海外TECH	DEV Community	Fixing my attention deficit	https://dev.to/smeetsmeister/fixing-my-attention-deficit-3l2e	Fixing my attention deficitEver since I am a father of two twin boys my free time has become scarce A few days ago I watched a seminar by the Dutch association for parents of multiples on how to handle your own life as a fresh parent of multiples In this webinar a website tijdbaas nl Dutch only unfortunately was shared You can use Tijdbaas to make an assessment of how you spend your time Do you spend it on the things you love and give your energy Or are you spending it on energy sucking activities you do not really want to do When I got the results of the assessment it triggered me to take a look at how I spend my own time I want to spend more time working out creating content and spending quality time with my wife and boys But how can I make time for those things Deep down I have known this for years I spend too much time on social media I have attempted to reduce my time but I always manage to circle back And the real problem is I don t even enjoy it that much It has simply become my default go to thing to do and before I know it it s hours later The goal of fixing my attention deficit is to be intentional about how I spend my time The default way I spend my time should not be to watch the th episode of my show on that day or to scroll on Instagram But to actually do things I enjoy What inspired me In the last few weeks I read several pieces that managed to come together I am intrigued by Sommer who did a month without Twitter She wrote her findings in a blog post on One month without Twitter She describes that her phone was her actual addiction reaching out to it to prevent a quiet moment This resonated with me Her analogy nails the relationship I currently have with my phone as well Yesterday I read The Attention Diet by Mark Manson you might know him from the subtle art of not giving a fuck This was the final straw to get me to act on this feeling The attention diet is a pretty extensive article to convince you to basically do what I am doing now One thing that strikes me as contradictory is the book Finding joy in chaos by Kevon Cheong The main goal of this book is to help you build meaningful relations and interactions on Twitter How does this play into the whole cut back on social media thing I am trying Kevon mentions in his book that the goal is not to have as many followers but focus on building meaningful relationships with a smaller group of followers This overlaps with Mark Manson s vision of the Fuck yes or no rule on social media Is being connected to this person adding value to my life Does this person group help me grow If the answers aren t a emphatic FUCK YES Then you need to unfollow them Mark Manson The practical stuffI made using social media as hard as possible by using the following setup Disable all notifications for social mediaIOS screen time to limit all social media to a max of minutes per day in total Installed Leechblock as a Firefox plugin to limit social media to a max of minutes per day and none during working hours Completely removed social media apps that can be used in Safari to make it harder Unfollow people on Social media Or as Mark Manson called it the Fuck yes or no rule I started subscribing to newsletters to get bite sized content from creators I love ConclusionThe main goal of fixing my attention deficit is to be more intentional with my time Spend it doing the things I love I will keep you updated on the progress If it all goes well not on social media but in my newsletter	2022-08-10 13:58:56

Some open source investments and Igor library maintainer of Awesome open source alternatives to SaaS You can listen and subscribe to it here What kind of products can be open sourced LibrariesFirst thing first Everything that is some kind of a library or a low code architecture level is suited for open source as it is the basis of open source It s usually something that is used by engineering or a highly technical people That s pure open source and there is no commercial thing around it Databases and InfrastructureThe second type is highly technical tools such as Databases and Infrastructure tools most of these tools are open source and mostly free We can find many great ones such as MySQL Nginx and Nest js They usually benefit from enterprise support SaaS turned Open Source The third type we can see that is emerging in the last years are products such as Novu Medusa and PostHog that can initially offer a closed code SaaS solution They merit from direct connection with the engineers and benefit from being connected to the open source community Many of those products are not super technical and can actually be a source for junior developers to come and contribute their first PR You can find open source solutions compared to SaaS in Igor Awesome open source alternatives to SaaS Make sure you give him a star ️ Monetizing open source products Over the years we saw open source evolving a lot with different kinds of monetization options I will try to touch on some of them here Most of the monetization methods listed below are for open core solutions which means that all the code is public We will have a new article soon about open foundation which is another form of open source where some of the code is open sourced and some of it is not SponsorshipsThis is kind of the core of open source libraries with no monetization or commercial use restrictions That s the purest aspect of open source Enterprise Support Usage and Commercial useThis is the de facto way to monetize open source products We can find companies such as Nest js and Next js offering enterprise solutions That s something that we could see many companies do in the past Today we see more companies offering the next step of open source evolution Cloud Solutions Cloud Solutions with SaaS offeringMany big companies such as MongoDB used to offer only enterprise solutions but today we can see a shift into Could Solutions such as MongoDB Atlas Cloud solutions offer a few types of options mainly SSO audits logs and hosting Founders realized that many of the solutions out there are hard to deploy and maintain by engineers and require a devops team focusing on scalability and