海外TECH DEV Community Debugging Program Control Flow https://dev.to/codenameone/debugging-program-control-flow-3406 Debugging Program Control FlowAs of now I published the first videos of the course and will publish the fourth tomorrow I plan to publish two videos per week on YouTube to maximize the impact but here I ll only blog one lesson per week to avoid oversaturation I shot about hours of video content and still haven t finished the nd module out of eight This course will be very detailed and intensive I m working on the course platform right now making good progress and hope to publish it soon enough here It might already be live by the time you read this It s important to me that the user experience for the course platform is satisfying So I avoided DRM as much as possible Hopefully people will respect that and the effort I m putting into this I m building the course platform on Spring Boot with GraalVM so it will ideally be lean fast and pretty simple I plan to host the videos on YouTube as unlisted videos to give a decent viewing experience This means developers could betray my trust and share unlisted videos I hope they don t My reasoning here is low overhead and excellent performance I would also like to make the course free in a few years By using YouTube I can make the course free by making the videos public The following video discusses control flow in debugging This starts with the basics but can get pretty deep for jump to line force return etc These are tools that can significantly change the way we debug code Don t forget to check out my book and subscribe to the YouTube channel for future videos TranscriptWelcome back to the second part of debugging at Scale where you can learn the secret tricks of debugging In this section we ll discuss the most basic aspect of debugging We hit a breakpoint Now what Well this is where debuggers let us control the flow to investigate how everything works in a controlled environment So what s on the agenda for today We ll discuss stepping over and into code I hope most of this list is familiar to you The last two items where we disrupt the control flow might not be familiar to you I m pretty sure most of you aren t familiar with the last item on the agenda How do I know Stay tuned and find out Step Over Into Out and ForceStep over is the most basic form of control flow We let the code in the line execute and then we can inspect the results in the variable pane It s simple and easy  In this case I just pressed the button here a couple of times but I could also just press F to get the same effect…Next we ll discuss two distinct operations step into and the related step out Step into goes into the method we invoke Notice that if there s no method to go into the step into will act like step over  We have two step into operations The regular one and the force step into which normally acts the same way We need the force version when we want to step into an API that IntelliJ will normally skip We can press F to step into a method We can press Shift F to force step into When we finished looking at a method and don t care about the rest we can step out This executes the rest of the method and returns Notice that if we have a breakpoint before the return it would still stop at the breakpoint as we see in this case We can press this button here to step out or we can press shift F to do the same thing Continue and Run to CursorContinue proceeds with the execution of the project until the breakpoint is hit again This is also called resume It s a simple feature that we use a lot You can continue by pressing the special version of the play button here The shortcut is also helpful since we use it a lot it s F Run to cursor lets us skip lines that are uninteresting and reach the code that matters We can set a breakpoint at that line to get the same effect but this is sometimes more convenient as it removes the need to set and unset a breakpoint We can press this button to run to the cursor or we can use ALT F as the shortcut for this feature Force Return and Throw ExceptionThis feature is known as force return in IntelliJ IDEA To see the force return option we right click on the stack trace and can see a set of options An even more interesting option is drop frame which I ll show soon Notice the throw exception option which is identical to force return but it throws an exception from the method Once I click this option I m shown a dialog to enter the return value from the method This lets me change the value returned from the method which is very useful when I want to debug a hard to reproduce bug Imagine a case where a failure happens to a customer but you can t reproduce it In this case I can simulate what the customer might be experiencing by returning a different value from the method Here the value is a boolean variable so it s simple But your code might return an object using this technique you can replace that object with an arbitrary value A good example would be null what if this method returned null would it reproduce the problem my user is experiencing Similarly throw exception lets us reproduce edge cases such as throwing an exception due to an arbitrary failure  Once we press OK we return with the different value In this case I was at the edge of the method but I could have done it in the start of the method and skipped the execution of the method entirely This lets