海外TECH DEV Community Communicating your Vision https://dev.to/curious_web_addicts/communicating-your-vision-gfg Communicating your VisionIn the previous article of this series we talked about developing a company vision and we defined three key questions that can guide us in this process Why does the company exist What identifies the success of our work How should we act to ensure success In this article we will focus on another important aspect of being an effective leader communication Communicating your VisionIn order to clearly communicate a vision and inspire the team we can use a simple steps checklist Refer to core valuesUse the power of storytelling Use rhetorical questions Use the Rule of ThreeExpress moral convictionUse inclusive language Repeat Step Refer to core valuesWhen communicating your vision refers to the same fundamental values that guided you in developing that vision Ask yourself What are the values you want to communicate Once you defined this move to next step Step Use the power of storytellingNow that we have a list of core values we want to convey imagine you are on stage as you tell your audience We want to be bold We want to be honest Not really effective right I could almost say boring To be effective you must convey the meaning of the core values in a way that is compelling to your audience This is where storytelling comes in Communication in the form of stories will generate a stronger reaction when compared to a passive list of data It influences not only the mind but the heart as well by engaging emotionally and personally with the listeners A good story is something a person can relate to To create a good story ask yourself What do I want my audience to learn from my story You don t have to use your own personal experience If you relate the story in general terms you can use something you read saw or heard and then share it with your audience If it is a particular story that someone else related then give that person recognition Once you have your story enrich it with anecdotes metaphors and analogies that resonate with your audience Step Use rhetorical questionsThis is a nice article isn t it Rhetorical questions can be used as an effective communication tool during a speech They are especially useful in engaging the audience and persuading them to agree with you To engage the audience use a rhetorical question that force them to think about an answer For example to convey a message in the form of Doing X can be useful for Y a better approach could be Why doing X can be beneficial for Y To persuade the audience use a rhetorical question where the answer is clearly yes Once the audience begins agreeing with you they are more likely to continue agreeing That was the purpose of my question at the begging of this paragraph You can also try to predict your audience questions and then use them as rhetorical questions in your speech For example you can say something like As a team person astronaut you may think what should I do for solving Step Use the Rule of ThreeIf you paid attention during the most popular speeches there is an high change you heard the speaker saying something like Here are the three things I m going to tell you The Rule of Three is a very powerful technique that allows people to remember the message you are trying to convey  In fact it s pretty popular in slogans and catchphrases Liberté égalité fraternité Ideas that are presented in threes seem to be more easier to remember more persuasive and enjoyable So next time you need to deliver an important message divide it into three parts Step Express moral convictionMoral conviction is the subjective belief that something is fundamentally right or wrong We can take advantage of your audience s moral beliefs by reminding them Why do we ultimately do what we do Why does it matter  Who are we benefiting through our work The more you can clearly communicate to your audience the moral reasons behind your vision the more they will be willing to embrace it Step Use inclusive languageIf you are trying to engage your audience you want definitively avoid using words like I want I see I expect Instead  what you should do is using the so called inclusive language we want we will accomplish our team Inclusive language is respectful and promotes the acceptance and value of all people When used is shows a positive effects on people and make them feel included valued empowered and part of the vision that you ultimately are trying to create  Step Repeat And finally don t forget to repeat the key points of your vision Repetition is important because Helps to emphasize a point and make a speech easier to follow It leverage the power of persuasion In fact studies show that repetition of a phrase can convince people of its truth Is an opportunity to reinforce the message that you are trying to convey Don t use Repetition more than times A moderate to low levels of repetition can serve as a great persuasive tactic but when it is used more than that it serves the opposite purpose Studies prove that the audience seems to disagree with arguments when repetition is used excessively So repeat your vision multiple times any time you have the opportunity to communicate it to your team Follow this checklist if you want to improve your communication skills but don t forget that also body language plays an important role in influencing your audience Therefore in the next article of the series we will talk about the importance of non verbals communication Stay 海外TECH DEV Community Golang Tutorial for Beginners [FREE Course] 🎉 https://dev.to/techworld_with_nana/golang-tutorial-for-beginners-free-course-330 Golang Tutorial for Beginners FREE Course In this full Golang course you will learn about one of the youngest programming languages that is becoming more and more popular in the cloud engineering world You will learn everything you need to get started with Go and start using it in your projects What is Go Go is a programming language which was developed at Google in and open sourced in So it s a pretty young language The language is called Go However it s also commonly known as Golang This is because the website was originally golang orgNow whenever you hear about a new programming language the first question you probably have is Why do we need yet another programming language What is the purpose of it or how is it