observability In Novu You can find a similar offer for a hosted solution The great thing is that it s giving smaller companies solutions for their needs with a relatively low price per month most of them free up to some point These days we can also find great frontend hosting solutions such as GatsbyJS cloud Netlify Vercel and Heroku that are great for both hosting deploying and monitoring apps in a few clicks Releasing features faster There are more and more products getting into the market every day that need to deliver a lot of features Sometimes those things become super complex and the main thing they usually don t have is time A lot of those parts are engineers issues that can be democratized by open source solutions You can use Okta for the identity solution Add Auth for authentication and then use Permit for authorization and you have easily saved thousands of development hours What metrics do VCs look at when they invest in Open Source Products There are many types of open source companies and many of the investment metrics are similar between SaaS and open source such as the founder s background market size and go to market strategy but the one thing that is usually very common among open source companies is that they are waiting for a significant adoption and an extensive user base before they start to monetize their product So if in BB companies the primary metric is revenue than in open source companies it is adoption by engineers and the community Other metrics VC are looking for are ContributorsHow many developers are out there trying to help you with the product and how valuable is their contribution Is it a one time thing of typo fixing Or is it an ongoing contribution for an extended period of time Did they come to put a stamp or to be a community member StarsStars are not an accurate metric for adoption Developers can star your product without using it but it s kind of a metric that shows the stage of the company Kinda the same as ARR Annual Recurring Revenue Not giving a lot of information but showing the stage of the company Community IssuesCan you see a growth in issues every month That s a good thing it means that the community is growing and the product is getting more adoption In conclusionAt the end of the day the main question is whether it s a product that lives in as a community base only or can it be a big company that generates money We can find big open source products over Github that haven t yet found a way to monetize their services even though the product is fantastic It s not expected from founders to gain revenue over the first years but VCs do expect founders to show a strategic plan for doing worksSamsung s first foldable phone might have been the Galaxy Z Fold but most of us want the Galaxy Z Flip The company said as much itself announcing that percent of its foldable customers picked the clamshell option Compared to the Galaxy Z Fold series the Z Flip phones are not as thick not as big and not as expensive While Google s Android team is still getting to grips with the bigger screened foldables when it comes to the Galaxy Z Flip Samsung took the smartphone interface as we know it and well folded it Samsung s Galaxy Z Flip isn t a major departure from what last year s Z Flip offered Unlike the Fold series which has seen a few design changes for it s a little trickier to discern the differences here However Samsung has focused on making the most of the Flip series unique form factor Let s start with the inch AMOLED front display It s the same size as the one on last year s Z Flip but Samsung has added more controls and widget customization and the color theme can be paired with your Samsung wearable if you have one You can still add your own photos to the screen but there s more control over what else shows up here Engadget Mat SmithIn addition to widgets offering weather and calendar information there s a quick settings widget and quick dial options for your closest contacts Unlike the last gen Z Flip you can now delete whichever widgets you don t want saving on swipes You can also access Samsung wallet functions to make contactless payments without flipping the device open ーsomething that was missing from its predecessors On the Z Flip you could answer incoming calls but now you can call and text without opening your phone Is it as useful Not hugely but it s at least possible now Hopefully software updates will add some of these features to older Z Flip devices The experience of using the outer display as a camera viewfinder has also been improved You re no longer constrained to shooting your selfies in a square ish format and you can tap through to the same selfie view you d get from shooting it on a typical smartphone just with probably better cameras There s also a decent portrait mode and you can record video directly from the outer display too The screens will auto rotate as you manipulate camera angles which means you can kinda hold it like a s camcorder It s cute Flex mode has been improved further too This includes interface upgrades for video streaming and calling beyond Google s own Android apps like Meet It should work with Instagram both Reels and Stories Facebook Zoom WhatsApp and YouTube among others There s also a new floating touchpad to control apps not yet supported on the Z Flip when you re running them on half of the display It adds a pointer to navigate the app as well as the ability to tap through and you can interact and scroll through content too While the Z Flip isn t the multitasking foldable that s the Z Fold s purview you can split the screen in half in Flex Mode launching secondary apps with a two finger swipe from the bottom Of course there s still the usual dividing line icon between the two apps if you re looking to swap around app placement or maximize one of them Engadget Mat SmithWith an even faster chip the Snapdragon Gen the Z Flip handled everything I was able to throw at it during my short time with it Another notable upgrade is battery capacity up from mAh on the Z Flip to mAh Given that battery life was one of our biggest complaints with last year s Z Flip hopefully we can expect a foldable that runs a little longer Samsung s Super Fast Charging is now supported on Z Flip which should charge