All You Need to Know FIDO2 & Passwordless Authentication |
https://dev.to/rishitashaw/all-you-need-to-know-fido2-passwordless-authentication-329a
|
All You Need to Know FIDO amp Passwordless AuthenticationIn this Blog I m gonna tell you all about Passwords current authentication models and what is wrong with them along with RSA encryption trusted computing and finally FIDO Authentication models and PasswordsFun fact The concept of Password was invented by Fernando Corbatóin at MIT It was first used on an IBM Mainframe to keep individual files private to a user It paved the way for Personal Identification Numbers PIN based authentication in the s I hope you agree with me that Passwords are very Vulnerable to Brute force Password Guessing and Phishing attacks According to SplashData the top two passwords used from to were “password and “ Current authentication models use one single factor or multiple multi factor authentication of the following Something the user knows PIN Passwords Something the user has ATM card Phones security keys Something the user is Biometrics Something the user produces Speech recognition Signature ️It is to be noted that most of them have one or the other vulnerability This diagram shows how authentications are done It is pretty self explanatory Drawbacks of authentication models Something the user knows Can be extracted by social engineering like phishing Something the user has OTPs fall into something the user knows before it is typed ATM cards can be skimmed Something the user is Biometrics can be cloned For example fingerprints can be regenerated by even high resolution pictures Deepfakes can be used to trick facial recognition Something the user produces Vulnerable to replay attacks Things are never secure so focus on adequate security Focus on the scalable attacks first Passwordless Authentication Here comes the hero of the story Passwordless Authentication It generally comes down to the authentication model of Something the user has and or Something the user is A few examples are push notification login and security keys In push notification login no matter what device you are logging in from you will get a notification on your smartphone which you have to approve In security keys you need to carry a device like a smart card which you need to connect to the machine you are logging in from for logging in Now if you are like me you must be thinking how does it work For that we need to understand a few concepts like RSA and Trusted Computing Basic concepts of RSAPublic Key Cryptosystem PKC There are two keys known as a key pair Public key and Private key If one key is used to encrypt a piece of data the other can be used to decrypt it ️Losing the private key compromises the key pair The public key can be shared easily Works on the principle that computers cannot efficiently prime factorize a number Unless using Shor s algorithm but we are not going into quantum computing now so keeping that aside RSA Cryptosystem has been proven to be a strong cryptosystem Now it is up to us keep the keys secure and use them well There are steps basically Key pair generation Choose two very large prime numbers p and q Each over bits and a multiple of bits in size n p q∅ n p q It is to be noted that n cannot be prime factorized easily so n cannot be deduced from ∅ n Select a number e where lt e lt ∅ n e co prime to ∅ n Calculate d such that d e mod ∅ n Announce public key kpub n e ️Keep private key secret kpr n d Encryption for authentication If we have a plaintext number Pand Kpr n d C P d mod NHere C is the cipher text For the exponentiation we use Fast Exponentiation algorithm Decryption for authentication If we have a ciphertext number Cand Kpub n e ️P C e mod NHere P is the plain text For the exponentiation we use Fast Exponentiation algorithm To understand RSA better check out the resources section of the blog Trusted ComputingTrusted Platforms are devices embedded on the motherboard or in the CPU It is used for cryptographic applications When used for RSA the private keys never leave the hardware making it secure Some popular ones are Samsung Knox Apple Secure Enclave Google Titan Windows Hello etc Physical Security Key on the other hand is like a Trusted Computing Platform but lightweight and portable It needs to be connected to the device while logging in Some smartwatches can also be used as security keys Can be usually connected via USB BLE or NFC ️FIDOFIDO is the best option for passage identification To understand it better lets go through some of its components Client browser The web browser we are usingAuthenticator attachment Physical security key or internal trusted computing module It is of two types Platform Internal authenticator Cross platform External security keyRelying Party RP Server The website we are logging in to RP ID The URL of the RP Server Challenge A small text which can be encrypted and decrypted to check whether the keypair is valid Specifications used in FIDO WC WebAuthn It is the set of protocols that define how the server interact with the web browser Client To Authenticator Protocol CTAP It is the set of protocols that define how the web browser interact with the authenticator attachment Before a key can used for passwordless authentication it needs to be registered on the fido server Authentication with FIDO follows a similar procedure️What makes FIDO strong Use of public key cryptosystem Use of trusted computing where the private keys never leave the user s device security key RP ID is verified at every step to stop Man In The Middle MITM attacks Cannot be phished as the client is verified by RP User does not have to know any information to be able to log in Follows zero trust model Resources to work on FIDO HOPEFULLY YOU CAN WORK USING FIDO NOW |

