Mentor tools I: Safe Space |
https://dev.to/one-beyond/mentor-tools-i-safe-space-54n6
|
Mentor tools I Safe SpaceHave you ever talked to someone and felt it was not the right place to share your real thoughts or feelings What if this person thought you were not good enough Or that your ideas or feelings were wrong If you ve ever felt like that at any time continue reading In this kind of interaction we feel that we could somehow be judged or misunderstood And the consequence is that we could partially or totally hide what we want to express For you as a mentor this lack of information is a blocker to helping your mentees In the worst case if these feelings or ideas not communicated are shared by more people getting to know them or not can mean the success or failure of any project or goal at company level From my experience as a mentor my suggestion to avoid this situation is to foster the best environment for mentees to speak clearly And that s where the safe space concept arises A safe space is one where “people show up feeling welcome and encouraged to interact among the team even if they are different or have different opinions or ideas from other members of the workforce In my opinion that is exactly the environment you need to create for your one on ones As a result you will Build trust mentorship is like a couple no trust failure ensured Your mentees won t share with you their needs or concerns without trust so you won t be able to help them grow Promote engagement to the team company safe spaces promote a positive and inclusive work environment where employees can feel valued and respected Wouldn t you stay in a place like this Foster mental health Because of everything pointed out before safe spaces lead to better mental health Did you know that people who work at high trust companies experience less stress Raise job satisfaction boost productivity and decrease turnover rates So without being an expert but based on my current knowledge and experience I will give you some tips that have worked for me to create a safe space in my one on ones Lead by exampleMy first tip is related to this feeling I have when I start mentoring someone I then notice that my mentee is not fully transparent when talking to me Have you had this intuition too in any one on one Probably yes This is absolutely normal I ve also felt like that as a mentee When I started talking to a new mentor I didn t really know if I would be understood So to solve this blocker as soon as possible I used to tell my mentees something like “Feel free to tell me anything you think This seemed a good message to open the door to transparency But…Did it really work Maybe sometimes it did but to be honest…sometimes it didn t What I learned from this experience is that it is more useful to lead by example If you want your mentee to tell you “I m struggling with… talk about your struggles sometimes Lead the way Be a model of behavior I think that is the best way to go Not effective but really helpful Following this idea of leading by example here are two things I do in my one on ones to create a safe space Share things that make you “human and not a superhero ine We are all imperfect humans We don t always do things well and we sometimes need help How can you encourage your mentee to share their own struggles with you Let s see a couple of examples You perceive yourself as a good professional You have knowledge and experience in your field But you still struggle when giving feedback What can you do about that Apart from working on it if you are a mentor you can share your blocker with your mentee “Well don t feel bad about…You need to improve on that but I have some difficulties in…We all have our strong and weak points This behavior will teach your mentee that sharing your weaknesses or blockers is OK Yesterday you got stuck with a pipeline What a nightmare You finally asked a teammate for help What can this simple anecdote be useful for in a one on one with your mentee Let s see “Bufffff I was stuck with…and I ve asked sb for help Thank God we ve got to solve it together Yes you can share these kinds of episodes with your mentee This behavior will teach that no one knows everything and will promote the idea that asking for help is OK These are only two examples You can apply the same principle of “Lead by example if you want your mentee to give you feedback about yourself the project the company… or openly ask questions Start by doing so Share your ideas and feelingsI think that not everything can be shared and also you may not want to share personal information which is absolutely reasonable But I ve proved that by sharing things about yourself it is more likely that your mentee also shares Here is one example Today you are feeling sad and tired You haven t slept well and you ve got a personal concern You have your one on one session and you know you won t give your Then you can start by saying “Sorry I m not feeling well today I m feeling a bit tired and sad optional because… I ll do my best anyway Those simple sentences will open the door for your mentee to share next time And you won t get as much as you would the feeling that “something is happening to my mentee but I don t know what You are teaching that sharing your feelings is OK This is one example of how sharing feelings can open the door to more transparent communication Anyway you can apply this tip also to personal opinions or ideas share your point of view first Probably your mentee will feel more