us simulate cases where a method might fail but we want to mock its behavior That can make sense if we can t reproduce behavior seen by the customer We can simulate by using tools like this Drop FrameDrop frame is almost as revolutionary but it s also more of a “neat trick Here I stepped into a method by mistake Oops I didn t want to do that I wanted to change something before stepping in…Luckily there s drop frame We saw I can reach it in the right click menu you can also click here to trigger it Drop frame effectively drops the stack frame It s an undo operation But it isn t exactly that It can t undo the state changes that occurred within the method we stepped into So if you stepped into the method and variables that aren t on the stack were changed they would remain changed Variables on the stack are those variables that the method declares or accepts as arguments those will be reset However if one of those variables points at an object then that object resides in heap and changes there can t be reset by unwinding the stack This is still a very useful feature similar to force return with the exception that it will return to the current line not the next line So it won t return a value This gets even better than that Jump to LineJump to line is a secret feature in IntelliJ It works but developers don t know about it You need to install the Jump to Line plugin to use it Since it has a relatively low install count I assume people just don t know it exists Because this is a must have plugin It will change the way you debug With jump to line we can move the current instruction pointer to a different position in the method We can drag the arrow on the left to bring execution to a new location Notice that this works in both directions I can move the current execution back and forth  This doesn t execute the code in between it literally moves the current instruction to a new position It s so cool I have to show it again…If you see a bug just drag the execution back and reproduce it You can change variable values and reproduce the issue over and over until you fully understand it  We can skip over code that s failing etc This is spectacular I don t need to recompile code If you ever had a case where you accidentally stepped over a line and oops That s not what I wanted Then stopped the debugger and started from scratch This is the plugin for you This happened to everyone We can just drag the execution back and have a do over It s absolutely fantastic FinallyIn the next video we will discuss the watch briefly We will dig much deeper into it in the sixth video in the series So stay tuned  If you have any questions please use the comments section Thank you 2022-12-13 17:26:06
海外TECH DEV Community After I do digital detox for a month https://dev.to/bitethecode/after-i-do-digital-detox-for-a-month-1k1b After I do digital detox for a month ContentIntroWhy We can t stay away from it What are the problems then How do we overcome A month of digital detoxConclusion IntroHave you watched a movie called Jexi It s a light comedy about life and relationship The character Phil is shy boy and is raised with a phone like many of us His default Plan B was his phone Whenever he feels bored sad or lonely he seemed to be more comfortable with his phone rather than being around people He has no friends and needless to say no girlfriend His only friend was his phone and AI Jexi However he s changed during the movie after he met Cate She used to be a good girl defined by world She graduated early went to a good college and worked for Amazon And she did social media heavily sharing all of her shiny life Happy story so far yet she suddenly felt empty inside and living not her own life She quit her job and social media She started finding her own joy without worrying about being judged After starting a date with her Phil made real connections and also learned how to be happy without his phone and social media He also found a love with Cate This is the basic summary of the movie My wife and I laughed a lot while watching the movie yet it shows our sad reality Phil is not simply a character in the movie If you look around while waiting at cafe subway or anywhere everyone is holding their phone and seems busy scanning through news social media or texts We don t talk anymore Even when we spend time with our beloved ones we frequently see our phones We already know the answer not being attached to it The problem is we can t stop Why we cannot stay away from it For sure the advance of tech brings perks to us However we seemed more attached than simply utilizing a device Why I found following reasons from observing how I stay with it over time Having a digital device of any form is the default mode at least to our generation I never imagine life without iPhone Actually I thought it d be awkward if I don t have one Smart phone is affordable and powerful than ever This little one can cover from texts emails SNS banks shopping to name only a few That is probably why we call this Smart Once we are used to convenience it brings it s not easy to drop itThanks to advance of tech we can do Facetime with our friends at anytime We may feel isolated if we don t use the phone in this connected worldMost of hobbies we like to have cost money and time Think about Golf We need to have multiple clubs and clothes Then you have to find time to practice and play with