration backup deployment This is briefly discussed in the Customizability Database section From my research the general consensus is that Strapi has very poor maintainability support Why is it the case I am not certain It is great if you can help me answer this in the comment section down below In contrast it seems to be a breeze to maintain Directus as it is only a wrapper on top of an SQL database You can either perform database level operations or use features of Directus SDK to help the maintainability process Still both Strapi and Directus are no code solutions and configuring everything via UI might potentially create consistency issues down the road In the case of Payload it has configurations as code so everything can be granularly controlled in a CI CD pipeline With most settings and schemas effectively being defined in the codebase it also reduces the troubles in dealing with low level operations in the database HostingBy default both Strapi and Directus require a separate Node js instance so you cannot host them on the same server as your application Strapi and Directus are fully built applications on their own However I suppose it should be possible via a more advanced server configuration using reverse proxy Between the two Strapi should be easier to deploy be it a simple VM a docker instance or others This is because many hosting providers provide a one click setup option for Strapi due to its popularity Payload is different it is more of a plugin to your existing application In short your Node js now contains both the front end and Payload as the back end That said if you want complete separation of concerns I suppose it is still possible to host them separately ConclusionStrapi Directus and Payload which suits the purpose of building my blogfolio After considering the three solutions in terms of customizability security and developer experience Directus is logically a winner in my opinion However I decide to give Payload a chance this time In general Payload is on par with Directus in terms of functionality but its code first approach makes me want to give it a shot As a newcomer on the market and just recently reached a stable release Payload can potentially be a risky choice but that is something I am willing to take This article is a way to document my research of the current headless CMS market As a newcomer there is still much more to learn so I intentionally skip technical comparisons such as performance scalability edge cases and so on If you are looking for a solution for a large scale project hopefully this article gives you a good starting point This article was