open to giving an opinion after that Active listeningApart from the “Lead by example tip “Active listening is another important concept to point out when talking about creating safe spaces This skill helps build trust and understand other people s thoughts and feelings I ll cover this topic in the next article so keep tuned Don t judgeThis is another important tip If your mentee shares any ideas or feelings with you and then feels judged all your previous efforts will have little or no result More on this also in my next article But for now keep your mind open in your one on ones At this point I must say that not everything is in your hands when talking about creating a safe environment It is also important that the culture of the company you are working in also fosters a healthy environment where people feel safe enough to express themselves So although this is not within the scope of this article I ll summarize some measures a company can also put into practice to foster this healthy environment Establish clear policies and procedures against discrimination and harassment Foster diversity and inclusion in the company culture Encourage open communication Address incidents promptly Finally you ll need your mentee to be open to sharing That s also something that is not in your hand but if you ve put into practice these tips and the ones on my previous article “Mentor First Aid Kit you ll have done a great job Feel proud And that s all I hope these tips help you get your mentorships to the next level See you in the next one |

10 Best Practices for Ecommerce Checkout Design |
https://dev.to/medusajs/10-best-practices-for-ecommerce-checkout-design-81e
|
Best Practices for Ecommerce Checkout DesignOptimizing your ecommerce checkout process is crucial to reduce cart abandonment rates as it affects customer satisfaction and the likelihood of returns If the checkout process is not smooth and simple the customers may abandon their carts without making a purchase and may not return to your ecommerce This article shares the best practices for optimizing your checkout process and boosting your sales What is Medusa Medusa is a set of open source commerce modules that gives developers and businesses the flexibility to build sophisticated and unique digital experiences One of Medusa s building blocks include a Next js storefront that implements all the checkout best practices mentioned in this article Ecommerce Checkout Best Practices Don t Force Customers to Create an AccountForcing customers to register means you are creating an obstacle for customers who want to buy ultimately increasing abandoning carts Therefore offering a guest checkout option helps you to increase the chances of a sale Allow guests to checkout and complete their purchases with an email address to make the checkout experience more effortless In addition you can allow customers to log in using their social media accounts including Facebook or Google to simplify the checkout process and eliminate the need for registering and entering personal information Alternatively let the customer have the option to create an account by adding a checkbox that prompts them to choose whether they want to create an account When customers select this option a password field should appear allowing customers to set a password This way the customer must only fill in an extra field for the password Don tForce customers to create accounts to fill their carts or to complete the checkout process DoAllow customers to checkout as guests Make creating an account simple by enabling social login and by one click creating an account Ask Only for Necessary Information and Enable Auto FillAvoid annoying the customer with extra steps and information as this may make their shopping experience time consuming and uncomfortable To ease the checkout process keep the forms concise by requesting only essential information about the customer Eliminate any unnecessary steps and clearly describe why certain information is required For example avoid asking for non essential details including Address birthday gender or company name Add a single field for the full name instead of separate fields for first and last name Clarify why this field required on AmazonIn addition make sure to enable Autocomplete Attribute for input elements This helps speed the process up by making billing and shipping addresses auto fill as soon as the customer starts typing Most browsers like Firefox Google Chrome and Safari support this feature Furthermore offer a checkbox to enable customers to use the billing address as the shipping address simplifying the form filling process and making it more efficient You can automatically populate the form with email shipping and billing address information if the customer is logged in However allow customers to change this information if needed to streamline the process Checkout on PalmesDon tAsk for unnecessary information including age gender company name and more Make the form too long to fill DoEnable auto fill for all checkout form input fields Let the user use the same address for shipping and billing If the customer logs in fill in the payment and address information form account information Offer Multiple Payment MethodsSupport multiple payment options when purchasing online especially for ecommerce that supports global shipping This ensures a seamless payment experience for the customer Provide a variety of payment methods that customers in different locations can use and set the