How to Write an Effective Technical Résumé |
https://dev.to/balapriya/how-to-write-an-effective-technical-resume-36lc
|
How to Write an Effective Technical RésuméGetting your résuméwriting right is an important step in your developer journey Have you ever been a part of the job search processーbe it an internship or a full time opportunityーas a student or a new grad If yes you already know getting past the résuméscreening step and landing that interview call can often be harder than the actual interview Over the next few minutes you ll get to know some actionable tips for résuméwriting that you could use to revamp your résumé This post is inspired by Jessie Newman s webinar for WWCode NYC chapter Let s get started What goes on a résumé Let s start with this question What are companies and hiring managers looking for Well they re looking for candidates who can improve the company s products with their technical expertise be enjoyable to work with andcan contribute positively to the company s culture and growth Even if the recruiter skims through your résuméfor less than a minute you should stand out as a prospective candidate yes For this to happen the content on your résuméshould be Recent Always present information in reverse chronological orderーstarting with the most recent experience first Relevant to the role that you re applying to Clear even to a reader who has no context Typically your résuméshould only be about a page long And that s all you ve got to make an impression on the reviewer As they say You re much more than a one page résuméーbut your résuméshould not be more than one page Format of a résuméThere s no one recommended format to draft your résumé However the following sections should typically be present Name and Contact info Objective optional Education Technical Experience Skills Leadership VolunteeringLet s now visit each of these sections and see how you can best structure each of them Name and contact infoInclude your name your email address links to your portfolio GitHub Be sure to check if your email address is professional enough Include social media handlesーlike LinkedInーonly if you ve updated them Objective optional Include the objective section only if you aim at providing some context to the reviewer Every line should tell the recruiter something that they don t already know For example if you re a CS major applying to a software engineering role your objective isn t going to provide any context to the recruiter On the other hand suppose you re a professional accountant who s looking to break into software development Then the objective tells the recruiter upfront that you re trying to switch careersーand they won t look for a CS degree or developer experience as they skim through your résumé EducationAlways cite details of your educationーstarting from your highest qualification first If you re a Master s student only mention details of your Master s and undergraduate degree Some companies do have a certain cut off GPA so be sure to include your GPA Some people do include Relevant Coursework subsection in their Education tab However you should use it only if needed Being a CS major doing courses in algorithm design and analysis and operating systems isn t any interesting to the reviewer If you re from a non CS stream but have supplemented your coursework with courses from the CS bucketーyou may include them in the Relevant Coursework section Technical ExperienceThis section should account for nearly of your résumé and should include Relevant work experience andProjects We ll talk about this in greater detail in the next section SkillsYou should always organize your skills by categoryーordered by proficiency Here s an example Languages Python JavaScriptLibraries NumPy pandas scikit learnTools GitYou should always remember to demonstrate your skills in the other sections For example if Python is the language that you re most proficient inーyour projects should be indicative of your proficiency Leadership VolunteeringIf you ve been volunteering involved in open source communities mentoring and the like you may include them in this section Ensure that you re communicating your interests and impact clearly and keep this section short and towards the end of your résumé How to describe your technical experienceThis section is the most crucial section in your résuméーbe sure to draft this section carefully Here are a few suggestions on how you should explain your experience and projects Do not list down your job responsibilities Write what you accomplished Do not tell what you learned Instead explain what you built with that knowledge Do not use weak language Avoid phrases like Helped build worked as part of the team helped implementUse strong language that s impactful Say Built Worked on ImplementedDo not be vague when specifying impact worked on speeding up the inference pipeline gt not quantifying impactQuantify impact wherever possibleーtalk numbers worked on speeding up the inference pipeline by by reducing the inference time to ms gt quantifying impactDo not include many projects without explaining each of them Explain your projects clearly in detailーprioritize quality over quantity Be sure to specify the programming