海外TECH DEV Community What I learned as a Subject Matter Expert while creating my product https://dev.to/dimanikulin/what-i-learned-as-a-subject-matter-expert-while-creating-my-product-a42 What I learned as a Subject Matter Expert while creating my product Multimedia IR systemsMy first step in the role of an SME was getting to know what Multimedia Data is I started learning it as I understood that my whole photo album is Multimedia Data itself Then I realised that I need to use a solution to search for Multimedia Data Multimedia IR systems However there are many Multimedia IR systems and it was a long way to select one of them to start searching more efficiently Thus several Multimedia IR systems that are present on the market and available for end users were analyzed I described the process of analysis and comparison for Multimedia IR systems here Consequently I was able to choose the most suitable system for me MetadataA short usage of these systems gave me an understanding that Multimedia IR systems significantly rely on the metadata as a main information source that is used for a search following different criteria like device time location etc Therefore the presence and consistency of metadata are very important for Multimedia IR systems to operate as well as for other purposes please see Three Cheers for Embedded Metadata for more details Working experience with one of those systems shows that search results might be incomplete or even incorrect due to inconsistent or not existing metadata Metadata is usually kept inside each file as a header with a predefined format There are plenty of metadata formats like Exif IPTC or XMP The reasons for incorrect and absent metadata are quite different from not setting proper data on the device that takes photos to privacy issues This resource describes metadata importance in more detail and there is information about other reasons for incorrect and absent metadata Examples of incorrect search resultsLet s consider two examples of incorrect search results In the first case we tried to search for photos with existing Geo positions and to see them on a map A search returned four photos taken near Ghana marked by a red circle In fact nobody took photos near Ghana In the second case we searched for photos taken in We got one video that was recognized as March underlined in red The system has provided such results due to incorrect metadata Multimedia OrganizersThat being the case I understood that Multimedia IR systems are not so effective without other tools often called Multimedia Organizers Usually Multimedia Organizers provide automation for importing a new photo set into existing photo albums and it is not an implemented feature in Multimedia IR systems In addition they might identify and address some issues that shall be fixed before a user starts searching data using the Multimedia IR systems IntegrationThen I started studying Multimedia IR systems the FVA Tool Set shall integrate with Integration with offline Multimedia IR systems is implemented through integration with digiKam and integration with online Multimedia IR systems is implemented through integration with Google Photos As Multimedia IR systems perform a search by certain criteria based on multimedia metadata the FVA Software shall be able to work with the same multimedia metadata to be integrated with Multimedia IR systems Integration with digiKamFor digiKam I found that the Collections setting shall be used to define how it is configured to search through multimedia data Monitor the albums for external changes requires restart setting shall be enabled Taking into account this setting digiKam will pick up external changes in the collection as soon as FVA Tool Set puts it in However from the FVA Tool Set side it is required to provide a possibility to configure storage in a way to be able to put multimedia data processed and to be integrated with digiKam Therefore a separate UI screen shall be created to ask a user what storage location digiKam should be used for incoming multimedia data For example a directory C FVA is selected for Local Collections as shown in the picture above Therefore when a user wants to integrate multimedia data after processing by FVA Tool Set he she shall be able to select the C FVA directory as a directory in UI to put the processed multimedia data in As soon as it is done FVA Tool Set will put multimedia data into a selected directory and the Multimedia IR system will be able to search through it Integration with Google PhotosIntegration with Google Photos is implemented in the same way First of all it s worth noting that Google Photos shall be configured to be integrated with FVA Tool Set Thus appropriate file types and folders shall be set up as in the figure below For example Pictures and fromDevices directories are selected for the folder settings as shown above It means that when a user wants to integrate multimedia data after processing by FVA Tool Set he she shall be able to select the fromDevices or Pictures directory on the UI screen as a directory to put processed multimedia data in As soon as it is done FVA Tool Set will put multimedia data into a selected directory and Google Photos will be able to search through it as soon as it synchronizes multimedia data 2023-05-01 15:28:03