friends On the other hand a phone is bringing you a little joy instantly Open up Youtube and watch You don t have to spend money And it s fun right What are the problems then If we can t walk away from devices and they are bringing value to our life why we bother keeping it From my own experience the side effects were more harmful than I imagined A few of them were Whenever I felt challenged at work I went back to the phone and surf the internet to release stress When I felt lonely I went back to the phone and start watching Twitter or Instagram to feel connectedEven when I was with beloved ones I frequently saw the phone I felt always behind as all I see in SNS is the most beautiful moment of other people s life Sounds familiar A majority of people do like this Luckily I had a chance to interact with people who are not dependent on devices in recent days These people look not only happy but attractive as a person too Why Here are a few reasons that explain They really focus on in person interactions They have nothing to do with their phone They deal with difficult emotions wisely without numbing them via doom scrolling They don t feel rushed and respect their own paceI thought these were enough to give it a try How do we overcome I ve followed an author Cal Newport for years One of his books called Deep Work was tremendously useful for me to redefine the work style One day when I was listening to his Podcast he mentioned that he never had SNS accounts in his life Yet he is successful at his life and happy This led me to read his another book Digital Minimalism I had a couple of questions before I started reading the book How did he manage everything without heavily depending on digital devicesHow would I use After I read the book I had mixed feelings I felt sorry for self as I wasted hours upon hours on meaningless stuff with this phone Yet I was happy as well as I can now apply a few tactics that I learned from this book to be happier Here are lessonsTrying to spend one hour each day without deviceStop using devices during downtime to distress instead try to do demanding activity like exerciseIn person interaction is far better than SNS activity I took one step further with these ideas I decided to do digital detox for a month A month of digital detoxI wanted to experiment a few things with this period of digital detox First I wanted to see having less screen time especially on SNS is really beneficial to me in emotional perspectives Second I wanted to see I can still manage to keep relationships and professional networks Third I wanted to see there are trickled benefits that I didn t expect With this in mind I separated the whole process into multiple steps List all the activities I do with digital devices After I monitor a couple of weeks I was able to find which activities I do with the phone I read books articlesI watch Youtube videosI do sns Twitter LinkedIn InstagramI do random searches on the internet Consider the pros consThe next step was to consider what pros cons for each activity I do with my phone but seriously If pros and cons on a par then I decided to remove them I removed Kindle Youtube SNS and only keep the Safari for internet search Find the alternativesMy phone was not fun anymore It s still functional but I didn t have things hijacking the attention I find it way less distracting throughout the day I realized how much time I have for focused one once distractions were out I still feel quite bored and inclined to go back to the phone Yet I learned being bored and relaxed is critical for me to restore energy from hectic pace of life Find the joy in other activitiesFollowing Cal Newport s advice I decided to engage in more demanding or in person activities I bought more paper books that require focus I put in a separate room while I m reading After a few weeks I learned that reading books is way more meaningful activity Also I started playing tennis more with friends We started talking more personal things after a game and became real friends The less time I spend with the phone the more I feel connected with the real world ConclusionI can t say I m completely free from these digital devices Yet what I learned is I don t need to stick to it all day long Actually I should keep distant from it and use it wisely Otherwise it s easy to be trapped in and waste priceless time The whole period of digital detox led me to think about what is definition of my own happiness and what activities can affect to it Even after a month I don t have Youtube Twitter and LinkedIn on the phone Still I feel very calm and tranquil inside So I highly recommend to anyone who feel exhausted from the digital devices to give it a try If you like this content follow me devto or Github 2022-12-13 17:02:24