language and tech stacks used Built a using JavaScript React Used Python to code a process scheduler Never leave the recruiter guessing why the project is interesting relevant Explain clearly Now that you know how to draft all major sections in your résumé let s list down a few concluding points Points to rememberHave a résuméfor every role that you d be applying to If you re interested in both software engineering and data analytics be sure to draft a dedicated résuméfor each of these roles Don t be terse in explaining your projectsーincluding portfolio links doesn t suffice The recruiter may not have time to look at your portfolio So your résuméshould do the talking for you Do not use fuzzy language just to make your projects sound look cool and complicated Prefer using simple and clear language insteadーjust the way you d explain to your friends And you ve reached the end of this post on best practices in résuméwriting ConclusionThanks for reading all the way up to here Hope you found this post helpful If you know someone who d find this useful do share with them as well If you re currently looking for opportunities I wish you loads of luck in your endeavors |

Root to Linux: Search Files with Grep |
https://dev.to/coffeecraftcode/root-to-linux-search-files-with-grep-516m
|
Root to Linux Search Files with Grep IntroductionGrep is a commonly used command in Linux or Unix to search through or more files for a pattern or word Fun fact grep is short for Global regular expression print g re p It was a command used in a simple Unix text editor called ed pronounced ee dee It would print all the lines matching a certain pattern There are many ways to use the grep command In this tutorial you will use the grep command to search within files and directories and print file types that contain a certain string and more PrerequisitesYou can use a Linux shell or any Unix terminal like the one found on MacOS If you do not have a Linux distro set up you can use an online command shell to practice these commands For this tutorial I used the terminal found on MacOS Create a directory on your computer called book and add text files named story txt and poem txt We will use these files throughout the tutorial If you would like to practice the Linux commands to create a directory files and add text please see Part and of my Hands on Commands tutorial Inside the story txt file add this text A Cat HaikuIn the morningYou sleep despite my meowI stand on your faceInside the poem txt file add this text A Cat PoemMeow meow meowMeow meow meow meowMeow meowExample Searching Within a FileOne way to use the grep command is to search for a word in a specific file In this section you will use the grep command to search for the word cat in the story txt file In your terminal navigate to your book directory with the cd command then type grep cat story txtNothing is returned This command looks in the story txt file for a pattern that matches cat You will see in the terminal that it does not return anything There is a word cat in the story txt file but it is capitalized The grep command is case sensitive To return the line in the text file that matches the pattern cat you could type grep Cat story txtYet you may not know the case of a pattern you are looking for in a file To search for a word or pattern that is case insensitive you can use the i flag The i flag is shorthand for ingnore case grep i cat story txtThe output should now return the correct line that contains the pattern Output A Cat Haiku Searching RecursivelyWhen you want to search through multiple files or you are unsure what file contains a pattern you can search recursively through a directory with grep and the r flag The r flag is shorthand for recursiveIn this example we will search for the word meow in the book directory The command will use grep the r flag the pattern string you want to search for and the path of the directory to search in In your terminal type grep r meow Users cmgorton Desktop bookOutput Users cmgorton Desktop book poem txt Meow meow meow Users cmgorton Desktop book poem txt Meow meow meow meow Users cmgorton Desktop book poem txt Meow meow Users cmgorton Desktop book story txt You sleep despite my meowYou can see that the command returned every line that matched the pattern in both the poem and story text file Invert search with v FlagBefore we used grep to find all the successful matches of a word in a file You can use the v flag along with grep to invert the search The v flag is shorthand for invert match This means the search will return all non matching lines in a file the pattern you are searching for In this example we will look for all the lines that do not match the word meow in the poem txt file While in the book directory type grep v meow poem txtOutput A Cat PoemYou can now try to do the same inverted search in the story txt file and see what the results would be Search for Specific File TypesWhen we searched through the previous files we knew that they contained the word meow However if you were unsure which files contained the word you could search for a specific file type with the l flag The l flag is shorthand for files with matches It will search only the names of