海外TECH DEV Community Hiring without Algorithm Quizzes https://dev.to/plank/hiring-without-algorithm-quizzes-2mpb Hiring without Algorithm Quizzes The ProblemI have a strong dislike for algorithm style technical interviews I understand their relevance in large enterprises as a basic test for evaluating engineers abilities However at Plank we re a tight knit team of developers and algorithm style questions don t align with what we re looking for We seek developers with tangible skills that can bring value to our clients Since each of our developers eventually takes on project leadership and architecture we need abstract abilities that go beyond straightforward issue solving As we hire a new developer or two per year we prefer to keep our technical assessments more open ended However for our latest hire I stumbled upon an approach that I believe holds value and could develop into an interesting procedure for future hires The SolutionI decided to model the technical examination after a real world issue that a developer might encounter nothing revolutionary there Essentially I would ask the candidate to implement a super simplified version of a project we ve previously shipped like The Canadian Encyclopedia check out our case study on it here Since doing all that work alone would be too overwhelming we collaborate with the candidates to build out a prototype together I can already hear you shouting But Massimo how could you possibly handle all that work for so many different candidates Well my friend the answer is pretty obvious I automated it Our procedure involves having the candidate create a repository with a fresh Laravel install and adding me as a collaborator Once that s done I kick off a script that opens three issues describing features that need to be added Next it commits two new branches with code to solve two of the three issues and opens two pull requests PRs for those branches explaining the features added to varying degrees Finally it s the candidate s job to review the two PRs and provide input as they would if they were hired They then open a PR for the final issue I ve made an effort to capture the experience of working at Plank so that candidates can get a taste of what it s like while also giving them numerous opportunities to shine in various ways So What About the Automation Ah the automation As I mentioned earlier I kept it simple for the first iteration I created a bash script that clones the candidate s project uses Git to commit files and create branches and leverages the GH CLI tool to create the PRs among other things I named this script Autodev It may not be much but I absolutely loved using it Now let s take a closer look at what it does The ScriptFirst things first we need to grab the repository and create the issues bin zshecho Enter the target repository name e g plank repo name shellcheck disable SCread repo Grab the repocd target exitgit clone git github com repo git projectcd project exit Create issues to be solved gh issue create title Users need to be able to view or create articles body file issue md assignee me gh issue create title Users need to take and create quizzes body file issue md assignee me gh issue create title Users need to be able to browse event timelines body file issue mdAs you can see I used body files to store the PR details I wanted to keep as many things as possible outside of the script making it easy to repurpose if needed in the future However the more I think about it the more I m inclined to turn this into a fully fledged web tool or CLI utility But that s a plan for the future Next we needed to create the two PRs so I added two blocks that look like this PR Check out a new branch amp set upstreamgit checkout b article featuregit push set upstream origin article feature Commit each feature one by one Copy everything into the target folder the dir we re in except the routes folderrsync av pr git add app Models databasegit commit m feat add definition of articles model migration and factory git add app Httpgit commit m feat add controller functions for interacting with articles cat routes routes stub gt gt routes web phprm rf routes routes stubgit add routesgit commit m feat register controller routes with RESTful methods Push changesgit push Create PRgh pr create title Add Article CRUD feature body file pr body mdgit checkout mainIn this code block I maintain a file structure of my changed files in a folder called pr n I simply copy the files over to the target project and add some atomic ish commits Ideally I d have a way to list these commits externally perhaps in a JSON file and iterate over them This would prevent the need to update the script in the future Following the same procedure as creating issues I use a body file for each PR Finally we clean up with Delete target repo foldercd rm rf projectAnd call it a day ResultsI won t lie I was shocked at how well this approach worked The script never failed on me even with the variability of what candidates could have committed It sparked plenty of meaningful discussions with candidates and I hope provided them with an enjoyable challenge During the interview we would discuss their comments and how they could guide their pair programmer to improve a line they left a comment on We would also review their implemented feature highlighting what they felt they did well and areas that needed improvement To add another layer I asked candidates to help me debug an issue I faced when testing their feature since I genuinely believe that debugging is an essential part of the interview process One thing I ve learned about hiring is that there isn t just one right way to approach it It s an inherently human process and as much as I enjoy trying and failing to automate away my problems it s crucial to strike a balance I believe this approach achieves that balance by reducing excessive evaluation work while still maintaining a personal touch We believe in the power of human connection and continuous improvement As we evolve our hiring process we remain committed to creating an environment where both evaluators and candidates can flourish Sharing our experiences and insights is essential to collectively improving the hiring landscape for everyone involved We encourage everyone reading this to share their hiring processes as well It s in our best interest to share what we ve learned to improve the process for both evaluators and candidates alike 2023-05-15 19:45:16
