海外TECH	reddit	Use of the word "jap" in England	https://www.reddit.com/r/japan/comments/15xk0yn/use_of_the_word_jap_in_england/	Use of the word quot jap quot in EnglandI apologise in advance if this post upsets anyone For context I m half Japanese on my mother s side I work at a Japanese company in the UK For as long as I can remember the word quot jap quot can cause offense to people of Japanese descent I learned this from my late mother and I ve since held it as true She told me that even though it was a long time ago the term held a lot of hatred and violence against Japanese people When there are the Japanese directors walking around I have heard the term get thrown around a lot more quot The Japs are coming yada yada quot and whatever else they say I ve challenged each person I ve heard say it and to be fair most were unaware and did apologise On the contrary had someone approach and say quot I heard you dont like being called jap quot and proceeded to say it more times This pissed me off quite a bit so I just left Because this happened quite frequently I mentioned it to my manager who was in disbelief that I considered it offensive and used an example that it was used in football as an abbreviation for Japan I thought the abbreviation was JPN I asked him in return what he thought of the derogatory terms for people of a Chinese descent or any other but he didn t entertain that and didn t answer I did ask one of the directors who was aware of the term quot jap quot or quot ジャップ quot but said he has never heard it directly when he s around It s had me thinking am I overreacting to the use of the word or not Sorry if this is out of context for the sub reddit I don t often post and I didn t know where best to take this submitted by u TakyRex to r japan link comments	2023-08-21 21:02:55