better or different from other already existing languages So before diving into the syntax let s see what was the motivation behind creating the Go language Why Go was developed How it s different from other programming languages Infrastructure changedWell the infrastructure where the applications were deployed changed a lot in the last few years Multi core processors became common and also using cloud infrastructure with hundreds or thousands of servers with multiple processors to deploy applications became pretty universalSo infrastructure became much more scalable dynamic and had more capacity However most languages couldn t help in writing applications that would take advantage of these infrastructure improvements So basically you had applications that would just execute one task at a time in order But with infrastructure improvements it was possible to nowwrite applications that would execute tasks in parallel do multiple things at once This way making the application faster and more user friendly Multi Threading Do multiple things at onceA simple example is if you are using Google Drive you may be uploading or downloading files and folders but you can keep navigating back and forth in the UI So downloading uploading and navigating the UI all happen in parallel So the application allows you to do multiple things at once without affecting any other task And this is a concept of multi threading So each thread is basically processing one task and you can have many of them running in parallel and this makes applications fast but may also cause some issues ChallengesFor example on Google Docs many users can work on the same document at the same time So when you have two users changing and adding stuff at the same time to the same document this should work smoothly without one user overriding all the changes that another user is making Another example where such issues may happen when things are processed in parallel is a booking system for buying tickets or booking a hotel etc Let s say again two users are trying to book the last remaining ticket at the same time Of course this should work in a way that no double booking happens And this concept is called concurrency and needs to be handled by developers in code So they must write code that prevents any conflicts between the tasks when multiple tasks are running in parallel and updating the same data Language Concurrency SupportMany languages do have features for implementing such applications however the code can get pretty complex andhandling and preventing the concurrency issues can be pretty hard And with complexity there is always a higher risk of human errors and that s where the main purpose and difference of Go comes into the picture So Go was designed exactly for that purpose to make writing multi threaded concurrent applications that take advantage of the new performance infrastructure much easier We will learn about this in more detail at the end of the course when we use goroutines Main Use Case of GoSo logically enough the main use case of Go or what it s best used for is writing applications that need to be very performant and will run on the modern scaled and distributed infrastructure with hundreds and thousands of servers typically on a cloud platform Go is used on the server side or the backend of the applications and these types of applications can range from microservices and web applications to database services And so in fact many cloud technologies or technologies that run on modern cloud environments are actually written in Go like Docker Hashicorp Vault Kubernetes CockroachDB and so on Characterstics of Go Language Compiled LanguageGo is a compiled language and it compiles actually very quickly into a single binary You can deploy and run it on different platforms in a consistent way so no matter which operating system or which environment you re using you can take that same binary and basically use it across different platforms Combine Ease of Programming with Efficiency and SafetyFor developing Go they wanted to take the simplicity of syntax of a more high level language like Python and the speed and efficiency of a lower level language like C So you will see the combination of these things in Go Language features left out on purpose for simplicity The goal was that the code should be easy to maintain over time The simple syntax makes your code very maintainable easy to read and extend Go applications can be built very fast they are also very fast in startup and also when they re running Go is very resource efficient which means it uses few resources or it requires fewer resources like CPU and RAM to run Considering all these benefits of simplicity and speed and so on Go is also becoming more and more popular for writing simple automation applications and CLI applications for DevOps and SRE tasks as well So now that we know why Go was created and what differentiates it from other languages let s jump right into learning the core concepts and syntax of Go Learn Syntax and Concepts while writing a simple application ‍In the tutorial we re going to write a very simple ticket booking application to learn the basics of Go So instead of learning the concepts and syntax of Go with isolated examples 海外TECH DEV Community Beautiful drag and drop interactions with react hooks https://dev.to/griffadev/beautiful-drag-and-drop-interactions-with-react-hooks-4obo Beautiful drag and drop interactions with react hooksIn this article we ll explore how you could build a drag and drop sortable table using dnd kit and react table When looking for drag and drop libraries in React there are a lot of options some of the popular ones are react sortable hoc considered deprecated in favour of dnd kit react beautiful dndreact dnddnd kit which we re going to explore today Many of the libraries out there are great but some come with some large downsides namely Are intended for specific use cases or are too restrictive Have a large dependency tree for example some bundle in redux Have inconsistent browser support One common thing also brought up when looking at these libraries is those that opt to use the platform more by utilising the HTML drag and drop APIs and those that deliberately choose to not use it to overcome browser inconsistencies and help improve support for a variety of inputs such as touch mouse and keyboard As part of