海外TECH DEV Community Progressive Web Apps https://dev.to/anuradha9712/progressive-web-apps-1dd9 Progressive Web AppsHello folks In this article we ll learn about the Progressive web app in detail its advantages and how to create one on your own Let s learn how to create simple PWA using HTML CSS and vanilla JS What is PWA PWA stands for Progressive Web App PWAs are simply alternatives to creating a native mobile app It is a web application that is designed to provide an app like experience to users on their mobile devices or desktop browsers without the need to download and install a native app from an app store Using PWAs we can create a mobile app with vanilla javascript that runs inside a browser just like a normal website does but which could also consist of the features of native mobile apps so that when we run that web app on a mobile it could do things that a native app could do as well like Be installed onto the home screen of the mobileAccess the application when offlineGet push notifications Advantages of PWACan be made using vanilla JS HTML amp CSSAccessed via a web address and not the app storeCan be installed on the mobile home screenRuns in the browser but with access to device featuresCan be used offlineCan use web push notifications Technical components of PWAWe can simply create a progressive web app using the below components The Web App ManifestApplication ShellService WorkersDon t worry if this sounds like bit complicated we ll look into these components one by one Basic SetupWe will create a simple web app with three pages Home About Contact and later on convert it into PWA Let s build a basic setup of our app We ll start with a simple HTML file In index html file lt html lang en gt lt head gt lt meta charset UTF gt lt meta http equiv X UA Compatible content IE edge gt lt meta name viewport content width device width initial scale gt lt title gt PWA Application lt title gt lt link rel stylesheet href css styles css gt lt link href innovaccer design system css dist index css rel stylesheet gt lt link href Sans i i i i i i amp display swap rel stylesheet gt lt meta name theme color content FFEC gt lt head gt lt body class d flex h align items center flex column justify content center gt lt nav class p gt lt a class links href index html gt Home lt a gt lt a class links href pages about html gt About lt a gt lt a class links href pages contact html gt Contact lt a gt lt nav gt lt div gt lt div class bg primary p gt lt h gt My PWA Application lt h gt lt div gt lt div gt lt body gt lt html gt Similarly create the other two pages About amp Contact Web App ManifestThis is a single JSON file which is going to provide information about our app to the browser like name of the applicationhome screen icon for the mobilecolour themestart URLBy providing the above information the browser would know how to display our app properly on a mobile when it s installed onto it By using the Web App Manifest PWAs can be easily installed on a user s device and provide a more native like experience even when accessed through a browser On the root of the project create a file manifest json name My PWA App short name PWA start url index html display standalone background color FFED theme color FFEC orientation portrait primary icons src img icons icon x png type image png sizes x src img icons icon x png type image png sizes x src img icons icon x png type image png sizes x src img icons icon x png type image png sizes x src img icons icon x png type image png sizes x src img icons icon x png type image png sizes x src img icons icon x png type image png sizes x src img icons icon x png type image png sizes x name the name of your app this is going to be shown when you click on the application on the splash screen while the application loads in the mobile short name the name that displays underneath the icon on the home screen when someone installs your application start url the URL of the page that actually opens up when the user taps on the icon when we install it onto the home screen display it specifies the developers preferred display mode for the website By selecting standalone it s not going to show the other browser things like the address bar at the top icons An array of objects and each object represents a different icon Depending on the device we are installing the app on it s going to use a different sized icon Don t forget to include this manifest json file inside your all HTML files like this lt link rel manifest href manifest json gt Now you can all those properties which you have provided inside the browser in the Application Tab Browser will take all the information and when we install this onto our mobile device it can make sure that our app displays properly You can read more about web app manifest here Application ShellNow let s move to the next component of PWA i e Application Shell The app shell is the minimum HTML CSS and javascript that is required to power the user interface of PWAs It represents the static parts of the app that remain consistent across different views or pages This includes components like the header footer navigation menu and other UI elements that are visible on every page By caching the App Shell in the service worker PWAs can load instantly and provide a smooth user experience even in offline or low connectivity scenarios The App Shell provides a consistent UI and navigation experience throughout the app making it feel more like a native application There are more important concepts of PWA like service workers etc which we will cover in the next article Wrap Up That s all for this article Thank you for your time Let s connect to learn and grow together LinkedIn Twitter Instagram 2023-05-16 13:26:46
