Stop using JavaScript for everything In the world of web development JavaScript has become the go to language for building interactive and dynamic applications It can also be run in the backend it can be used for desktop applications mobile applications multipurpose programming and even Machine learning However the trend of using JavaScript for everything might not always be the best approach The JavaScript CrazeJavaScript s versatility and browser compatibility have made it an indispensable tool for creating modern web applications From front end interactivity to server side logic JavaScript has expanded its reach The thing I hate about JavaScript is that it is somehow being used for stuffs that we shouldn t using like Machine learning with JavaScript The DownsidesWhile JavaScript offers numerous advantages relying on it exclusively can lead to certain downsides Performance OverheadUsing JavaScript for complex tasks can lead to performance bottlenecks especially on resource constrained devices and slower networks Maintenance ComplexityAs projects grow JavaScript codebases can become hard to maintain and debug increasing development time and costs Memory inefficientOne of the major drawbacks of JavaScript is its memory inefficieny ConclusionJavaScript remains a powerful tool but it s essential to use it judiciously I love JavaScript but the enthusiasm to use it everywhere is mindboggling What are your thoughts on the JavaScript first approach Share your opinions in the comments below |

Supavisor: Scaling Postgres to 1 Million Connections |
https://dev.to/supabase/supavisor-scaling-postgres-to-1-million-connections-n70
|
Supavisor Scaling Postgres to Million ConnectionsOne of the most widely discussed shortcomings of Postgres is it s connection system Every Postgres connection has a reasonably high memory footprint and determining the maximum number of connections your database can handle is a bit of an art A common solution is connection pooling Supabase currently offers pgbouncer which is single threaded making it difficult to scale We ve seen some novel ways to scale pgbouncer but we have a few other goals in mind for our platform And so we ve built Supavisor a Postgres connection pooler that can handle millions of connections What is Supavisor Supavisor is a scalable cloud native Postgres connection pooler It has been developed with multi tenancy in mind handling millions of connections without significant overhead or latency Supavisor is built in Elixir in partnership with JoséValim the creator of Elixir and the Dashbit team Supavisor will enable us to build some exciting new features for your Postgres cluster query cachingautomatic read replica load balancingquery blockingand much more Benchmarking million connectionsWe ve benchmarked the characteristics Supavisor exhibits under load before rolling it out to our entire Postgres fleet We tested how we can scale the cluster vertically and horizontally These results have given us confidence that Supavisor is ready SetupWe use a custom load testing application to test the features of the Supabase platform It consists of Terraform scripts for creating a testing environment on AWS k as the load generator We used the k guides for running large scale tests and fine tuning OS to tweak the config for AWS instances Grafana Prometheus for monitoring To simulate concurrent active connections we used AWS EC instances with cores and GB of RAM We ran the tests for up to hours to ensure that the Supavisor can handle load over long periods Establishing a baselineIn the first test we set up a single ARM core Supavisor instance on Ubuntu aarch connected to one database instance We wanted to assess the capacity of a single Supavisor instance We achieved concurrent connections to SupavisorSupavisor was running with a pool of direct connections to the databaseThe system was processing queries per second QPS With this setup the database is the bottleneck QPS was the maximum this instance could handle Increasing QPS would have been possible with a larger instance or read replicas but we wanted to focus on the scalability of Supavisor s connection limit not Postgres s Since Supavisor is built with multi tenancy addition of read replicas is as easy as sending a single post request Supavisor s scaling capabilitiesIn the next step we focused on Supavisor s vertical scaling capabilities by connecting concurrent users with a core Supavisor instance while the single database instance configuration remained the same The system showed no signs of instability or performance degradation QPS remained constant at proving that an increased number of connections doesn t negatively affect Supavisor s overall performance this is generally expected from a BEAM based language like Elixir We also monitored how the load was distributed over Supavisor instance s cores The load is spread evenly between all cores which is great CPU usage is high signaling that the current setup has reached its capacity a single Supavisor instance with core handles around connections With this reference number we moved on to horizontal scaling tests Scaling to connectionsTo examine horizontal scalability we deployed two core Supavisor instances with the first instance connected directly to the database and the other relaying queries through the first In the Supavisor architecture only a single node holds direct connections to each database instance When you add more Postgres databases or read replicas Supavisor spreads the connections to the replicas Every Supavisor instance can accept incoming connections and either execute queries themselves if they directly connected or relay to another node if not This setup successfully