海外TECH DEV Community Java records and why you should use them https://dev.to/pythonisnotasnake/java-records-and-why-you-should-use-them-1bbn Java records and why you should use themIf your are a beginner in learning java you have heard of the basics like classes methods enums and so on But since java records are permanently added to the java feature set This short tutorial will give you explanation what records in java are and some tips how to use them in your next project All informations in this tutorial are from the java records documentation and my own experience What are records Easily explained records are an abstraction of java beans A record defines automatically an all arguments constructor and give public access to all properties of the record A record does not have any other methods It is only a stupid java object without any functionality How to implement a recordSimilar to enums a record can be part of a java class or a file by its own As example we want to define a fraction A fraction consists of a numerator and a denominator If we want to write it as a classic java class it would look like this public class Fraction private double numerator private double denominator public Fraction this numerator this denominator public Fraction double numerator double denominator this numerator numerator this denominator denominator public void setNumerator double numerator this numerator numerator public double getNumerator return this numerator public void setDenominator double denominator this denominator denominator public double getDenominator return this denominator As you can see this is many code only to define a class with two attributes And now let us see how this will be look as a record public record Fraction double numerator double denominator Short right And this is the most important reason to use records This single line bundles a all arguments constructor and the two public attributes numerator and denominator If you want to create a new instance of this record you will do this as you do it for regular classes Fraction fractionAsRecord new Fraction Override constructor and getter setterIf the default constructor and getter setter methods do not match your use case you can override them For a constructor you will do it like this public record Fraction double numerator double denominator public Fraction double numerator double denominator if numerator amp amp denominator throw new java lang IllegalArgumentException Invalid fraction numerator denominator this numerator numerator this denominator denominator How you can see it does not need the override annotation as usual The same can be done with the methods double numerator or void numerator double numerator Static attributes and methodsNow we came to a advanced function of records Records give you the ability to define static attributes and static methods For our example we want to divide our fraction with the number two So we can declare a static attribute static double half and a static method static Fraction divideByTwo Fraction fr public record Fraction double numerator double denominator static double half public static Fraction divideByTwo Fraction fr return new Fraction fr numerator fr denominator half The method above can be called by Fraction divideByTwo fraction As you can see you can expand records with your needed methods as long as they are static This will give you a little more flexibility in use of records Other useful featuresIn the java documentation are a number of advanced features that I will mention but not explain in all details You can find them in the link above under the section Features of Record Classes Personally the aspect to let a record implement some interfaces is the most useful for me For example you can define some basic methods for a group of records I give you an easy example with the interface Mathobject public interface Mathobject public Mathobject divideByTwo If we let implement our fraction this interface we can rewrite our static method divideByTwo This looks like this public record Fraction double numerator double denominator implements Mathobject static double half Override public Fraction multiplyByTwo return new Fraction numerator denominator half The record override the method of the interface Mathobject and let us use the two attributes from fraction directly inside of the method because this is a non static method ConclusionWhat makes records so useful at the end They produce significantly less boiler code Every experience java developer knows records and can understand the short code very easily So it makes your code more understandable and cleaner And the much important aspect of all is the significantly less code to write which save you time Keep coding 2023-05-15 19:26:42