most popular methods first That allows customers to pay with the preferred payment method that suits them and helps you to increase your credibility Most customers prefer to use common credit or debit cards from Visa or Mastercard but many alternatives have emerged in the last few years You should consider including payment options such as Apple Pay and Google Pay Don t Limit payment options on your ecommerce Use uncommon payment methods that confuse the customer Do Provide a variety of payment methods Consider Mobile payments and e bank transfers not only cards Payment Method on Tekla Use Descriptive Form LabelsForm Labels are an essential part of accessibility Good labeling can guide the customers to add the correct information Keep labels short and descriptive telling the customer what the input fields mean and that the form is easy to read and scan For example instead of using “Where do you live or “Where would you like to receive the package use the label “Address Customers will recognize what information they should add Don t use the placeholder as a label because the placeholder disappears when the customer starts typing Still the label or the floating placeholder remains visible after the field has been filled in That helps customers remember what exactly the purpose of the field is You can use the placeholder with the label as a description or example of the required information for the field Pincode placeholder on Amazon IndiaPlace the label above an input field so the customer is not forced to look separately at the label and the input field which results in a quick and easy completion time Make the label font clear and bold Checkout Form on TeklaDon t Use long form labels Use a placeholder as a label Do Use the placeholder as a description for the input information Place the label above of input fields Highlight Required Fields and Use Clear Validation MessagesForm validation ensures the customer s data entered into a form meets the requirements and serves as a communication point during checkout To save your customer time and prevent errors highlight the required fields and provide clear instructions on what they need to pay attention to while completing the process If a customer enters incorrect information in a field provide concise and informative validation messages to guide them on fixing the error and moving forward quickly in the checkout process Place the validation message near the field with the error to draw the customers attention and avoid the need to search for the field It s also important to notify customers of any invalid or missing input fields in real time before proceeding to the checkout process s next step This way customers can address any issues without retracing previous steps later Checkout Form on TeklaDon t Add broad messages such as “there s something wrong when there is an error or invalid data Use long validation messages Do Highlight the required fields Make validation messages specific concise and informative And use field validation in real time Make The Checkout Page Mobile FriendlyWith the growing number of people using mobile phones for online purchases it s essential to create a seamless mobile experience and optimize your checkout process for the success of your ecommerce business On smaller devices use wide checkout buttons and large fonts to minimize this risk and help customers to complete a purchase smoothly without any obstacles Also avoid placing two or more fields in a single row Instead use individual rows with labels for each field this ensures a smooth sequential transition through the checkout process Checkout Form on TeklaDon t Place more than one field in a row Keep the buttons and fields small Do Make the form fields vertical and use wide buttons on small devices Put one field in a single row a maximum of two fields for short inputs Highlight Security and PrivacyThe more secure your ecommerce is the more trust and credibility you establish with your customers They can confidently purchase through your ecommerce with their sensitive payment information billing shipping and personal information Show the payment methods with the original payment gateways logo such as Visa MasterCard and PayPal to offer customers a transparent and secure experience To further earn customer trust display security certifications or trust seals like Norton and Better Business Bureau at the checkout screen showcasing your ecommerce protection Adding Extended Validation Certificate EV can help your customers to comprehend your ecommerce verification and display a green assurance bar with your ecommerce name Having an SSL certificate with HTTPS also reassures customers and motivates them to move forward in the checkout process Don t Let the checkout process without security options Do Use original payment gateway logos including Visa MasterCard and PayPal Use certifications or trust seals like Norton and Better Business Bureau Add SSL certificate with HTTPS Show Checkout Progress BarWhen customers don t know how long the checkout process will take they might abandon their checkout process Prevent this by adding a progress indicator that allows them to track their progress and know where they are in the checkout process It guides and shows the customer what to do during the checkout process Make the progress indicators with the fewest steps to show the customers how quick checkout will be The design should be clear with each status indicated by a different color Add a descriptive