Best Practices for Writing on DEV Tone of VoiceHey again Sloan here We re sharing some tips for success when it comes to writing on DEV If you ve been looking to improve your technical writing skills make the most of DEV as a blogging platform and take your content to the next level ーthis series is for you The first two posts in the series were about creating a series and formatting This one is about tone of voice and the next one is about topics Let s get started Tone of VoiceWhen it comes to writing your tone of voice is the manner in which you re speaking to the audience In order to succeed on DEV we recommend writing with a tone of voice that is friendly inclusive and non condescending To learn more about how to utilize tone of voice in content writing check out this awesome resource from the Nielsen Norman Group TitleYour post s title is your first chance to make a good impression A lot of factors come into play when deciding on the perfect post title If you are interested in optimizing your content for search engines you might have learned how to stuff your title with keywords The truth is while these things might make your content more likely to be visible to search engines…they sometimes make them less appealing for your human readers If you re trying to catch users attention you might lead with a big claim to bait your readers to click you know…clickbait While this seems like a good idea and sometimes works to get those initial clicks readers will be disappointed when they get to your article and realize that there actually isn t “One Amazing JavaScript Trick That Will Blow Your Mind Change Your Life and Automate Your Laundry We recommend using a title that sparks curiosity but is true to the content We also recommend limiting use of emoji in your title for accessibility reasons ーyou can learn more about that from this article from Accessible Social Be yourselfThe best way to add some personality to your content is to let your own personality shine through and speak from your own experience It s much more engaging to read a story about how you created your first Ruby gem than a generic explainer on creating a gem that s copy and pasted from the docs Being yourself also means not being a robot in the literal sense Here at DEV we re just as excited and a little scared about ChatGPT as you are That s why we wrote a set of guidelines for AI assisted content on DEV Check them out at the link below Guidelines for AI assisted Articles on DEV Erin Bensinger for The DEV Team・Dec ・ min read meta chatgpt writing abotwrotethis Be inclusiveIn order to make DEV a safe fun and helpful place for all developers we take inclusivity very seriously In short we ask that you abide by our Code of Conduct use inclusive language and not make assumptions about community members gender identities or pronouns If you re interested in fostering inclusivity on the web we recommend checking out the Self Defined dictionary Is it kind necessary and true I like to use this three prong test to decide whether or not to share a particular communication Is it kind In other words is it stated in a way that s friendly inclusive and assumes good intentions Is it necessary In other words does it need to be said for the reader to understand my point Is it true In other words am I conveying information that I know to be true without misleading the reader With these tips in mind you can t go wrong when it comes to tone of voice in your writing on DEV Happy writing The next installment of this series will be about topics |

Simple mutations with TanStack Query and Next.js |
https://dev.to/elisabethleonhardt/simple-mutations-with-tanstack-query-and-nextjs-4b0m
|
Simple mutations with TanStack Query and Next jsMutations with TanStack Query have always been a little scary at least until I decided to give them a try After using them a lot there is no turning back So today I want to show you how you can write your first mutation and guide you through the little pitfalls that can happen along the way The code for this example is in this repository which contains a collection of TanStack proof of concepts I wrote The mutation we are talking about is here What are mutations for Mutations are designed to be used for everything that s not a GET operation so we can use them to POST PUT and or DELETE data To make it simple I set up a mock database with json server and a few todo items that our beloved characters from the Rick and Morty universe will have to do during the episodes Don t forget to execute npm run json server to start it up We want the result to look something like this Create a new todoLet s start with writing the function for the actual POST first This should be very straightforward async function createTodo todo const response await fetch http localhost todos method POST headers content type application json body JSON stringify id nanoid user todo user task todo task done false const result await response json if response ok throw new Error result message return result This just uses fetch to send a post request with the todo passed in as an argument and returns the result An error is thrown if something goes wrong Now we can create a form to write our todos into lt form onSubmit onFormSubmit className grid grid cols gap gt lt div className flex gap items end gt lt label htmlFor user className text xl font bold gt User lt label gt lt input type text className text black flex name user id user onChange changeTodo value todo user gt lt div gt lt div className flex gap items end gt lt label htmlFor task className text xl font bold gt Task lt label gt lt input type text className text black flex name task id task onChange changeTodo value todo task gt lt div gt lt button type submit className justify self end gt create todo lt button gt lt form gt of course this also requires some state and functions that handle state change const todo setTodo useState user task function changeTodo e const newObject newObject e target name e target value setTodo todo newObject now that this is set up let s look at the mutation itself The useMutation hook has only