Code brushes for GitHub Copilot |

|
Code brushes for GitHub CopilotGitHub Copilot is incredible and if you check what s happening in the preview released as the Copilot Labs extension it will only get more amazing Check this out Let s start with a basic JavaScript that checks a string length and reports when it is empty One with an obvious mistake as we use a single instead of the type safe This will always report the string as empty if str length console error String is empty Using the Fix bugs brush this is rectified if str length console error String is empty Using the Clean brush also adds reporting when the string is not empty if str length console error String is empty else console log String is not empty Using the List steps brush adds comments for step sure this is redundant but it also works for much more complex code check the length of the stringif str length if length is print String is empty console error String is empty else if length is not print String is not empty console log String is not empty Using Make robust adds error reporting instead of logging and an extra check to make sure that str is really a String and not an empty Array function test str if str length throw new Error String is empty else if typeof str string throw new Error It is not a string else console log String is not empty The Add types brush does exactly that param string str returns string function test str if str length throw new Error String is empty else if typeof str string throw new Error It is not a string else console log String is not empty You can also define custom brushes and there are more to come |

Scientists achieve fusion ignition, a major milestone in clean energy production |
https://www.engadget.com/first-fusion-reaction-ignition-155212785.html?src=rss
|
Scientists achieve fusion ignition a major milestone in clean energy productionScientists have just crossed one of the most important thresholds in the quest for fusion energy A team at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has created the first known fusion reaction with a net energy gain ーthat is it produced more energy than it consumed and ignited The researchers achieved the feat on December th when they used lasers at the National Ignition Facility to blast a cylinder containing frozen hydrogen surrounded by diamond The reaction which generated a flurry of X rays struck a fuel pellet of deuterium and tritium with megajoules of energy That in turn led to a wave of neutron particles and megajoules of output That gain was only equivalent to about lbs of TNT but that was enough to meet the criteria for fusion ignition The development has been a long time coming The National Ignition Facility started work in but it wasn t until that the installation s laser based fusion technology produced a meaningful volume of energy Progress accelerated in the past year however Lawrence Livermore generated a much larger amount of energy last August equivalent to percent of that from the lasers An attempt in September generated megajoules using the megajoule blast The lab and the Energy Department are quick to caution that many advancements are still necessary before fusion reactors are practical enough to power homes During a presentation scientists said they needed to improve the number of reactions per minute simplify the process and otherwise make it easily repeatable And of course they need to improve scaling ーa reactor would have to power enough households to justify its existence The Energy Department is in the midst of rebooting a coordinated fusion power effort however During the event officials also noted that a functional plant wasn t as far off as you might think While they didn t commit to a timeframe they said it was less than the or years they might have predicted in the past You might see the first commercial fusion reactor in your lifetime to put it another way The technology could be vital to limiting global warming and otherwise fighting climate change While renewable energy sources like solar and wind power are more eco friendly than coal they don t always meet demand and can require large amounts of land Solar also isn t as effective in regions where sunlight can be limited Sufficiently powerful fusion reactors could achieve the dream of clean powerplants that have enough capacity to serve large populations without the radioactive waste of nuclear facilities |

The best 2-in-1 laptops for 2022 |
https://www.engadget.com/best-2-in-1-laptops-173038508.html?src=rss
|