海外TECH DEV Community How (not) to spend $15000 per month with AWS Athena https://dev.to/aws-builders/how-not-to-spend-15000-per-month-with-aws-athena-1fn8 How not to spend per month with AWS AthenaIn the s traffic in downtown Boston was nearly unbearable so city planners came up with a plan to reroute the highway tunnel below downtown Boston The project was nicknamed the Big Dig Construction started in and when it finished in the final price tag was around billion dollars about twice the original cost that was expected Source This is a story about a software project that ran over budget due to organizational mishaps no oversight and no awareness of cost Spoiler alert No actual query analysis is shown in the article I am not a SQL expert more of an observer with a passion for writing and with hindsight Before we dive deeper into the money bleeding monster here s a bit of background Cost of a projectTotal cost of ownership TCO is the total cost of owning software over its entire lifecycle including the initial building price and ongoing charges such as maintenance human capital investments resource allocation and opportunity costs Source A software product can make financial sense if the value it provides to the organization is greater than the TCO over its lifespan The cost of this particular software product whose main part was the Athena query was around per month in its operational phase excluding the cost of making it At one point it was more expensive than RDS databases Its value to the business is hard to determine because it provided data for dashboards Cost breakdown per service for October The organizationThe organization and its people built this product during a difficult period with COVID financial insecurity and layoffs looming over everyone and everything I m sure they did their best under the circumstances and this article is in no way meant to criticize Most software development in this organization is done with pizza teams working in week sprints to deliver peer reviewed code that runs in the cloud configured by infrastructure as code Decent operational monitoring and alerting exists and it works Our money bleeding monster was an outlier it was built by one developer Read on to understand how serverless can be expensive Cost awareness or lack of itFrom the initial idea about this product over its design and creation all the way through delivery no one sat down to calculate how much it would cost Architecture design and development was done by a single developer to fulfill a business need But it is not the fault of that developer that the TCO calculation was not done Business stakeholders and product owners usually think about TCO and whether a software product makes financial sense A developer could have calculated with a fair amount of certainty the operational costs of the product AWS Athena pricing is dead simple per terrabyte of data scanned Fourth grade math at best So what failed then There was no one to ask the question How much will this query cost No systematic cost reportingAWS infrastructure used by the organization is managed through code and it is uniformly tagged Some of those tags include a project name the environment where the project is running DEV PROD and owner cost center It would be trivially easy to create a monthly cost report using AWS Cost Explorer or any similar tool The report could break down cost per project environment and cost center and it could be sent to owners for review So what failed then There is always something more pressing to work on No one cares about these cost reports so the platform team never prioritized them Managed service misuseAWS Athena is a serverless analytics service with capability to query structured data from AWS S and other data sources using SQL like syntax In our case data was uploaded to an AWS S bucket from Kafka Kafka is the backbone for all microservices and a large chunk of business data flows through it All that data ends up in an S bucket and is partitioned to support WHERE clauses in queries Having a WHERE clause tells Athena to scan only the data partition that matches it Partitioning schema is based on YEAR MONTH DAY pattern so an example query can look like SELECT style id FROM schema SALESWHERE month AND day AND color blueThis would return all the style IDs of all blue clothing items that were sold on th of November So far so good The real query did not use any WHERE clauses This might be acceptable in the DEV environment and personally I d use LIMIT Not acceptable in the PROD environment especially when the volume of data will only ever go up The ever growing amount of data in PROD meant that every time the query ran it scanned more and more datait scanned all the data even data it does not needCost report for AWS Athena from June to November Athena is truly serverless and it will happily scan scale and charge you for what it scanned Scan everything On it boss Scan some more Don t mind if I do Using a WHERE clause can drastically reduce the amount of data scanned which directly correlates to incurred costs It will also shorten the query execution time So what failed then There was no one to ask the question Can this query be improved One person team Architecture design and development on this product was done by a single developer He had no help no one to discuss ideas with no one to review his code Commits made and merged by the same person Every developer has the responsibility to write good software Every human being has the right to make mistakes So what failed then The organization should not have allowed this The developer was not set up for success from day one One person is not a team LearningsI hope it goes without saying but do the opposite of what the points above illustrate Also here are some learnings we acquired over time Do the mathOperations phase is an important phase of every product service That is when they generate value for the organization This phase is hopefully also the longest Because of these two facts understanding operational costs of the product is very important Calculate them early Own itAnd I really mean OWN IT All of it Product s lifecycle is in its infancy when you ship the code it doesn t end there All the logs metrics alerts bills etc that the product creates must be owned by someone Inform and be informedIf I tell you that on average an ice cream costs where I live that s data But if I add that the ice cream truck passes my house every day that s information and temptation that you can use to buy cheap ice cream every day TB of data scanned with Athena costs and that s a fact Knowing that your query will scan close to TB each time it runs is valuable information Be informed and inform business stakeholders too Friends or foesManaged services can be great