海外TECH DEV Community Introducing Ostara https://dev.to/krud/introducing-ostara-3o6b Introducing Ostara A previous version of this article introduced Ostara under its previous name Boost the article has been amended to reflect this What is OstaraOstara is a modern tool for managing and monitoring actuator enabled microservices that aims to make the process more user friendly and straightforward One of our main goals with Ostara was to create a tool that just works out of the box without needing anything besides a functioning Actuator API on the other end Ostara allows you to gain insights into the performance and health of your microservices by providing real time monitoring of critical metrics such as CPU and memory usage One of the key benefits of Ostara is its simplicity The tool is designed to be easy to use and requires minimal setup All you need is a running instance of your microservice with Actuator enabled and you can start monitoring and managing it with Ostara Why The first question to ask is why even use Ostara when excellent tools such as Spring Boot Admin already exist As Spring Boot Admin users we had to ask ourselves this question before embarking on the development journey of Ostara For all its greatness one thing Spring Boot Admin that cannot be said about Spring Boot Admin is that it s plug and play or off the shelf To setup Spring Boot Admin we start by having to create Spring project for the server itself In our case which is true for many also meant we have to setup a full CI CD flow complete with Helm charts and Docker images in order to create a full production flow If we needed additional features such as authentication notifications and so on we would need to add them directly to the project All of this despite the infinite versatility it offers because it is essentially a blank slate raises the startup costs of Spring Boot Admin considerably and even more so when you remember that you have to continually maintain this project as with any other project within your code ecosystem either due to security updates to unrelated dependencies you may have needed to add or in order to update Spring to match your main project s But aren t there ready made images of Spring Boot Admin Server A quick Google search will show a few often outdated pre built ones that people in the community have created for different scenarios including this official codecentric spring boot admin Docker image which states This repository contains pre build Docker Images containing basic and hence not production ready builds of Spring Boot Admin Now onto the client in order to register instances on Spring Boot Admin you have to add the spring boot admin starter client dependency to your app and point it at the admin server From personal production experience in mature projects this isn t always a pleasant straightforward experience If your project guards Actuator s endpoints with Spring Security you also have to configure the client to send the server the credentials it will need when registering itself Alternatively if you use Spring Cloud Discovery within your ecosystem you will be able to use that in order to discover instances dependency free but not hassle free as you will again have to add this to your server s project and configure on both ends The second part is performance Spring Boot Admin lacks in a lot of areas when it comes to performance The simplest example is the Thread Dump page where if you stick around long enough without refreshing it will eventually crash your tab With Ostara we aimed for a solution that just works performantly with your existing setups no matter their size or scale and without requiring any prior modifications in your code or environment with the only prerequisite being the presence of Spring Actuator Feature OverviewA robust and user friendly UI for an ever growing list of Actuator endpoints Full list Health monitoring of your applications and their individual instancesNeatly organize your applications and instances into different folders with color coding and unique iconsModify the loggers of your applications and individual instances on the flyEvict 海外TECH Engadget The best Xbox games for 2023 https://www.engadget.com/best-xbox-games-140022399.html?src=rss The best Xbox games for A series of missteps put Microsoft in second place before the Xbox One even came out With the launch of the Xbox Series X and S though Microsoft is in a great position to compete Both are well priced well specced consoles with a huge library of games spanning two decades Microsoft s console strategy is unique Someone with a year old Xbox One has access to an almost identical library of games as the owner of a brand new Xbox Series X That makes it difficult to maintain meaningfully different lists for its various consoles ーat least for now But while “next gen exclusives may be few and far between with PS outselling Xbox One by a reported two to one there are a lot of gamers who simply haven t experienced much of what Microsoft has had to offer since the mid s It s with that frame of mind that we approach this list What games would we recommend to someone picking up an Xbox today ーwhether it s a Series X a Series S One X or One S ーafter an extended break from Microsoft s consoles This list then is a mixture of games exclusive to Microsoft s consoles and cross platform showstoppers that play best on Xbox We ve done our best to explain the benefits Microsoft s systems bring to the table where appropriate Oh and while we understand some may have an aversion to subscription services it s definitely worth considering Game Pass Ultimate which will allow you to play many of the games on this list for a monthly fee DeathloopDeathloop from the studio that brought you the Dishonored series is easy enough to explain You re trapped in a day that repeats itself If you die then you go back to the morning to repeat the day again If you last until the end of the day you still repeat it again Colt must “break the loop by efficiently murdering seven main characters who are inconveniently are never in the same place at the same time It s also stylish accessible and fun While you try to figure out your escape from this time anomaly you ll also be hunted down by Julianna another island resident who like you is able to remember everything that happens in each loop She ll also lock you out of escaping an area and generally interfere with your plans to escape the time loop The online multiplayer is also addictive flipping the roles around You play as Julianna hunting down Colt and foiling his plans for murder As you play through the areas again and again you ll equip yourself with slabs that add supernatural powers as well as more potent weapons and trinkets to embed into both guns and yourself It s through this that you re able to customize your playstyle or equip yourself in the best way to survive Julianna and nail that assassination Each time period and area rewards repeat exploration with secret guns hidden conversations with NPCs and lots of world building lore to discover for yourself Originally a timed PlayStation exclusive Deathloop landed on Xbox