label for each step instead of just displaying a number For example Step Personal Details Step Shipping Details and Step Payment Details This informs customers what they need to complete the purchase Offer customers a back option if they need to edit their address or make any other changes Also always save the progress if the customer wants to exit and return later Checkout Indicator on TeklaDon t Make the process too long Reset the information in case the customer is back Do Make the indicators in as few steps as possible Make the steps clear visually and add a descriptive label for each step Improve Website PerformanceImproving site performance is important for any ecommerce website Poor performance including crashes and slow loading times can lead customers to abandon the checkout process Therefore good performance can encourage the customer to complete the process and lead to increase conversions and sales Make sure to use a hosting service that fits your ecommerce and customer traffic Avoid shared hosting and opt for VPS or cloud hosting which allows you to scale performance according to your needs Test your ecommerce with tools like Pagespeed Insights and GTmetrix to evaluate your ecommerce and identify areas for improvement Website speed is impacted by the number of files the browser has to request to load a website causing delays in loading time To speed up your website reduce the number of HTTP requests by removing unnecessary elements features and plugins minifying code compressing assets and utilizing Lazy Loading Lazy Loading allows the browser to upload assets while customers are scrolling sending requests only for the visible portion of the page which speeds up the initial loading time Don t Don t send too many HTTP requests Do Test your website with performance testing tools to discover improvement areas Use lazy loading Add Upsell and Cross SellUpselling and cross selling strategies increase customer satisfaction and result in additional purchases making them an easy win for increasing sales Upselling involves encouraging customers to purchase higher end or premium versions of the products that the customer selects And coss selling encourages customers to purchase related or complementary products to the ones selected by the customer Offer product bundling to make the customer buy more products with fewer steps and offer a special price or discount on the total amount of product bundling making them feel like they have received a good deal However it s important to only suggest relevant products based on the customer s browsing history or car content Avoid suggesting products the customer doesn t need as you could lose credibility Don t Offer product bundling with products not relevant to each other Show products that customers are not interested in Do Offer product bundling Offer a special price or discount for product bundling ConclusionA well designed checkout process is one of the most critical aspects of success in your ecommerce This process determines whether potential customers become loyal or abandon their carts Optimizing the checkout process covers several elements but it mainly involves ensuring customers can complete the process quickly and easily with a few steps It s important to ensure that the checkout process is enjoyable for the customer without any boredom and difficulties that could discourage them from buying Developers can utilize Medusa to build a checkout experience tailored towards their users There are no limitations in how they build it or what tech stack they use You can learn more about Medusa and what it offers in its documentation |

Ford unveils an electric Explorer crossover built for Europe x s narrow streetsFord has finally shown the medium sized electric crossover it teased last year and it might not be what you expect The company has unveiled an electric Explorer that s quot designed for Europe quot and as suited to tight city streets as it is weekend jaunts It s relatively compact under ft long versus ft for the gas SUV and offers creature comforts like quot sporty quot seats Notably it also includes a few technology features you won t even find in higher end Ford EVs like the Mustang Mach E The inch vertical touchscreen will seem familiar but it slides up and down ーyou won t have to settle for an awkward position You also won t find the physical knob from earlier Ford EVs The automaker also takes advantage of the electrified design to provide a massive amount of console storage space enough for a inch laptop and a private quot locker quot for valuables Wireless phone charging is standard as is wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay The five cameras and three radar sensors provide Ford s usual range of driver aids although this is the first time Europeans will have access to features like Assisted Lane Change which changes lanes through a stalk press Most performance specs aren t yet available including range However Ford claims you can charge from percent to percent in a relatively quick minutes The company is taking reservations for base Explorer and higher end Explorer Premium trims now ahead of a release later this year While final pricing will have to wait Ford expects the line to start below € about Don t expect a launch elsewhere unfortunately Ford tells Engadget there are quot no plans quot to bring the Explorer EV to North America and that the conventional Explorer will still be on sale worldwide The Explorer is part of a larger strategy to introduce seven EVs to Europe by including the compact Puma and the Transit van Ford ultimately hopes to completely electrify its passenger cars in Europe by This new model may be key to that transition On top of being more practical for European streets it s considerably more affordable than the roughly € Mach E This is the mainstream if still pricey people hauler that might reach a wider audience This article originally appeared on Engadget at |