海外TECH Engadget The best smartwatches for 2023 https://www.engadget.com/best-smartwatches-153013118.html?src=rss The best smartwatches for Just a few years ago the case for buying a smartwatch was unclear The market wasn t as saturated as it is today and features were more limited Today the wearable world is filled with various high quality options and a few key players like the Apple Watch Samsung Galaxy Watch and Fitbit Versa have muscled their way to the front of the pack with their smart features Chances are if you re reading this guide you ve probably already decided that it s time to upgrade whatever gadget s on your wrist be it a standard timepiece or an aging smartwatch Regardless of which category you fall into the list of specs you ll want to consider before deciding which is the best smartwatch for you to buy is a long one and we ll help you make sense of it What to look for in a smartwatchCherlynn LowCompatibilityApple Watches only work with iPhones while Wear OS devices play nice with both iOS and Android phones Smartwatches made by Samsung Garmin Fitbit and others are also compatible with Android and iOS but you ll need to install a companion app The smartwatch OS will also dictate the type and number of third party apps you ll have access to Many of these aren t useful though making this factor a fairly minor one in the grand scheme of things PriceThe best smartwatches generally cost between and Compared to budget smartwatches which cost between and these pricier devices have advanced communications music and fitness features They also often include perks like onboard GPS tracking music storage and NFC which budget devices generally don t Some companies make specialized fitness watches Those can easily run north of and we d only recommend them to serious athletes Luxury smartwatches from brands like TAG Heuer and Hublot can also reach sky high prices but we wouldn t endorse any of them These devices can cost more than and you re usually paying for little more than a brand name and some needlessly exotic selection of build materials Battery lifeBattery life remains one of our biggest complaints about smartwatches but there s hope as of late You can expect two full days from Apple Watches and most Wear OS devices Watches using the Snapdragon Wear processor support extended battery modes that promise up to five days of battery life on a charge ーif you re willing to shut off most features aside from you know displaying the time Snapdragon s next gen Wear and processors were announced in but only a handful of devices some of which aren t even available yet are using them so far Other models can last five to seven days but they usually have fewer features and lower quality displays Meanwhile some fitness watches can last weeks on a single charge A few smartwatches now support faster charging too For example Apple promises the Series can go from zero to percent power in only minutes and get to full charge in minutes The OnePlus Watch is even speedier powering up from zero to percent in just minutes Mind you that turned out to be one of the only good things about that device CommunicationAny smartwatch worth considering delivers call text and app notifications to your wrist Call and text alerts are self explanatory but if those mean a lot to you consider a watch with LTE They re more expensive than their WiFi only counterparts but cellular connectivity allows the smartwatch to take and receive phone calls and do the same with text messages without your device nearby As far as app alerts go getting them delivered to your wrist will let you glance down to the watch face and see if you absolutely need to check your phone right now Fitness trackingActivity tracking is a big reason why people turn to smartwatches An all purpose timepiece should function as a fitness tracker logging your steps calories and workouts and most of today s wearables have a heart rate monitor as well Many smartwatches fitness features include a built in GPS which is useful for tracking distance for runs and bike rides Swimmers will want something water resistant and thankfully most all purpose devices now can withstand at least a dunk in the pool Some smartwatches from companies like Garmin are more fitness focused than others and tend to offer more advanced features like heart rate variance tracking recovery time estimation onboard maps and more Health tracking on smartwatches has also seen advances over the years Both Apple and Fitbit devices can estimate blood oxygen levels and measure ECGs But the more affordable the smartwatch the less likely it is that it has these kinds of in depth health tracking features if collecting those kinds of wellness metrics is important to you you ll have to pay for the privilege EngadgetMusicYour watch can not only track your morning runs but also play music while you re exercising Many smartwatches let you save your music locally so you can connect wireless earbuds and listen to tunes without bringing your phone Those that don t have onboard storage for music usually have on watch music controls so you can control playback without whipping out your phone And if your watch has LTE local saving isn t required ーyou ll be able to stream music directly from the watch to your paired earbuds Always on displaysMost flagship smartwatches today have some an always on display some have it on by default while others let you enable it via tweaked settings This smart feature allows you to glance down at your watch to check the time and any other information you ve set it to show on its watchface without lifting your wrist This will no doubt affect your device s battery life but thankfully most always on modes dim the display s brightness so it s not running at its peak unnecessarily Cheaper devices won t have this feature instead their screens will automatically turn off to conserve battery life and you ll have to intentionally check your watch to turn on the display again NFCMany smartwatches have NFC letting you pay for things without your wallet using contactless payments After saving your credit or debit card information you can hold your smartwatch up to an NFC reader to pay for a cup of coffee on your way home from a run Keep in mind that different watches use different payment systems Apple Watches use Apple Pay Wear OS devices use