in September Overwatch Even though Blizzard has improved the onramp for new players this time around Overwatch still has a steep learning curve Stick with it though and you ll get to indulge in perhaps the best team shooter around Overwatch has a deceptively simple goal ーstand on or near an objective and keep the other team away long enough to win It s much more complex in practice To the untrained eye matches may seem like colorful chaos but Overwatch has a deceptively simple goal ーstand on or near an objective and keep the other team away long enough to win It s much more complex in practice Blizzard reduced the number of players on each team from six to five That along with across the board character tweaks has made gameplay faster paced and more enjoyable compared with the original Overwatch There s a greater emphasis on individual impact but you ll still need to work well with your teammates to secure a victory Now featuring a cast of more than heroes each with distinct abilities and playstyles you ll surely find a few Overwatch characters that you can connect with The first batch of new heroes are all a blast to play There are many great though often fairly expensive new skins to kit them out with too The game looks and sounds terrific too thanks to Blizzard s trademark level of polish At least until you figure out how to play Overwatch you can marvel at how good it looks ControlTake the weird Twin Peaks narrative of Alan Wake smash it together with Quantum Break s frenetic powers and gunplay and you ve got Control Playing as a woman searching for her missing brother you quickly learn there s a thin line between reality and the fantastical It s catnip for anyone who grew up loving The X Files and the supernatural It s also a prime example of a studio working at their creative heights both refining and evolving the open world formula that s dominated games for the past decade Control on the last gen Xbox is a mixed affair with the One S struggling a little but the One X being head and shoulders above the PS Pro when it comes to fidelity and smoothness With the launch of the next gen consoles an Ultimate Edition emerged which brought the ray tracing and higher frame rates that PC gamers enjoyed to console players Although you ll only get those benefits as a next gen owner it also includes all the released DLC and is the edition we recommend buying even if you re not planning to immediately upgrade Halo InfiniteMaster Chief s latest adventure may not make much sense narratively but it sure is fun to play After the middle efforts from Industries over the last decade Halo Infinite manages to breathe new life into Microsoft s flagship franchise while also staying true to elements fans love The main campaign is more open than ever while also giving you a new freedom of movement with the trusty grappling hook And the multiplayer mode is wonderfully addictive though still needs to speed up experience progression with a bevy of maps and game modes to keep things from getting too stale The only thing keeping it from greatness is its baffling and disjointed story but it s not like Xbox fans have many options when it comes to huge exclusives right now Forza Horizon Forza Horizon nbsp deftly walks a fine line by being an extremely deep and complex racing game that almost anyone can just pick up and play The game has hundreds of cars that you can tweak endlessly to fit your driving style and dozens of courses spread all over a gorgeous fictional corner of Mexico If you crank up the difficulty one mistake will sink your entire race and the competition online can be just as fierce But if you re new to racing games Forza Horizon does an excellent job at getting you up and running The introduction to the game quickly gives you a taste at the four main race types you ll come across street racing cross country etc and features like the rewind button mean that you can quickly erase mistakes if you try and take a turn too fast without having to restart your run Quite simply Forza Horizon is a beautiful and fun game that works for just about any skill level It s easy to pick up and play a few races and move on with your day or you can sink hours into it trying to become the best driver you can possibly be Gears Gears tries to be a lot of things and doesn t succeed at them all If you re a Gears of War fan though there s a lot to love here The cover shooter gameplay the series helped pioneer feels great and the campaign while not narratively ambitious is well paced and full of bombastic set pieces to keep you interested As they stand the various multiplayer modes are not great but Gears is worth it for the campaign alone It s also a true graphical showcase among the best looking console games around Microsoft did a great job optimizing for all platforms and use cases with high resolution and ultra high up to fps on series consoles frame rates Nier AutomataIt took more than a while to get here but Nier Automata finally arrived on Xbox One in the summer of And boy was it worth the almost month wait Nier takes the razor sharp combat of a Platinum Games title and puts it in a world crafted by everyone s favorite weirdo Yoko Taro Don t worry you can mostly just run gun and slash your way through the game but as you finish and finish and finish this one you ll find yourself pulled into a truly special narrative one that s never been done before and will probably never be done again It s an unmissable experience and one that feels all the more unique on Xbox which has never had the best levels of support from Japanese developers On Xbox One X and Series X you effectively have the best version of Nier Automata available short of a fan patched PC game On Series S and One S not so much but you do at least get consistent framerates on the Series S and a passable experience on the One S nbsp Ori and the Blind ForestArriving at a time when quot Gears Halo Forza quot seemed to be the beginning middle and end of Microsoft s publishing plans Ori and the Blind Forest was a triumph It s a confident mash of the pixel perfect platforming popularized by Super Meat Boy and the rich unfolding worlds of Metroidvania games You ll die hundreds of times exploring the titular forest unlocking skills that allow you to reach new areas It looks and sounds great ーlike Disney great ーand its story while fairly secondary to the experience is interesting Ori might not do much to push the boundaries