The best mobile microphones for 2023 |
https://www.engadget.com/best-mobile-microphones-for-recording-with-a-phone-154536629.html?src=rss
|
The best mobile microphones for If you consider yourself a mobile creator and you re not using some sort of dedicated microphone you might be holding yourself back We re not judging but your audience likely is Audio especially dialog is often overlooked but nothing screams amateur more than subpar sound There are many many options for the home or office studio but there are a surprising amount of mobile specific or at least mobile friendly solutions out there to elevate your on the go recordings be that for social a jam session making movies podcasting and beyond What “the best mic for your iPhone or Android is will vary depending on the task you need it for If you want to record a TikTok or a Podcast or even a jam session all have slightly different needs but the selection below covers most bases and maybe even a few you didn t think of yet for recording high quality sound with little more than a mobile phone The gearThis guide is all about recording on the go free from the constraints of a studio or office but also far away from luxuries like power outlets acoustically friendly rooms and a full size PC As such there are two styles of microphone that really shine here Lavalier lapel and shotgun We ll be covering a few other types too but between those most tasks are covered We ll also show you how you can use the USB mics you may already have with your phone and even ways to connect heavy duty studio classics XLR to your humble handset but all that will be through accessories For now let s start with the classic clip mics James Trew EngadgetLavalier micsThe obvious benefit of a lapel mic is size Their small profile makes them perfect for presenting to the camera with the flexibility to move around while maintaining consistent audio quality If you re a budding TikTok or YouTube creator it s definitely worth having one of these in your bag The main trade off however is that they re only good for recording the person they re attached to If you have two people talking and only one is wearing the mic you ll only get good audio for one half of the conversation so for multi person recordings you ll need a mic for each guest and a way to record them at the same time so costs can go up quickly Fortunately lapel mics have become a very competitive market with good viable options costing as little as For an absolute bargain with a long cord and some connectivity accessories the Boya BY M is hard to argue with But while these budget choices are great value if you want something that should either last longer is more versatile or just sounds better it s worth paying a little bit more Best mm mic Rode Lavalier IIRode s Lavalier II is a slick looking low profile lavalier that sounds great At it s somewhere in the sweet spot between budget and higher end clip on options It s easy to recommend the Lavalier II just on its sound alone but it comes with a rugged case and a good selection of accessories For even more flexibility you can pair this with Rode s AI Micro interface which provides easy connection to an iPhone or Android or even PCs and adds support for a second mic perfect for recording podcasts or interviews Best USB C mic Sennheiser XSAt Sennheiser s XS USB C lav mic is fairly affordable sounds great and plugs right into your phone or laptop without needing an adapter This not only makes it convenient but reduces the overall cost as you don t need a headphone adapter for your phone What s more the XS has a meter long cable which gives you plenty of scope for movement or framing A word on wireless systemsJames Trew EngadgetRecently there has been an explosion in mobile friendly wireless systems but there are two we really like The first is Rode s Wireless GO II Arguably the original defined this category but the second generation improves on it with two wireless transmitters making this podcast and interview friendly This wireless microphone is also incredibly versatile as it doubles as a standalone recorder can be mounted in a camera cold shoe and even has its own “reporter mic adapter Oh and you can make any mm mic including the lavaliers above wireless by plugging it into one of the receivers The second is the Mikme Pocket This Austrian designed pack is a high end wireless lavalier microphone system designed to be particularly mobile friendly There s a comprehensive app for both video and audio recording and internal storage so you won t ever experience dropouts It also means you can enjoy a practically infinite range At it s a higher spend but if high quality audio and near infinite range are what you need then this is the one AdaptersSo we ve already touched on this with the AI Micro which is an adapter of sorts One of the first things you might bump up against when dealing with mobile audio accessories is TRRS vs TRS connectors Simply put mm TRS is what you might know as the age old classic headphone connector while TRRS became common for