one mandatory argument which is the function that posts to our API and which has to return a Promise In our case that would be const createTodoMutation useMutation createTodo Now the only thing left to do is to tell the form to actually mutate data every time a todo is submitted You can do this for example in the onSubmit handler function onFormSubmit e e preventDefault createTodoMutation mutate todo So let s recap The user types a todo into the field and clicks submit In the submit handler the default is prevented and the mutate function for the useMutation hook is called As an argument it takes the data you want to pass to the createTodo function The createTodo function makes the API call and now you should see that json server indicates the POST request in his logs Also your new todo should be visible inside the db json file List all todosThat s all nice and good but we still can t see our todos on the page the form only allows us to submit new ones So let s add some quick code to visualize our todos We need a function to fetch from our API async function fetchTodos return fetch http localhost todos then res gt res json In our component we can use the useQuery hook to obtain our todos const todos useQuery todos fetchTodos To make my code a litte cleaner I created an extra todo component function Todo todo return lt div className bg white text black rounded lg grid grid cols auto fr auto items center gap py px gt lt input type checkbox checked todo done onChange e gt changeTodoStatus e todo id gt lt p gt todo task lt p gt lt Image src todo user alt profile picture className rounded full height with gt lt Image gt lt div gt And now we only need to iterate over our todos and show them like so todos isLoading lt span className loader gt lt span gt null lt div className grid grid cols gap pt gt todos isSuccess todos data map todo gt lt Todo todo todo key todo id gt lt Todo gt null lt div gt We are done right If you tried this you would expect the new todo to appear automatically after you created it but this doesn t happen That s because we never told our useQuery hook to update it s query Since the database changed we have to find a way for the hooks to communicate with each other Couldn t maybe the useMutation hook tell the useQuery hook that is has to update the cache Yes it can and that s what we are going to do Let s change our previous useMutation hook for the following const queryClient useQueryClient const changeTodoMutation useMutation updateTodo onSuccess gt queryClient invalidateQueries queryKeys todos We are deciding to invalidate the queries that contain the queryKey todos which is a declarative way to ask TanStack query to update the corresponding data We could also do something like queryClient refetch queryKeys todos which would be imperative but the recommended way is just to invalidate the cache and let the library handle the rest ConclusionThat s a very basic example I have used a lot Posting something and immediately refetching it to keep the UI updated Maybe you already suspect how to update a single todo Try it yourself and then check the solution TypeScript Runtime Type Checking |
https://dev.to/aziznal/typescript-runtime-type-checking-dmo
|
TypeScript Runtime Type Checking IntroTypescript is the best thing to happen to Javascript since the Great Callback Pyramid crumbled We got types autocomplete compile time issue catching and the world was finally at peace until someone decided to use instanceof yes it was me You see even though we got all of the aforementioned goodies there are still a few quirks of the typescript type system that may fly under the radar since they don t arise often especially when you re writing relatively simple applications In this article I want to dive into the topic of objects Specifically the different ways an object can be instantiated why they matter and how the instanceof operator can be used misused I ll back everything up with a practical example about error handling and show you how we can get the flexibility of typescript s structured typing system with the power of runtime object type checks An Example Use caseYou re a frontend dev and you ve been asked to implement error handling for an application Let s say for this application that the types of errors you need to handle are authentication errorsbackend errorsany uncaught errors that don t fit into the previous two types Let s see how we would implement something for that What if we only used typescript Like a good developer we start things simple by creating a type for each of our errors type AuthError reason string type BackendError reason string type UnknownError reason string Right out of the gate we have a few major issues To typescript these are all the same thingTo javascript these don t even existCode RepetitionLet s move on to something better What if we used classes Good idea After all classes are also available during runtime which solves the second issue class AuthError constructor public reason string class BackendError constructor public reason string class UnknownError constructor public reason string We still have two issues These are still the same thing for typescript and we re still repeating ourselves The code repeating issue is simple enough to take care of We can make a super class and have the others extend it class CustomError constructor public reason string class AuthError extends CustomError class BackendError extends CustomError class UnknownError extends CustomError The code above is perfectly valid Though typescript can t tell the difference maybe we don t need it do After all we can use instanceof and the following code works perfectly fine function handleError error CustomError if error instanceof AuthError do something else if error instanceof BackendError do something else if error instanceof UnknownError do something Great Now we took care of all issues we mentioned before but the article is not finished yet Uh oh Something is about to change your view about something in javascript The issue is hidden in how instanceof works In the simplest terms someObject instanceof