of its genres but everything it does it does so right Its sequel Ori and the Will of the Wisps is very much “more of everything so if you like Blind Forest it s well worth checking out too Red Dead Redemption Red Dead Redemption is the kind of game no one but Rockstar the team behind the GTA series could make Only when a studio is this successful can it pour millions of dollars and development hours into a game Rockstar s simulation of a crumbling frontier world is enthralling and serves as a perfect backdrop to an uncharacteristically measured story While the studio s gameplay may not have moved massively forward the writing and characters of RDR will stay with you While Rockstar hasn t deemed fit to properly upgrade Red Dead Redemption for the next gen yet Series X owners will at least benefit from the best last gen Xbox One X experience with the addition of improved loading times The Series S on the other hand gets the One S version but with an improved fps lock and swifter loading Resident Evil VillageResident Evil Village is delightful It s a gothic fairy tale masquerading as a survival horror game and while this represents a fresh vibe for the franchise it s not an unwelcome evolution The characters and enemies in Village are full of life ーeven when they re decidedly undead ーand Capcom has put a delicious twist on the idea of vampires werewolves sea creatures giants and creepy dolls The game retains its horror puzzle and action roots and it has Umbrella Corporation s fingerprints all over it It simply feels like developers had fun with this one and so will you A word of caution before you run to buy it though This game doesn t play great on every Xbox On Series X things are great There s the option to turn on ray tracing with the occasional frame rate issue or to keep it off and have perfect K presentation With the Series S while there is a ray tracing mode it s almost unplayable With ray tracing off the Series S does a decent job though The One X s p mode is also fantastic although its quality mode feels very juddery If you own a base Xbox One or One S though there s really no mode that actually feels enjoyable to play Sekiro Shadows Die TwiceSekiro Shadows Die Twice isn t just another Dark Souls game FromSoftware s samurai adventure is a departure from that well established formula replacing slow weighty combat and gothic despair for stealth grappling hooks and swift swordplay Oh and while it s still a difficult game it s a lot more accessible than Souls games ーyou can even pause it The result of all these changes is something that s still instantly recognizable as a FromSoftware title but it s its own thing and it s very good This is one game that s really not had a lot of love from its developer or publisher as despite the fact next gen consoles should be easily able to run this game at fps the Series S is locked to an inconsistently paced fps while the Series X doesn t quite hold to either With that said it s more than playable Lost JudgementThis is private eye Takayuki Yagami s second adventure a spin off of Sega s popular pulpy and convoluted Yakuza saga He lives in the same Kamurocho area the same yakuza gangs roam the streets and there s the very occasional crossover of side story characters and well weirdos But instead of punching punks in the face in the name of justice or honor which was the style of Yakuza nbsp protagonist Kazuya Kiryu Yagami fights with the power of his lawyer badge drone evidence and…sometimes read often he kicks the bad guys in the face The sequel skates even closer to some sort of serialized TV drama punctuated by fights chases and melodrama For anyone that s played the series before it treads familiar ground but with a more serious realistic story that centers on bullying and suicide problems in Japanese high schools which is tied into myriad plots encompassing the legal system politics and organized crime Yagami has multiple fighting styles to master while there are love interests batting cages mahjong skate parks and more activities to sink even more hours into On the PS Lost Judgment looks great Fights are fluid and the recreated areas in Tokyo and Yokohama are usually full of pedestrians stores and points of interest While Yakuza Like a Dragon takes the franchise in a new turn based more ridiculous direction Lost Judgment retains the brawling playstyle of the Yakuza series with a new hero who has eventually charmed us Xbox Game Pass UltimateWe already mentioned this one but it s difficult to overemphasize how good a deal Game Pass is for Xbox owners For a month you get access to a shifting and growing library of games The company does a good job explaining what games are coming and going in advance so you won t get caught out by a game disappearing from the subscription service just as you re reaching a final boss There are games mentioned in this guide and seven of them are currently available with Game Pass The full library is broad and while Microsoft s cloud service is still just in beta you ll have access to many of the games on your tablet phone or browser through xCloud at no extra fee This article originally appeared on Engadget at 2023-05-16 海外TECH Engadget After two years of updates, the HomePod mini is actually pretty good https://www.engadget.com/after-two-years-of-updates-the-homepod-mini-is-actually-pretty-good-133056756.html?src=rss After two years of updates the HomePod mini is actually pretty goodWhen we first reviewed Apple s HomePod mini in we had some reservations While it was a much better value than the original HomePod it still had some of the same limitations of its bigger sibling Siri wasn t as bright as Alexa or Google Assistant the HomeKit ecosystem was limited and there were no real alternatives to Apple Music for on demand tunes You bought a mini for Apple s tight integration and not much else Fast forward to and it s a different story Apple has significantly expanded the HomePod mini s functionality It now has active temperature and humidity sensors smoke and CO alarm detection access to third party music services however modest and support for the Matter smart home standard With the recent software update the speaker can also make use of a revamped Home architecture that s said to be faster and more reliable The odds are that Apple has addressed at least one of your pet peeves in the past few years The market hasn t stood still however Amazon has improved both