海外TECH Engadget 'Avatar: The Way of Water' is the first great high frame rate movie https://www.engadget.com/avatar-the-way-of-water-review-hfr-high-frame-rate-170058030.html?src=rss x Avatar The Way of Water x is the first great high frame rate movieAvatar The Way of Water is a triumph As a sequel to the highest grossing film ever which was criticized for its formulaic story and the surprisingly small ripple it had on pop culture the new movie is a genuine surprise It s a sweeping epic that reflects on the nature of families our relationship to the natural world and humanity s endless thirst for violence and plunder Fans of the original film often had to make excuses for writer and director James Cameron s stilted script but that s no longer the case for The Way of Water thanks to additional help from Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa who both worked on the recent criminally under loved Planet of the Apes trilogy Perhaps most impressive though is that James Cameron has managed to craft the best high frame rate HFR movie yet Certain scenes play back at frames per second giving them a smoother and more realistic sheen compared to the standard fps That leads to D action scenes that feel incredibly immersive ーat times HFR can make you forget that the lush alien wildlife on Pandora isn t real Fox DisneyUnlike the handful of high frame rate movies we ve already seen The Hobbit trilogy as well as Ang Lee s Gemini Man and Billy Lynn s Long Half Time Walk the Avatar sequel deploys the technology in a unique way Rather than using HFR throughout the entire movie Cameron relies on it for major action sequences while slower dialog scenes appear as if they re running at fps To do that the entire film actually runs at fps while the calmer scenes use doubled frames to trick your brain into seeing them at the typical theatrical frame rate If this sounds a bit confusing your brain may have a similar reaction while watching the film The Way of Water often jumps from hyper real HFR to pseudo fps in the same scene ーat one point I counted around a dozen switches in a few minutes This is a strategy Cameron has been discussing for years In he noted that HFR is quot a tool not a format quot and later he rejected Ang Lee s attempt at using HFR for Gemini Man s entire runtime Cameron s dual pronged approach to HFR is bound to be controversial Even for someone who appreciates what the technology has to offer ーpristine D action scenes with no blurring or strobing ーit took me a while to get used to flipping between high frame rate and fps footage With Gemini Man my brain got used to the hyper reality of HFR within minutes In The Way of Water I was almost keeping an eye out for when the footage changed Fox DisneyDespite the distracting format changes The Way of Water s high frame rate footage ultimately worked for me At times the film appears to be a window into the world of Pandora with breathtaking shots of lush forests and lush oceans It makes all of Cameron s creations from enormous flying fish like creatures that you can ride to alien whales with advanced language appear as if they re living and breathing creatures HFR also works in tandem with the sequel s more modern CG animation making the Na vi and their culture feel all the more real nbsp Over the film s three hour and twelve minute runtime I eventually managed to see what the director was aiming for even if his ambition exceeded his grasp nbsp Cameron who has the world s first Avatar and third highest grossing films Titanic under his belt and who dove into the Marianas Trench in a self designed personal submarine suggests you can use the bathroom anytime you want during The Way of Water You ll just catch up the next time you see it in theaters Baller The re release of Avatar earlier this month also used a combination of HFR and traditional footage in addition to brightening the picture and upscaling the film to K But even though that revamp grossed over million on its own there hasn t been much discussion about how it integrated high frame rate footage I saw it on a Regal RPX screen which offered D but no extra frames sadly There s a better chance you ll be able to catch Avatar The Way of Water exactly how Cameron intended It ll be screening in K HFR and D at all AMC Dolby Cinema locations and select IMAX theaters single laser screens get everything some dual laser screens will only offer K D with HFR While you could see it in D why would you After suffering through the interminable Hobbit movies in HFR I figured the technology was mostly a waste of time yet another money grab that Hollywood can use to pump up ticket prices Director Peter Jackson struggled to recreate the magic of his Lord of the Rings trilogy and amid production issues he also failed to change the way he shot the Hobbit films to account for HFR So that led to sets that looked like they were ripped from B grade fantasy movies and costumes that seemingly came from nbsp a nbsp Spirit Halloween pop up Ang Lee s more studious attempts at using the technology especially with the action scenes in Gemini Man convinced me HFR still had some potential But even he struggled along the way Billy Lynn s Long Half Time Walk is a cinematic curiosity where HFR makes slow dialog scenes appear too distractingly real Gemini Man was cursed by a messy script and the need to be a big budget Will Smith blockbuster Fox DisneyAvatar The Way of Water benefits from the creative failures of all of the earlier high frame rate films For many it ll be their introduction to this technology so it ll be interesting to see how general audiences respond Video games and hyper real YouTube action footage have made fps footage far more common so I could see younger audiences those raised on hundreds of hours of Minecraft and Fortnite vibing with Cameron s vision Everyone else will need more convincing For me though I m just glad there s finally a high frame rate film that s genuinely great instead of just a technical exercise 2022-12-13 17:00:58