SomeClass returns true if someObject was created by or inherits from SomeClass s constructor meaning there has to be a new keyword in their somewhere Big deal so what We ll just throw our errors like this throw new AuthError Session is expired or something Okay fair enough except that this is the wild untamed land of javascript where you could also do this throw reason Session is expired or something Zero warnings Zero errors But that s the not even the worst part You ve just lost the ability to check this at runtime const errorObj AuthError reason Session is expired or something console log errorObj instanceof AuthError gt Falseinstanceof does NOT work when you don t use instantiate objects with the new keyword Even though this is a rather unlikely issue I ve personally lost faith in instanceof Whenever an issue happens in this area of the code a little voice in my head will keep telling me What if it s because of that really rare bug you read about once We need a different approach One that saves us from the quirks of javascript and allows typescript to truly shine Back to types againIntroducing tags A tag is simply a property with constant value which placed in a type allowing us to confidently narrow the type of a given object during both compile time and runtime Here s how we could define our errors now type AuthError reason string errorType auth error lt tag type BackendError reason string errorType backend error lt tag type UnknownError reason string errorType unknown error lt tag type CustomError AuthError BackendError UnknownError Interestingly CustomError is now on the bottom of our hierarchy instead of at the top Using the union operator we tell typescript that a CustomError is one of any of the given types We are able to narrow which one it is exactly using the tag Here s how the handleError function can be re written function handleError error CustomError switch error errorType case auth error case backend error default The coolest part Typescript is helping you along every step of the way and is fully aware of exactly the type of error you re handling Note that for this to work the tag needs to have the same name for all the types errorType in the above example If you re interested in how to print the types this way using check out this extension I m not affiliated just think it s awesome Now it wouldn t even matter if we rawdog it and throw objects directly Typescript would get mad and force us to add a tag ERROR Property errorType is missing in type reason string but required in type AuthError const errorObject AuthError reason string throw errorObject ConclusionIn conclusion this article underscores the importance of understanding Typescript and Javascript type systems explained with an error handling example Through a step by step exploration we discovered that using tags is a powerful reliable solution This approach takes advantage of Typescript s structured typing system and allows for runtime object type checks resulting in more robust and maintainable code By mastering these nuances we can fully harness Typescript s potential while avoiding language pitfalls For more insight into typescript I highly recommend the Effective Typescript book by Dan Vanderkam Magic The Gathering publisher Wizards of the Coast sent the Pinkertons after a leakerWhen a highly anticipated set of Magic The Gathering cards leaked on YouTube last week it s hard to imagine anyone would have guessed the incident would end with the involvement of one of the most infamous private security firms in the world But that s exactly what happened after YouTuber Oldschoolmtg uploaded an unboxing video featuring a collection of March of the Machine The Aftermath booster packs If you re not familiar Aftermath is an upcoming card Magic The Gathering set Wizards of the Coast will release on May th It s billed as a supplement to the game s current March of the Machine expansion which has been available since April st Predictably Oldschoolmtg s unboxing video was all anyone in the Magic The Gathering community could talk about in recent days Based on Wizards of the Coast s reaction it s safe to say the video also irked the Hasbro owned publisher Over the weekend Oldchoolmtg uploaded another video this time titled “The Aftermath of The Aftermath…Everything is Gone In the clip the YouTuber says Pinkerton agents showed up at his home on Saturday morning and began demanding he hand over the “stolen product “I got up and recorded some videos Oldschoolmtg states “Right after I got done with the video dogs started barking because somebody is at the door I come out and the wife s answering the door and it was the Pinkertons If you live in the US the Pinkertons need no introduction The company is one of the country s oldest private security firms with its original incarnation the Pinkerton Detective Agency dating back to During the late th and early th centuries the Pinkertons made a name for themselves with their anti union operations a job they continue to do in the st century Oldschoolmtg speculates the person he bought the unreleased cards from likely didn t know they sent him an unreleased set “Somebody screwed up and sent out the wrong cases to the gentlemen that I bought the boxes off of because when he sold me the stuff he said he was selling me March of the Machine collector s boxes ーnot Aftermath After recovering the leaked Magic The Gathering set including the empty boxes and wrappers the Pinkertons put Oldschoolmtg in touch with a Wizards of the Coast representative who was “very apologetic about making my wife cry first thing in the morning by sending these heavy duty lawmen A Wizards of the Coast spokesperson confirmed to Polygon and Kotaku that the company sent the private security firm to Oldschoolmtg as “part of their investigation into the leak The YouTuber says the contact they spoke to at Wizards of the Coast offered to send them free products as compensation for what had happened For what it s worth his YouTube viewership has also doubled since the original video went up This article originally appeared on Engadget at |