Echo speakers and Alexa in the years since and Google s Nest Audio has received upgrades like a guest mode Then there s competition from Apple itself ーnow that the company has introduced a second gen HomePod the smaller model may not be as compelling as before With that in mind we re revisiting the HomePod mini to see if it s still a viable option Smart home upgradesPhoto by Jon Fingas EngadgetAsk HomePod users about their top gripe and they ll probably point to basic reliability It s easy to find complaints of unresponsiveness broken commands and generally buggy behavior that can make it difficult to consistently control a smart home The software and its overhauled Home architecture appear to have addressed these glitches in my month long stint with the HomePod mini Siri is quicker and more reliable as expected and there haven t been any glitches interacting with other smart home gear including an Apple TV K While some users say they still have issues it seems like Apple has ironed out some kinks The most practical upgrades are the unlocked temperature and humidity sensors though ーI m getting far more use out of them than I thought I would My HomePod mini test unit sits in my infant son s nursery and the readings let me check conditions in the room without reaching for the baby monitor It s about as accurate as that monitor too You can use the sensors to automatically toggle smart home devices such as closing blinds when it gets too hot although I didn t have equipment that would benefit from the feature Before you ask Amazon s Echo already has a temperature sensor but it s good to see this functionality spread to other platforms Other improvements are more subtle but still welcome The update added the option of setting up recurring automations using Siri I can turn on my Hue lights every day at dusk if I m so inclined And while there s no Pandora access in Canada it s good to know I can use Deezer as well as radio services like iHeartRadio Radio com and TuneIn Just don t expect Amazon Music ーthat was promised in but hasn t materialized Smoke alarm detection works as promised although I d rather have a connected alarm such as Google s Nest Protect if I was truly worried about fires breaking out while I m away Matter support also makes a difference I ve largely relied on Amazon Echo speakers in my home precisely because the range of HomeKit compatible devices is still small Matter opens the door to devices that were previously off limits including Google s Nest lineup While the list of Matter ready hardware is currently modest it s growing quickly enough that I can comfortably recommend a HomePod mini to someone who wants compatibility with major brand security cameras and thermostats Does the sound quality hold up Photo by Jon Fingas EngadgetThe HomePod mini design hasn t changed since launch apart from a wider choice of colors like my test unit s orange That s not necessarily a bad thing As we explained in the mini punches above its diminutive weight While it s only somewhat larger than the third generation Echo Dot in my nursery and the Google Home Mini in my office it blows them away ーthe sound is comparable to the larger more powerful second gen standard Echo in my living room There s a surprising though not awe inspiring amount of bass detailed highs and distinct instrumentation The mini isn t the loudest smart speaker in its class and I typically set the volume to percent or more if I want to listen from another room However it also maintains the fullness of its sound across volume levels even at the percent I use for lullabies in the nursery While I would rather have the regular HomePod and other louder alternatives for a house party I d be happy to use the mini as an office or bedroom speaker With that said the HomePod mini fares better with some music genres than others A jazz tune like Ahmad Jamal s live take on “Poinciana sounds surprisingly immersive while a treble rich classical work like Ravel s “Daphnis et Chloé Suite No sparkles Mid range rock like Radiohead s “Paranoid Android also plays well However the speaker sometimes strains to handle the mids of dance tunes like Above amp Beyond s “Gratitude and sounds a bit hollow with rap like Run the Jewels “Close Your Eyes Updates like lossless audio support haven t improved matters either The sound is nonetheless enjoyable and holds up well next to my standard Echo While the HomePod isn t as loud it provides more consistent detail The problem as you might guess is that a roughly comparable sound isn t a draw by itself Apple has a size advantage but that s about it And it s safe to say that you re better off spending extra for higher end speakers like the regular HomePod or Sonos Era if you care about fidelity or tricks like the HomePod s support for spatial audio Some things are still brokenPhoto by Jon Fingas EngadgetAs much as Apple has improved the HomePod mini over time certain elements are just as frustrating as they were three years ago For one Spotify support is missing That s not under Apple s control at this stage and we wouldn t expect Spotify to warm up when it s still engaged in an antitrust battle over pricing and app integration Nonetheless it rules out the most popular streaming music service on the planet unless you re willing to use AirPlay And no Siri isn t much brighter than before Most of the updates since launch have revolved around Apple TV support such as playing a movie Find My friend locations and compatibility with the cheaper Apple Music Voice Plan Siri does a solid job with straightforward tasks like playing music or checking the weather but it has neither Alexa s third party skills nor Google Assistant s talent for answering general knowledge questions For that matter the HomePod mini isn t necessarily the best speaker for a nursery or shared bedroom You can adjust Siri s volume or peg it to that of your voice but there s no Alexa style whisper mode that responds in hushed tones If you re not careful you ll inadvertently startle someone by cuing up a playlist ーtrust me I know You can tap your iPhone on the HomePod to silently transfer music still one of Apple s best tricks but that s not much help if you re rocking a child to sleep Support for other platforms remains non existent You still need an iPhone or iPad just to set up a HomePod mini while the absences of Bluetooth audio and a line in jack rule out even basic connectivity with non Apple