the foldable up to percent in around minutes Most of the other significant specs are unchanged The main screen is a inch FHD x AMOLED screen capable of up to Hz refresh rates with three storage options GB GB GB all of which come with GB of RAM The screen is bright and vivid but if you re hoping for a life without creases it s not here just yet even on these early demo devices Samsung says it has enhanced the durability of its foldables with improved super thin glass across the main display and an enhanced panel strip that supports the display during your pokes prods and swipes Yet again the Z Flip is IPX waterproof as well If you re a Z Flip owner you might notice the thinner hinge Engadget Mat SmithWhen it comes to cameras it gets a little more complicated On paper the Z Flip appears to have the same array as its predecessors read two megapixel sensors However these are improved cameras The megapixel ultrawide camera has an f lens while the MP wide camera has an f lens and bigger micron pixels Samsung says these bigger pixels translate to better low light performance and sharper shots and the company claims it will capture percent more light The new Z Flip has also improved stabilization and subject tracking for stills and video During my brief testing the cameras seemed more responsive and capable than when I used the Z Flip s camera That said the Z Flip series was never at the cutting edge of smartphone photography which is likely to continue The Galaxy Z Flip will start at with GB of storage It ll launch in four color options Blue Pink Gold Black and Bora Purple Bora means purple so that s Purple Purple If those aren t quite to your tastes the Z Flip will also arrive alongside a Bespoke customization service offering different color permutations That includes five different body colors and three different frame colors You ll be able to preorder the device starting today with a launch set for August th 海外TECH	Engadget	Samsung's Galaxy Buds 2 Pro offer improved audio and ANC for $230	https://www.engadget.com/samsung-galaxy-buds-2-pro-announced-price-specs-130037563.html?src=rss	Samsung x s Galaxy Buds Pro offer improved audio and ANC for Samsung typically reveals a new set of true wireless earbuds alongside its latest phones and today is no different In addition to the Galaxy Fold Galaxy Flip and new watches the company is debuting the Galaxy Buds Pro the follow up to the Galaxy Buds Pro that debuted early last year While not a complete redesign this new model offers enough of an overhaul with smaller buds improved active noise cancellation ANC retooled audio and a host of other handy features All of the upgrades will cost you though the Buds Pro are more than their predecessor nbsp In terms of design the Galaxy Buds Pro are percent smaller than the Galaxy Buds Pro Samsung says the quot new compact ergonomic design quot is built to offer a secure fit that won t move around in your ear even during workouts The design should also relieve pressure thanks to a vent and nozzle grille that facilitate air flow So while the buds may look similar to the previous model they are indeed different The case on the other hand appears to be mostly unchanged Like the previous model the Buds Pro are IPX rated for water and sweat resistance although Samsung made it clear the same protection doesn t apply to the case Should you lose an earbud the Buds Pro can be located with SmartThings Find either in the case or out Inside the Buds Pro two way speakers woofers and tweeters handle the sound In addition to Audio Dolby Atmos that debuted on the Buds Pro this model also offers bit HiFi audio via Samsung s Seamless Codec the buds also support AAC and SBC The company says this produces times quot richer sound quot than bit audio When it comes to canceling noise Samsung explains that three high new mics are capable of blocking subtle and high pitched sounds with three more decibels of overall reduction nbsp There s ambient sound and a new Voice Detect feature on board as well With Voice Detect the Buds Pro can determine when you re speaking The tool temporarily changes to ambient sound mode and lowers the volume so you can have a quick convo without removing the earbuds Sony has offered something similar with its buds and headphones for a while now but its Speak to Chat tool fully pauses the audio when you talk And yes Bixby handles voice control on the Buds Pro a feature that works across Samsung s phones tablets and even its newer TVs The company also says LE Audio will debut on the earbuds later this year a tool that allows you to capture environmental sounds if you re streaming or recording nbsp Unfortunately battery life is unchanged from the Galaxy Buds Pro You can expect up to five hours of use with ANC on hours including the case or eight hours with it off hours with the case If you were hoping Samsung would reinstate iOS compatibility with this model you re going to be disappointed The Galaxy Buds Pro will work with those devices but with Bluetooth only ーthere s no companion app to unlock the full suite of features Those are reserved for Android Galaxy Wearable app PC Galaxy Buds app and Samsung s TVs Speaking of TVs the company has added those to its compatible devices for audio switching Basically you can quickly change between Galaxy phones tablets and TVs via the Auto Switch feature without having to enter pairing mode nbsp When it comes to first impressions Engadget Deputy Editor Cherlynn Low quot loved the fit quot and noted that the ANC worked well too UK Bureau Chief Mat Smith explained that the smaller size is indeed more comfortable and the Buds Pro feel quot less obtrusive quot He also said Voice Detect worked well but it could be duped by coughs and humming since it relies on a voice pickup unit to detect vibrations For what it s worth this is also a downside to Sony s automatic pausing speech detection nbsp The Galaxy Buds Pro are available for pre order starting today in graphite white and Bora Purple for General availability begins th Both the Galaxy Buds Live and Galaxy Buds will remain in Samsung s true wireless lineup if you prefer open wear or more affordable options respectively nbsp Follow all of the news from Samsung s Unpacked event right here	2022-08-10 13:00:37