its support for headsets and inline mics You can easily tell them apart as TRS connectors have two black bands on them while a TRRS has three For you the budding creator it can be a bit of an annoyance as many mm lavaliers are going to be TRS and won t work when plugged into your phone s headphone adapter Sometimes your lavalier might include what you need in the box but otherwise you ll want to pick up a TRS to TRRS adapter like this Of course some smartphone specific mics have TRRS connectors already for those you ll want a cable that goes the other way should you want to use it with other devices like a DSLR Shotgun micsJames Trew EngadgetYou may be more familiar with shotgun mics when it comes to video recording It s the style of microphone most often found atop a DSLR or mirrorless camera but they make great companions for other portable devices too your cell phone included The benefit of a shotgun is that they tend to be highly directional which makes them perfect for podcasts recording instruments foley sounds and much much more For us mobile recordists another benefit is that they tend to be light and portable perfect for slipping into a backpack or even a laptop bag Even better there are some great mobile specific options Best shotgun mic for video music Sennheiser MKE nd gen You shouldn t buy a mic just because of how it looks but the MKE from Sennheiser definitely makes its rivals look wimpy More important than aesthetics though is how it sounds and the MKE records very cleanly without obvious coloration to the audio What s more the battery powered mic won t steal power from your phone or camera and with three gain levels to choose from you can boost things when needed or avoid clipping on louder subjects The MKE also comes with both TRS and TRRS cables for compatibility with a variety of devices The MKE s physical gain controls and high pass filter unlike the other two below that are updated via an app take the stress out of worrying if your audio source moves or changes volume as you can adjust that on the fly If you re a musician looking to record loud drums and then softer vocals on the move for example these tactile gain settings are a massive plus Best budget shotgun mic Rode VideoMic GO IIWhen we tested the VideoMic GO II we were surprised at just how good it sounded right out of the box At it rivals many desktop microphones that cost three times the price You ll need a companion app to change settings otherwise this performs well across the board Best shotgun mic for portability Shure MV Not to be confused with the older MV that plugged directly into a Lightning port the MV is a mini shotgun mic made with the smartphone in mind Often sold as a vlogging kit with a tripod and phone grip the MV has modular cables for connecting directly to Androids and iPhones Desktop and USB mics go mobileJames Trew EngadgetMobile specific mics are great but there s nothing stopping you from using the mic you might already have if it s somewhat portable You ll definitely need to do a little dance with some adapters but that s half the fun Below are a couple of recommendations for “regular microphones that pair well with a phone and then the cables and adapters that you ll need to get setup Apogee HypeMicArguably there are few microphones that are could be described as quot mobile friendly quot than the HypeMic from Apogee While it looks like a regular handheld mic it s actually deceivingly small making it very light and portable It also comes with cables to directly connect it to iPhones and Android handsets ーno adapters needed Don t let the small size deceive you though the HypeMic has a big trick up its sleeve a built in analog compressor for professional sounding vocals Whether you record podcasts vocals or instruments there s a setting on the HypeMic just for you At it s a little on the spendy side but you get a very versatile device that s just as useful for the desktop too Samson QUThis dynamic mic is a favorite with podcasters with many production companies using it as their standard mic to send out to remote guests thanks to its excellent quality to value performance The QU features both USB and XLR connectivity making it versatile for both desktop and mobile applications but it s the former we re interested in here as that s what allows you to connect it to your phone with nothing more than a USB cable and an adapter see below What s more the QU is solid enough to endure a little bit of rough and tumble so will happily live in the bottom of your backpack ready for when you need it Meanwhile the handheld design is versatile enough it can turn its hand to singing instruments podcasts interviews and more TulaYou may not be familiar with the name but Tula snuck into our hearts with its versatile vintage inspired debut microphone From a mobile perspective the Tula connects to Androids directly over USB C or iPhones with the right USB C to Lightning cable more on this below or a USB “camera kit adapter What makes the Tula special is that it s also a desktop mic and portable recorder with lavalier input and GB of storage and even features noise cancellation perfect for cutting down on outside background sounds With the Tula you could theoretically have one mic for home mobile and standalone recording IK Multimedia iRig Pre If you already have a stash of XLR mics or really do need a studio condenser mic with phantom power then the iRig Pre is a portable interface that will feed any XLR mic into your phone It runs off