friends With all the heavy lifting they do and a tendency to reduce prices over time one would be hard pressed to not use them You can make sure they stay your friends by owning your product and creating appropriate billing alerts Even hardcore serverless teams experience runaway costs but they catch them early Luc van Donkersgoed donkersgood How a single line bug cost us in AWS spend We recently refactored a Lambda Function We extensively tested its functionality and released it into production And everything still worked as expected But then the billing alarm went off repost with sanitized images AM Mar In case you re wondering the query was improved and it now costs a fraction of what it cost before And if you re thinking that the money that was wasted on a poor query could have been used to hire more people I agree with you We humans learn and evolve our whole lives but so do organizations Learning from our own mistakes is the most difficult but those lessons tend to stick the longest I can only hope that this organization has enough knowledge management capacity to prevent scenarios like this one in the future Otherwise the myth that serverless is expensive will live on High cost comes from sloppy code bad development practices and processes in the organization that allow those to happen GCP Cloud Blog Track, Trace and Triumph: How Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is harnessing Google Cloud to protect the state’s wildlife https://cloud.google.com/blog/topics/public-sector/track-trace-and-triumph-how-utah-division-wildlife-resources-harnessing-google-cloud-protect-states-wildlife/ Track Trace and Triumph How Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is harnessing Google Cloud to protect the state s wildlifeA few years back it would ve taken more than half a day for an official of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources DWR part of the Utah Department of Natural Resources DNR to track a Rocky Mountain elk The process involved hauling a very high frequency VFH antenna to several locations until it picked up the signal from the elk s radio collar The official would then triangulate the animal s approximate location by picking up the signal from multiple locations surrounding the elk Given the complexity and manual labor involved Utah DWR could track a single collared animal only once in a fortnight or even a month  Fast forward to and now Utah DWR officials can get real time location data for thousands of animals without leaving their office What s more they can overlay today s location data with up to years of historical information to make data driven decisions to improve wildlife habitat and populations using the state s Wildlife Tracker application running on Google Cloud With this application DWR can better gauge how wildlife interacts with the landscape over time identify new migration routes assess areas that need habitat improvements or determine where to put fences or crossing structures to keep animals from crossing roads in areas with high collision risks These alerts on the movements of animals over time are also enabling real time situational analysis such as how wildfires or drought impact populations and migration patterns  According to Jessie Shapiro GIS project manager for the Utah DWR “We are now able to know and understand our wildlife so much better We understand patterns of migration causes of death and can obtain individual data points for thousands of animals It has opened our eyes to how the animals are using the landscape and what interventions we need for their safety and protection  Singular queries less worriesBefore moving to Google Cloud Utah DWR officials said they had very little insight into the behavior of the state s wildlife For instance by the time officials reached the site of the corpse of a dead animal with a radio collar scavengers had already gotten to it making it nearly impossible to determine the cause of death As Shapiro said “We were not realizing the true potential of what the data was telling and we needed to change that The backend legacy system processing the GPS data from thousands of animals radio collars was also riddled with inefficiencies Queries often led to complete system crashes and it took days to get historical data in a format that was easy to understand and act upon The staff wanted these tools but were frustrated with the inability to use them efficiently With the database expected to surpass million GPS locations modernizing the system was critical for the department to scale and make data driven decisions  In Google Public Sector helped Utah DWR rebuild their Wildlife Tracker application on Google Cloud The aim of the project was to create a serverless data warehouse that helped them to scale rapidly and take away the concerns regarding limited resources hardware and other management tools With BigQuery a completely serverless enterprise data warehouse solution DWR officials can quickly search their database of historical data to identify animal behavioral patterns A cloud based solution also makes its data warehouse infinitely scalable without having to worry about hardware upgrades as its dataset continues to grow at pace  Setting a new standardSince the implementation went live in August Google Cloud has helped DWR eliminate lag from their radio collar tracking system Now DWR officials can search over years of historical data with a single query in minutes rather than days They are also able to better understand and utilize their data to determine data based population management evaluate migration and the effect of climate patterns and better track wildlife births and mortality As for tracking that Rocky Mountain elk today all it takes is one query and under a minute to zero in on its exact location see where it s been and determine its pattern of movement   DWR s pioneering work is leading to new data driven approaches to support its mission to help sustain enhance and conserve wildlife in Utah for generations to come 2023-05-01 16:00:00