devices While Matter support improves the range of smart home devices you can use the mini remains a no go if you use Android A better value for the right personPhoto by Jon Fingas EngadgetEven with all those hangups in mind the HomePod mini is a better value now than it was in It s more useful and reliable in a smart home and you aren t as locked into Apple s ecosystem as you were before You ll be pleased with the sound quality for the money especially if you want a smart speaker that doesn t occupy much space on an end table Moreover the HomePod mini may be appealing precisely because it s not part of the Amazon and Google ecosystems My Echo speakers irritate me by peppering Alexa responses and notifications with unwanted pitches ーno I don t want to subscribe to Amazon Music or rate the power cords I bought last month Google isn t as egregious but it frequently offers unwanted tips While the HomePod s functionality is more limited I m tempted to switch just to escape the annoyances of its rivals These days the HomePod mini is also tempting if you re particularly privacy minded I m not too fussed about it myself but it s no secret that Apple s rivals generally collect more data Amazon and Google grab personal profiles and contact information Apple doesn t for instance Both likewise use queries to help target ads and Amazon defaults to collecting voice recordings for service improvements where it s strictly opt in for Apple and Google HomePods still have to gather some data such as IP addresses and device names but I d feel more comfortable with the mini than its alternatives if I wanted to keep info sharing to a minimum Having said this the mini is still best suited to Apple devotees It makes the most sense if you subscribe to Apple Music and the proposition gets better the more Apple hardware you have HomePods just aren t as alluring in mixed platform households You may also want to wait for more Matter compatible devices if you re going to use this speaker as the cornerstone of an elaborate smart home setup This is still a stronger purchase than the high end HomePod for most people You re getting the same environment sensors and voice assistant features and the sound is pleasing if you re either a casual music listener or tend to listen to spoken word content like podcasts and news radio The more expensive model is strictly for buyers who want the best possible audio quality from an Apple speaker or want to try spatial audio without spending on the Sonos Era Versus Amazon and Google it s more complicated We noted in our smart speaker buying guide that the fourth generation Echo and Nest Audio are both louder and punchier than the HomePod mini although they pay for that with larger enclosures and less consistent sound across frequencies They aren t tied to one mobile platform however and they have rich smart home ecosystems even without Matter playing a part Throw in more flexible voice assistants wider hardware variety there s no Apple equivalent to an Echo Dot or Nest Mini and well established ecosystems and they re the safer choices This article originally appeared on Engadget at 2023-05-16 13:30:56
海外TECH Engadget The best microSD cards in 2023 https://www.engadget.com/best-microsd-card-130038282.html?src=rss The best microSD cards in If you want to add storage space to a Nintendo Switch GoPro or Raspberry Pi you need a microSD card But while several cards will be fast enough for most use cases some inexpensive options will perform better than others To help you find a reliable storage booster we recently put a dozen microSD cards through a range of benchmark tests What to look for in a microSD cardCapacityThe first thing to figure out when buying a microSD card is how much space you need Modern cards are usually available in sizes ranging from GB to GB while a handful offer TB models as well TB cards are theoretically possible but still in the prototype stage For most a GB or GB model should be the sweet spot between price and capacity But if you need more room say for stashing a bunch of games on a Steam Deck a GB card could make more sense and often provides a better cost per GB ratio These days you can find a decent GB card for around or less a decent GB card for less than and with sales a decent GB card could be as little as though most cost closer to or There s a starker increase when you go up to TB cards which typically cost around Note that a microSD card s performance may differ depending on what capacity you buy SanDisk says its GB Extreme card delivers sequential write speeds up to MB s for example while the higher capacity models in the same line offer up to MB s When we talk about microSD cards today we usually refer to cards that use the microSDXC eXtended Capacity standard which have a capacity between GB and TB Your device needs to support this for it to work with a microSDXC card This will almost never be an issue these days but some older devices a Nintendo DS for instance are only compatible with microSDHC High Capacity cards which range from GB to GB Read and write speedsMicroSD cards are primarily judged on their read and write speeds which are usually measured in megabytes per second MB s Generally speaking most microSD cards have faster read speeds than write speeds These metrics can then be broken down into sequential and random performance Sequential read and write speeds matter when you re trying to access or save long constant streams of data such as opening a large video or copying a big batch of files from a PC If you want to use a microSD card for media storage this is particularly important Random performance meanwhile is about how quickly a card can read and write small files scattered throughout the device Since random read write speeds are much lower than sequential ones storage device makers tend not to advertise them as loudly But they re important if you use a card with a gaming device or a single board computer like the Raspberry Pi where it often has to rapidly save and access small bits of data in random locations SD AssociationSpeed ratingsIf you look at a microSD card you ll see a buffet of numbers letters and symbols Most of these refer to the card s speed class and performance ratings which are determined by the SD Association A card s Video Speed Class or V rating details its minimum sequential write speed which is especially important when recording video from a camera It ranges from V to V