two AA batteries which it uses to supply phantom power when needed and won t drain your phone There s also a headphone port for monitoring gain controls and LEDs to help prevent clipping A word on cablesJames Trew EngadgetConnecting USB microphones directly to phones is rarely as simple as just one cable although that s starting to become more common In general Android makes this simpler but also thanks to the wide range of manufacturers and software versions you can t always guarantee things will work smoothly The iPhone is a whole other situation USB microphones have a good chance of working via the USB camera kit we mentioned earlier but that s still inelegant sometimes Frustratingly some USB C to Lightning cables will play nice with microphones but sadly most will not including Apple s own One confirmed option is this cable from Fiio or this generic alternative These are inexpensive enough that it s worth having a couple around if you work with audio a lot they of course can also be used to charge your phone as a bonus This article originally Google is opening up access to its Bard AI chatbot todaySince unveiling its Bard conversational AI in February Google has been working to improve the chatbot s responses after it spouted misinformation in its Twitter debut More recently we ve seen the company add generative AI features to practically its entire suite of services while access to the Bard chatbot remained exclusive to a few We saw some Pixel users receive invites to test out Google s bot yesterday and today the company said it s quot starting to open access to Bard quot In a blog post that quot Bard did help us write quot vice president of product Sissie Hsiao and vice president of research Eli Collins invited folks to sign up at bard google com The company said it will begin rolling out access to those in the US and the UK today and that it s quot expanding over time to more countries and languages quot Opening up access to more people is quot the next critical step in improving it quot the pair said noting that getting feedback from a wider tester base is crucial Much like you can with ChatGPT or Microsoft s Bing AI you ll be able to talk to Bard like you would a friend using natural language instead of a stilted series of keywords quot You might ask Bard to give you tips to reach your goal of reading more books this year explain quantum physics in simple terms or spark your creativity by outlining a blog post quot Hsiao and Collins wrote The pair also said quot Bard is a direct interface to an LLM and we think of it as a complementary experience to Google Search quot Based on screenshots included in the announcement Bard s interface looks fairly similar to Bing AI with a few key differences At the bottom of each response Google s version offers four buttons thumbs up thumbs down a refresh arrow and a button saying quot Google it quot There s also an option at the top right of the response that says quot View other drafts quot Bing AI doesn t have these instead using the space below each response as an area for source citations While Bing AI runs on OpenAI s GPT Bard is powered by quot a lightweight and optimized version quot of Google s LaMDA and the company said it quot will be updated with newer more capable models over time quot At its last I O developer conference Google showed off an AI Test Kitchen app for people to interact with LaMDA which it also unveiled then The input bar at the bottom of the screen also has a couple of differences Bard has a microphone symbol at the end indicating speech to text might be supported while Bing doesn t Meanwhile Microsoft s offering has a broom icon on the left of the text input bar to clean the slate when you want to start on a new topic Google s doesn t It s also worth noting that below Bard s text field is a line of fine print that reads quot Bard may display inaccurate or offensive information that doesn t represent Google s views quot GoogleIn its announcement Google was careful to acknowledge that large language models LLMs like LaMDA aren t perfect and that mistakes happen quot For instance because they learn from a wide range of information that reflects real world biases and stereotypes those sometimes show up in their outputs quot Hsiao and Collins wrote They even shared an example of where Bard has gone wrong before quot When asked to share a couple suggestions for easy indoor plants Bard convincingly presented ideas…but it got some things wrong like the scientific name for the ZZ plant quot nbsp Google said that it s important to know such challenges exist and noted that quality and safety are significant issues to consider quot We ve also built in guardrails like capping the number of exchanges in a dialogue to try to keep interactions helpful and on topic quot Hsiao and Collins wrote It s not yet clear what the limit on the number of exchanges in a dialogue is though and we ve asked Google for clarification and will update this post when we hear back In spite of all its potential limits and possibility for error Google still believes Bard is worth the work adding that it will quot continue to improve Bard and add capabilities including coding more languages and multimodal experiences quot Hsiao and Collins said that Bard s help in writing the announcement post involved creating an outline and suggesting edits quot It didn t always get things right quot they said quot But even then it made us laugh quot This article originally appeared on Engadget at |