this investigation I seriously considered react beautiful dnd whilst it has great support and demos I hit a few stumbling blocks along to way It s footprint was also a hard sell to add into the application for a single use case I also encountered this issue whilst I was investigating a different use case where I wanted horizontal and vertical re ordering in a grid After trying out some other libraries I eventually settled on dnd kit which I have to say is absolutely fantastic It is technically still in beta but despite this its documentation is quite mature On the docs site it says the following dnd kit is currently in beta Issues and bugs should be expected for early releases The core concepts are stable but some of the APIs may change in the future So why is this library great It is a lightweight hooks based utility driven library which gives you helpful primitives and allows you to opt in for additional features therefore making the library only as large as your use case requires it be depending on what you need The easiest way to get started I think is to work through some of the code in some of their code sandbox demos I m personally a big fan of the sortable image grid example try breaking down the code to see how things work The first step to using dnd kit is to install the packages you need The library is separated into small micro libraries which each provide additional utilities The minimum you will require is the package dnd kit core KB gzipped Some other useful packages with dnd kit provides dnd kit sortable building blocks to build sortable interfaces KB gzipped dnd kit utilities dnd kit utilities to help with integration KB gzipped dnd kit modifiers modifiers to change behavior of drag and drop for example restricting the drag and drop movement to vertical or horizontal KB gzipped dnd kit accessibility Hooks to assist with accessibility for example screen reader announcements B gzipped Webpack problemsNote in my use I found that webpack had some issues de duplicating dnd kit core which is used inside of dnd kit sortable Aside from adding to bloat if this dependency is not de duplicated the DndContext provided by dnd kit will not work If you run into this you can force it use the same copy of the core library using an alias in your webpack config js resolve alias without this webpack dupes the dependencies when other dnd kit libs use it which breaks context dnd kit core path resolve dirname node modules dnd kit core Learning dnd kitThe best way that I can recommend to understand the library before we get to the example using react table is to take a look at the example I mentioned earlier sortable image grid example One thing to highlight that is important and quite cool about the library is its DragOverlay component which you can use to render a custom react component to visualise your dragged item differently when it is being dragged for example adding a drop shadow which you ll notice in my sortable table example a little later It also offers you the opportunity to change how the original rendered item is rendered when it is being dragged by using the isDragging property from useSortable or useDraggable for example change it s opacity or color to help indicate the drop area to the user this is also shown in my up coming example If you prefer to learn through videos whilst learning the API I watched some of this video before getting my hands stuck into the code What could be better The library has some really fantastic examples of how to use it on its storybook however they do suffer from the classic problem that storybook often presents they are great as showcases but not very good at demonstrations of how to adapt the example to use the code for yourself By that I mean it s very hard to find and understand the code written and often suffers from the problem of too much code re use for demos although if i m honest I think this is a problem with Storybook not the library itself For example it s really hard to un pick what the code in the example is doing you end up having to search through github and reverse engineer complex examples and across multiple files for example The other thing that makes me sad is that this great library is locked into the React ecosystem but I must admit the ergonomics of using custom hooks here is quite nice Using react tablereact table is another lightweight and customisable react library it allows users to use utilities and hooks to build up tables for their UIs This description may sounds quite similar to what I described before about dnd kit where you can use a series of utilities and hooks to implement drag and drop It is for this reason thatreact table and dnd kit fit together really nicely To help demonstrate this I took the basic example of react table from their examples here and then added in drag and drop support let s have a look how Hooking it upIn order to add support there are roughly these steps Install the dnd kit packages dnd kit core dnd kit modifiers dnd kit sortable dnd kit utilities Wrap the table in DndContext and SortableContext Provide an array of string item ids to SortableContext to allow items to be sorted Implement drag event handlers for re ordering items in the array Render a row using the useSortable hook passing in the id of the row Render a drag handle button component Render the CSS transform of the row when dragging Rendering the DragOverlay for a custom view of the row when dragging When a row is being dragged change it s background color and hide the data using the isDragging property to act as a slot for the user to drop into Here is an implementation of how you could go about doing drag and drop re orderable rows with dnd kit and react table This example isn t really focused on making it look pretty it needs lots of styling to make it more production ready but hopefully you get the idea One really important thing that is missing in the example is custom screen reader messages for accessibility you will want to do this to help make sure that your application is inclusive of everybody There is a great example on the dnd kit accessibility page I m excited to explore difference uses for this library once you get the hang of it it s really powerful Thank you for reading If you want to read more of my work please follow me on Twitter griffadev or get me a coffee if you feel like it 2021-12-20 15:09:45