Most of the cards we tested had a V rating so they have a sequential write speed of at least MB s This should be enough to support up to K video at lower bitrates Higher rated V and V cards are usually better for capturing K but they come at a much higher cost The UHS Speed Class or U rating also refers to a card s minimum sequential write speed It comes in two varieties U which mandates a minimum of MB s and U which is rated for MB s The older Speed Class rating overlaps with the other two systems It s signified by a C symbol and goes from Class to Class with the number again indicating minimum sequential write speed This rating is less relevant nowadays but you may still see a “C logo on some cards The Application Performance spec marked by an A symbol is an indicator of random read write speeds This is measured in IOPS or input output operations per second rather than MB s There are two categories here A cards offer a minimum random read speed of IOPS and a minimum random write speed of IOPS while A cards bump those up to IOPS and IOPS respectively Both ratings also guarantee sequential write speeds of at least MB s Most people should look for a card with V U and A ratings It s totally possible to get a solid card without those A U card might be worth it if you just need a cheap option with a high capacity to hold files for example V and V cards are worth a look if you re serious about shooting high resolution photos and video as well But generally speaking cards with the certifications above should provide the best blend of price and performance today It s important to emphasize that these ratings are baselines Many V cards offer significantly higher write speeds than MB s for instance and some A cards can outperform some A models in practice The speeds advertised by manufacturers aren t always percent accurate either Sometimes the card will be slower in real world use other times it may actually be a bit faster UHS bus speedsThe other spec to note is the card s bus interface Most microSD cards available today are UHS I which have a theoretical maximum speed of MB s There are also UHS II cards which have an extra row of pins on the back and can reach up to MB s A newer UHS III standard exists as well but hasn t seen wide adoption just yet These are labeled on the card with a Roman numeral I or II The absolute fastest microSD cards right now are UHS II cards and they re usually the ones with V or V ratings If you shoot lots of K to K video or frequently use burst mode to capture ultra high res photos the performance gains of a good UHS II card can save you time But these are much more expensive than UHS I cards This GB model from ProGrade Digital for example is a relative bargain at You need a device that s compatible with the UHS II interface to see any benefits too and as we were putting this guide together stock for UHS II cards was spotty For now the higher speeds aren t worth the price premium for the vast majority of people so we mostly stuck to UHS I options Kris Naudus EngadgetA note on card readers the Nintendo Switch and Steam DeckWhile the UHS I spec has a theoretical maximum of MB s some UHS I cards can exceed that speed through proprietary extensions You need a compatible card reader and host device to take advantage of that extra performance though If you find a UHS I card advertising speeds higher than MB s this is what s going on You can see these limits in action with a Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck Both of those gaming devices support the UHS I interface and don t go beyond its official speed flattening any sequential gains some cards may have elsewhere The broader takeaway Your microSD card will only be as fast as the slowest link in your chain WarrantyMany microSD cards are designed to be durable with protection from water extreme temperatures X rays and drops Still in case of catastrophe a long warranty is always good to have Many manufacturers offer lifetime limited warranties though we ve noticed that “endurance cards marketed to withstand more hours of writing are usually covered for a much shorter period of time Avoiding counterfeitsThe memory card market has had a particular problem with scammers selling fake products To guard against this only buy from a known brand and a reputable retailer such as Best Buy B amp H Photo or Adorama If you shop at Amazon only buy if the shipper and seller is Amazon com Though a handful of users have reported receiving counterfeits even from Amazon directly in the past Remember If a price seems too good to be true it probably is Be wary of any retailer offering significantly a lower price than others Once you receive a card check its packaging for any irregularities You can run benchmark tests like CrystalDiskMark or BlackMagic Disk Speed Test to verify its speeds aren t drastically lower than what s advertised or possible given its specs You can also use software that s designed to verify the true capacity and performance of your card such as Htestw and FakeFlashTest How we testedWe put microSD cards through a series of tests to verify their sequential and random performance These included benchmarks like CrystalDiskMark BlackMagic Disk Speed Test ATTO Disk Benchmark and AJA System Test as well as a few “real world tests We copied and pasted a small folder of photos about GB in size to and from each card then did the same with a larger GB folder containing multiple file types and subfolders timing the process each time We also checked how each card performed on the Steam Deck downloading games of varying sizes including Stardew Valley Aperture Desk Job Metal Gear Rising Revengeance and Apex Legends nbsp then timing how long it took to launch each game and load save files We used a Kingston USB UHS II reader to test each card on both Windows and macOS Ventura For the former we used an Alienware gaming PC with an Intel Core i F Nvidia GeForce RTX GPU GB of RAM and a TB SSD For the latter we used a inch MacBook Pro with an Apple M Pro chip GB of RAM and a GB SSD To use our card reader on the MacBook we used Apple s USB C Digital AV Multiport Adapter We tested the GB version of each card wherever possible though for a couple of cards the SanDisk Extreme and Samsung Pro Plus we were only able to test their GB models We also reformatted each card before testing with the SD Association s Memory Card Formatter tool Best for most Samsung Pro PlusThe Samsung Pro