handled simultaneous connections to the Supavisor instances QPS or million queries per minute Each connection executed a selectquery once every seconds Within the cluster The directly connected instance was under almost the same load as when handling concurrent clients in a single node mode The relaying instance was extremely over resourced Most cores had little to no workload because relayed connections are more lightweight In a multi tenant setup or when using Read Replicas the load is much more evenly spread because all Supavisor instances connect to comparable numbers of databases and have both direct and relayed connections evenly distributed between each other Supavisor s impact on query durationTo measure the impact on query duration we started with queries per second This allows us to exclude side effects from the database side long query execution times The query used in the experiment was the following select from values one two three as t num letter We found with Supavisor median query duration was less than ms And this includes not only time from client to Supavisor but the whole roundtrip from Client to Supavisor ️from Supavisor to Postgres ️then query execution time on Postgres ️and back to Supavisor ️and to the Client Query DurationMedianmspmspmsWe can see that of queries were completed in less than milliseconds A slightly higher query duration at the beginning of the test can be explained by the dynamic nature of Supavisor to Database connection pool It is being scaled up to the hard limit when more clients establish connections to Supavisor itself and scaled back down when users leave We continued to scale up to QPS to assess the impact on query duration and measured a median of ms Query DurationMedianmspmspmsDatabase experiences much more load and more concurrent queries which leads to higher execution times on the database side And here are some metrics from the database side The scalability can be further enhanced by adding more databases or read replicas if you want to scale a single app to increase QPS or deploying additional Supavisor instances to accommodate tens of millions of concurrent connections Supavisor on Supabase PlatformWe compared our current PgBouncer setup with the new Supavisor setup to assess any impact on query duration Current architectureCurrently every Supabase project comes with its own PgBouncer server running on the same instance as the Postgres database to ensure that the latency is as low as possible But this setup comes with a trade off it uses the same compute resources as your database Supavisor architectureIn the future you connect to a distinct multi tenant Supavisor cluster through a load balancer The Supavisor cluster maintains a connection pool to your database In this case the pooler doesn t consume additional CPU and RAM resources on the database server but it does involve extra network latency We ran queries per second for each configuration this time experimenting with insert query To make the expreriment more realistic we enabled the PostGIS extension to store coordinates insert into positions stud id first name last name title reports to timestamp location email values name Virtual name User name Load Tester Date now st point x y vu name acme corp We observed an additional ms required each query to be executed on the Supavisor architecture compared to PgBouncer architecture Query Duration with SupavisorQuery Duration with PgBouncermedianmsmspmsmspmsmsFig Query Duration with SupavisorFig Query Duration with PgBouncer Getting startedSupavisor has been rolled out to all Supabase projects in all regions Contact support to start using it today and we ll provide connection details We will be exposing a new connection string in project dashboards over the next few weeks You ll be able to use both PgBouncer and Supavisor for a few months in parallel Nothing will change with your PgBouncer setup if you need to switch back Supavisor will be added to the self hosted stack as soon as we have tested it across our database fleet That said we re confident that it s ready for use if you want to try it with your own Postgres database Sequin one of our partners has been using Supavisor for several months With Supavisor we ve been able to ship incredible features that would have been very hard to build otherwise For example our customers can now read from and write to Salesforce and HubSpot via Postgres We achieve this by intercepting queries that route through Supavisor We chose Supavisor because it s scalable multi tenant and written in Elixir We were able to integrate it easily with our own Elixir infrastructure As partners we look forward to helping shape the future of Postgres connection pooling with Supabase Anthony Accomazzo Co founder of Sequin ConclusionSupavisor s vertical and horizontal scaling ability make it the optimal solution for developers who aim to create applications that can effortlessly scale even under extreme workloads avoiding issues such as too many connections and enabling the full power of edge functions and serverless If you are interested in exploring Supavisor s potential or want to implement its scalability in your upcoming project check Docker networkingNetworking allows containers to communiate with each other and the host system Suppose we have Docker containers on the host systembackend and frontend and they want to connect each other and they need to surely interact with the host system To manage and establish the connection between the participants we need docker netwokingWe have two quetions How Docker container will take to hostHow container will have chat How a container can talk to the host OS Whenever you create a container Docker