Google Pay Samsung devices use Samsung Pay and so forth Apple Pay is one of the most popular NFC payment systems with support for multiple banks and credit cards in different countries while Samsung and Google Pay work in fewer regions It s also important to note that both NFC payment support varies by device as well for both Samsung and Google s systems Best overall Apple WatchThe Apple Watch has evolved into one of the best wearables on the market since its debut in It s the best smartwatch for iPhone users and we wouldn t judge you for switching to an iPhone just to be able to use an Apple Watch The latest model Apple Watch Series has solid fitness tracking features that will satisfy the needs of beginners and serious athletes alike It also detects if you ve been in a car crash can carry out electrocardiogram ECG tests and measures blood oxygen levels Plus this Apple smartwatch offers NFC onboard music storage and many useful apps as well as a variety of ways to respond to messages There aren t a ton of differences between the Series and the Series that came before it The design is largely unchanged and while the Apple Watch Series runs on a newer S SiP it didn t feel dramatically faster in our testing It lasted a little bit longer and we were impressed by the new low power mode which kept the watch going for an additional two hours after already being down to percent battery life There are two other options now at the opposite ends of the spectrum The new Apple Watch Ultra is probably overkill for most people but it has a ton of extra features like extra waterproofing to track diving an even more accurate GPS and the biggest battery of any Apple Watch to date Apple designed it for the most rugged among us but for your average person it likely has more features than they d ever need The Apple Watch SE on the other hand is less feature rich than the Series but it will probably suffice for most people We actually regard the Watch SE as the best smartwatch option for first time buyers or people on stricter budgets You ll get all the core Apple Watch features as well as things like fall and crash detection noise monitoring and emergency SOS but you ll have to do without more advanced hardware perks like an always on display a blood oxygen sensor an ECG monitor and a skin temperature sensor Buy Apple Watch Ultra at Amazon Buy Apple Watch SE at Amazon Best budget Fitbit Versa Dropping on a smartwatch isn t feasible for everyone which is why we recommend the Fitbit Versa as the best sub option It s our favorite budget watch because it offers a bunch of features at a great price You get all of these essentials Fitbit s solid exercise tracking abilities including auto workout detection sleep tracking water resistance connected GPS blood oxygen SpO tracking and a six day battery life It also supports Fitbit Pay using NFC and it has built in Amazon Alexa as a voice assistant While the Versa typically costs we ve seen it for as low as Best for Android users Samsung Galaxy Watch Samsung may not have brought many upgrades to the latest version of its popular Galaxy Watch but that doesn t mean the Watch isn t still the best smartwatch for Android users Improvements like a more durable screen and refined curvature don t sound exciting but they make the Watch more resilient and reliable Plus the Galaxy Watch offers the most comprehensive fitness and health tracking including body composition analysis on Wear OS and the company added a sleep coaching feature this year that is meant to help guide you towards better rest If you don t mind oversized watches consider the Galaxy Watch Pro It s more expensive at but comes with a larger mm titanium case a more durable screen and a larger battery Though Samsung markets this Android smartwatch as an outdoor oriented device you re better off thinking of it as a big timepiece that lasts longer than the standard model It has all the same smartwatch features as the mm and mm versions except it supports the GPX route format for workouts so you can get turn by turn directions while you hike and bike All three watches are also water resistant so they can track swims or survive a sudden storm and last more than a day without the Always On Display enabled They also run Wear OS which is so similar to Samsung s previous Tizen OS that longtime wearers won t need to worry about adjusting to a new system Ultimately the Galaxy Watch series is a capable well rounded set of smartwatches that will serve most Android users well Fashion forward optionsFossilYes there are still companies out there trying to make “fashionable smartwatches Back when wearables were novel and generally ugly brands like Fossil Michael Kors and Skagen found their niche in stylish smartwatches that took cues from analog timepieces You also have the option to pick up a “hybrid smartwatch from companies like Withings and Garmin these devices look like standard wrist watches but incorporate some limited functionality like activity tracking and heart rate monitoring They remain good options if you prefer that look but thankfully wearables made by Apple Samsung Fitbit and others have gotten much more attractive over the past few years Ultimately the only thing you can t change after you buy a smartwatch is its case design If you re not into the Apple Watch s squared off corners all of Samsung s smartwatches have round cases that look a little more like a traditional watch Most wearables are offered in a choice of colors and you can pay extra for premium materials like stainless steel Once you decide on a case your band options are endless there are dozens of first and third party watch straps available for most major smartwatches allowing you to change up your look whenever you please Cherlynn Low contributed to this guide This article originally appeared on Engadget at 2023-05-15 19:15:13