Plus offered just about the best sequential write performance of the cards we tested around MB s in CrystalDiskMark and topped them all in terms of random read write speeds so it should work well whether you re buying for a camera tablet or gaming handheld Unsurprisingly it has all the requisite ratings U V and A Its sequential read performance isn t quite as quick as some of our alternate picks below but it s not far behind In our large file transfer test for instance it was only four seconds off the fastest models The Pro Plus costs for GB for GB and for GB so it s not the cheapest option available but it s still affordable Samsung also sells the card with a USB reader that ll help it reach its maximum speeds Either way it comes with a year limited warranty If you opt to buy the Pro Plus make sure you get the latest generation model which Samsung launched in April At the moment the company is still selling the prior iteration of the Pro Plus which looks identical but isn t as quick especially when it comes to random read write speeds Look for the model with sequential read speeds rated at MB s and sequential write speeds rated at MB s We tested the GB version of the Pro Plus due to stock issues with the GB model but this shouldn t have a major impact on real world performance as Samsung rates both cards identically Runner up Kingston Canvas Go PlusIf the Samsung Pro Plus is unavailable or you just want to save a few bucks the Kingston Canvas Go Plus is a strong alternative It delivered the highest sequential read speeds of any card we tested across CrystalDiskMark ATTO and the BlackMagic Disk Speed Test just edging out SanDisk s Extreme and Nintendo Switch branded cards It effectively tied with those two cards in our large file transfer test Its sequential write speeds just over MB s on CrystalDiskMark are where it lags behind the Pro Plus but they should still be quick enough for many uses Its random read write speeds were only bested by Samsung s card too so it s still a good option for apps and games This is a U V and A rated card backed by a lifetime limited warranty At for GB and usually less than for GB it s slightly cheaper than the Pro Plus and about as affordable as most cards with this level of performance A GB model is available too though it s often priced in the high to range At that point you should get one of our alternate picks if they re cheaper Best value Samsung Evo SelectThe Samsung Evo Select is a step behind our top picks particularly when it comes to sequential write speeds just under MB s on CrystalDiskMark so it s not an ideal pick for a camera Still it s perfectly usable for many needs and it s regularly available for cheap at both Amazon and Samsung s online store In the past we ve seen its GB GB and GB models fall as low as for and respectively All of those are about on par with the SanDisk Ultra a frequently recommended cheapo card despite the Evo Select having higher V U and A ratings The Evo Select s sequential read speeds were just about in line with its advertised peak of MB s which will be totally fine for many Its random read writes clearly trailed the Pro Plus and Canvas Go Plus but were about on par with pricier cards like the SanDisk Extreme Lexar Professional x and SanDisk microSDXC for Nintendo Switch Like the Pro Plus it s backed by a year warranty If you just want to save a few dollars on a chunk of extra storage it s a good value Another good option SanDisk microSDXC Card for Nintendo SwitchThe SanDisk microSDXC Card for Nintendo Switch is another worthwhile option if you see it available for less than the Pro Plus and Canvas Go Plus Its sequential read speeds were about the same as the Kingston card in our benchmarks but its sequential writes were slightly slower and farther behind the Pro Plus Its random read writes were a step behind according to CrystalDiskMark as well The GB version of this card is usually priced a smidge higher than the Canvas Go Plus but lately the GB version has gone for or so less SanDisk backs the card with a lifetime warranty too Note that we tested the Apex Legends version of the GB card SanDisk also sells a Super Mario model but we can t speak to how that one performs Another good option Lexar Professional xSimilarly the Lexar Professional x is a decent alternative to the Pro Plus if you want to save a little cash It s another V U and A card and like the Pro Plus its sequential write speeds were a bit faster than the Canvas Go Plus and SanDisk Switch card in our benchmarks Those write speeds weren t as quick as Pro Plus and its sequential reads trailed all three cards Random read writes also lagged behind the Pro Plus and Canvas Go Plus and we noticed its speeds peak and dip more noticeably in our file transfer test Still it s not slow The card s GB and GB models are usually available for and respectively The latter in particular might be a good bargain compared to the Pro Plus if you want better write speeds than the Kingston card can offer The x also comes with a lifetime limited warranty Other notable microSD cardsPhoto by Jeff Dunn EngadgetWe didn t use it ourselves but if you re willing to pay for a more powerful UHS II card built for heavy duty video recording the Delkin Devices Power has tested well elsewhere and should deliver significantly faster sequential write speeds than our picks above It s one of the few UHS II cards we could actually find in stock but it costs a ton starting at for just GB The SanDisk Extreme effectively matched the Pro Plus in a few of our sequential write tests and delivered sequential reads about on par with the Canvas Go Plus but that was partly due to us only being able to secure the card s GB model which is higher rated than the GB version Its random performance was well behind the Samsung and Kingston cards too and it typically costs more In general stock for the Extreme has been spottier at most retailers as late If you see it on sale from a reputable seller however it s another quality option The SanDisk Extreme Pro meanwhile is rated for even higher speeds up to MB s sequential reads but it also appears to be unavailable at most trusted retailers as of this writing The PNY Elite X wasn t far off the random read write performance of the Pro Plus and Canvas Go Plus in CrystalDiskMark and it often goes for cheap but it was well behind in our sequential tests This article originally appeared on Engadget at 2023-05-16 13:00:38