creates a virtual eth docker Without this Docker cannot talk to the host This is called Bridge Networking which is the default in Docker Similar to bridge networks we have different types of networks which we will see soon Till then You can check the networks withdocker network lsWe have two types of network bridge network and host networkBridge NetworkAs explained above the bridge act as an interface between the docker conatiner and host OS Host Networking Containers will directly use the network of the host Which is not prefereedhere when you create a container docker will directly bind your container with the ip address eth of the host Overlay network This is very usefull when you have multiple hosts MacvlanMacvlan networking in Docker enables containers to have their own unique MAC addresses and appear as separate physical devices on the network Containers inside the same bridge network will share the same network subnet so there will be a direct connection between bothIn our case container and container can directly talk with each other Till now we have discussed different types of different networks but we have an underlying issue suppose that when we have two Docker containers that are connected using the bridge network they will have to share the docker bridge which becomes the common path between both the container and host This will make the conatiners not secure For example we have containers backend frontend and payment Here the backend and frontend can be kept in one network but the payment must be in another network to maintain anonymity How do you achieve logical isolation This can be achieved using the bridge networking itself Docker allows you to create custom bridge networks So in our scenario one container can talk to the host with Veth or Docker and the other container will talk using the custom bridge network As you can see in the diagram there is no connection between payment and the frontend and backend therefore payment is secure DEMO Inspect Containerdocker inspect container name Inspect container List Networksdocker network ls Create new networkdocker network create new name new bridge netwok will be created Attach new network to conatinerdocker run d network new name name payment container payment attachh new network to the container However you can at any point of time attach the container to bridge network and enable communicationdocker network connect bridge web Container with the host networkdocker run d name demo host network host image Remove networkdocker network rm testThere are many things to learn about docker network more about hosts overlay etc but for a beginner s experience this much is sufficient If the article helps you leave a like follow or anything You can follow me on LinkedIn GitHub Dev to and hashnode Bye |

Rockstar recruits the team behind the biggest GTA V roleplay communityEven though it s very nearly a decade old Grand Theft Auto V is still one of the biggest games on the planet More than people are playing it on Steam alone at the time of writing and it still makes a major contribution to Rockstar Games owner Take Two s bank balance Roleplaying has been a major contributor to GTA V s enduring popularity with tens of thousands of players using mods to create characters that live work and play with greater freedom in San Andreas and Los Santos Now Rockstar is making moves in that space as Cfx re the team behind the biggest GTA V FiveM and Red Dead Redemption RedM mods and communities has joined the publisher quot Over the past few years we ve watched with excitement as Rockstar s creative community have found new ways to expand the possibilities of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption particularly through the creation of dedicated roleplay servers quot Rockstar wrote in its announcement quot As a way to further support those efforts we recently expanded our policy on mods to officially include those made by the roleplay creative community By partnering with the Cfx re team we will help them find new ways to support this incredible community and improve the services they provide to their developers and players quot The Cfx re crew is jazzed about the move as well quot This is a huge step forward in the growth of our community and an opportunity for us to work with Rockstar Games to advance the FiveM platform and the creative community surrounding it quot the team wrote in a forum post quot While our day to day operations won t have any noticeable changes with Rockstar s support we are going to continue to improve our platform and we are truly excited for what this means for our users community and creators quot As Polygon nbsp notes more than players were using the FiveM on custom servers on Friday morning according to the mod s website The popular NoPixel server runs on FiveM and uses custom scripts to enhance the roleplaying experience Rockstar and Cfx re haven t fully detailed their plans for FiveM and RedM In any case Rockstar is now in a position to do whatever it wants with the mods It will absolutely want to keep supporting GTA Online nbsp and its communities for the foreseeable future but there is the small matter of a new Grand Theft Auto game on the horizon When Grand Theft Auto VI debuts ーperhaps next year ーit could have robust roleplaying features baked in thanks to the help of the Cfx re team As such there s a possibility that Rockstar could take full ownership of the GTA VI roleplaying scene by having it already in the game and restricting mods This is speculation in fairness but the impact of this acquisition on the GTA roleplaying community in the years to come is worth considering This article originally appeared on Engadget at |