The best in laptops for The perfect hybrid machine that s just as good a tablet as it is a laptop still doesn t exist But throughout companies like Microsoft Apple and Google continued to improve their operating systems for machines that do double duty Windows has features that make it friendlier for multi screen devices while Android has been better optimized for larger displays Plus with the rise of ARM based chips for laptops especially Apple s impressive M series prospects for a powerful in with a vast touch friendly app ecosystem is at an all time high These machines still have their limits of course Since they re smaller than proper laptops they tend to have less powerful processors Keyboards are often less sturdy with condensed layouts and shallower travel Plus they re almost always tablets first leaving you to buy a keyboard case separately And those ain t cheap So you can t always assume the advertised price is what you ll actually spend on the in you want Sometimes getting a third party keyboard might be just as good and they re often cheaper than first party offerings If you re looking to save some money Logitech s Slim Folio is an affordable option and if you don t need your keyboard to attach to your tablet Logitech s K Multi Device wireless keyboard is also a good pick While we ve typically made sure to include a budget in in previous years this time there isn t a great choice We would usually pick a Surface Go but the latest model is still too expensive Other alternatives like cheaper Android tablets are underpowered and don t offer a great multitasking interface If you want something around that s thin lightweight and long lasting you re better off this year looking at a conventional laptop like those on our best budget PCs list Chris Velazco Engadget When you re shopping for a in there are some basic criteria to keep in mind First look at the spec sheet to see how heavy the tablet is alone and with the keyboard Most modern hybrids weigh less than pounds with the pound Surface Pro being one of the heaviest around The iPad Pro and Samsung s Galaxy Tab S are both slightly lighter If the overall weight of the tablet and its keyboard come close to pounds you ll be better off just getting an ultraportable laptop You ll also want to opt for an inch or inch screen instead of a smaller inch model The bigger displays will make multitasking easier plus their companion keyboards will be much better spaced Also try to get GB of RAM if you can for better performance ーyou ll find this in the base model of the Galaxy Tab S while this year s iPad Pro and the Surface Pro start with GB of RAM Finally while some in s offer built in LTE or G connectivity not everyone will want to pay the premium for it An integrated cellular radio makes checking emails or replying to messages on the go far more convenient But it also often costs more and that s not counting what you ll pay for data And as for G ーyou can hold off on it unless you live within range of a mmWave beacon Coverage is still spotty and existing nationwide networks use the slower sub technology that s barely faster than LTE Best overall Surface Pro Intel There s no beating the Surface series when it comes to in s They re powerful sleek tablets running an OS that s actually designed for productivity The Surface Pro is Microsoft s latest and great tablet and it builds upon the already excellent Pro It features speedy th gen Intel CPUs and all of the major upgrades from last year including a Hz display and a more modern design It s the best implementation of Microsoft s tablet PC vision yet Don t confuse this with the similarly named Surface Pro with G though which has a slower ARM processor and inferior software compatibility Built in cellular is nice and all but the Intel Pro is a far better PC Like most of the other in s on this list the Pro doesn t come with a keyboard cover ーyou ll have to pay extra for that That s a shame considering it starts at Microsoft offers a variety of Type Covers for its Surface Pros ranging from to depending on whether you want a slot for a stylus But at least they re comfortable and well spaced You can also get the Surface Slim Pen for sketching out your diagrams or artwork which features haptic feedback for a more responsive experience Best for Apple users inch iPad ProIf you re already in the Apple ecosystem the best option for you is obviously an iPad The inch Pro is our pick Like older models this iPad Pro has a stunning inch screen with a speedy Hz refresh rate as well as mini LED backlighting This year it includes Apple s incredibly fast M chip and more battery life than ever before Apple s Magic Keyboard provides a satisfying typing experience and its trackpad means you won t have to reach for the screen to launch apps But it ll also cost you an extra making it the most expensive case on this list by a lot The iPad also lacks a headphone jack and its webcam is awkwardly positioned along the left bezel when you prop it up horizontally so be aware that it s still far from a perfect laptop replacement Still with its sleek design and respectable battery life the iPad Pro is a good in for Apple users Best for Android users Samsung Galaxy Tab S While Windows is better than iPadOS and Android for productivity it lags the other two when it comes to apps specifically designed for touchscreens If you want a tablet that has all the apps you want and only need it to occasionally double as a laptop the Galaxy Tab S is a solid option You ll enjoy watching movies and playing games on its gorgeous inch Hz AMOLED screen and Samsung includes the S Pen which is great for sketching and taking notes The Snapdragon Gen chip and GB of RAM keep things running smoothly too Last year Samsung dramatically improved its keyboard case making the Tab an even better laptop replacement You could type for hours on this thing and not hate yourself or Samsung The battery life is also excellent so you won t need to worry about staying close to an outlet The main caveat is that Android isn t great as a desktop OS even with the benefits of Android L And while Samsung s DeX mode offers a somewhat workable solution it has plenty of quirks Cherlynn Low contributed to this report |