files containing selected lines For this example you will search through the file type txt to see which files contain the word meow Note This command will search through all files in the current working directory Navigate to the book directory Type bashgrep l meow txtOutput bashpoem txtstory txtNote The in Linux stands for zero or more characters In the example it looks for all files with the txt characters ConclusionIn this tutorial you explored a few of the ways to use grep to search through files and directories for a pattern There are a lot of other flags you can use with grep You can also use pipes to pipe the output of a command through grep to filter out information To see all of the options you can use with grep type man grep in your terminal This will list the General Commands Manual for grep If you would like to see some of these commands as visual content check out my post where I share my GoodNotes Christina Gorton coffeecraftcode Today I have been learning more about the grep command I will write a new blog post sometime this week but until then enjoy my horrible handwriting on the iPad with these notes on some of the ways to use grep PM Dec |

AMD x s Ryzen mobile CPUs have RDNA graphics for p gamingAMD cemented itself as a serious competitor to Intel s modern Core lineup with its Ryzen CPUs and proved it could also offer much more than the Pentium maker with its Ryzen Zen chips So what s next Today at CES AMD is introducing its Ryzen mobile CPUs which are built on a nm Zen process and sport a significant upgrade RDNA graphics The company claims these new chips will be able to handle most AAA games in p with gaming performance more than twice as fast as the previous generation s Radeon graphics You can also expect more than just the usual speed upgrade AMD claims its Zen core can achieve better deep sleeping states to save juice and it includes better adaptive power management features You can expect the Ryzen chips to consume around percent less energy while video conferencing Even better AMD says they ll offer up to hours of movie playback On the security side Ryzen is the first platform to integrate Microsoft s new Pluton security chip Overall the Ryzen mobile chips will be around percent faster than Ryzen hardware when it comes to single threaded tasks and it ll be up to percent faster for multithreaded work The new processor family will be spearheaded by the core thread Ryzen HX which can reach up to GHz clock speeds Given that this is an entirely new CPU platform it also packs in other upgrades like faster DDR RAM which AMD says will dramatically improve performance of the integrated GPU alongside Wi Fi E integration and better support for PCIe and USB devices nbsp AMDFor most shoppers we d wager the integrated RDNA graphics will be the biggest draw for many systems Just a few years ago you d need a dedicated GPU to handle decent p gaming Being able to tackle that with onboard graphics is a major accomplishment for AMD The RDNA graphics also supports the company s FreeSync technology to smooth out gameplay as well as Dynamic HDR displays AMD claims it ll also be around percent faster than Intel s Xe graphics on its th generation CPUs AMD isn t saying much about its Ryzen U series chips which are meant for ultraportables but they ll likely benefit from many of the platform s upgrades The fastest U series chip the Ryzen U will offer eight cores and speeds up to GHz nbsp Follow all of the latest news from CES right here |

Sony x s Quantum Dot OLED TVs can tweak quality settings using a cameraSony thinks it knows how to counter the latest OLED and mini LED TVs from its rivals add a dash of intelligence Its A series K OLED TVs plus its Z K and X series K mini LED and basic LCD models can use a new Bravia Cam the bump shown at top for video chat gesture control and even optimizing the picture and sound quality They can tweak the brightness voice emphasis and sound balance based on your viewing distance and direction You can also have the picture dim when you leave the room or display a warning when your kids get too close to the screen The camera is bundled with the flagship AK and ZK models and is optional for Sony s other sets You ll need a firmware update to unlock more than video chat but the company hasn t said when that might arrive And yes Sony is aware of privacy concerns There s a hardware switch to disable the camera and neither the camera nor the TV will store private data You can delete any positional data through the TV menu SonyThe new TVs improve image and sound quality whether or not the camera is present The AK uses a new Quantum Dot OLED panel to reproduce a larger color range at wider viewing angles while the ZK and XK have smarter backlighting that reduces mini LED s characteristic light blooming without lowering brightness A Netflix Adaptive Calibrated Mode adjusts output based on ambient light while Bravia Core Calibrated Mode alters quality to match a director s quot original vision quot And yes there s tight integration with other Sony products ーthey can harmonize with higher end soundbars and speakers the built in speakers are also richer while PlayStation owners can take advantage of both automatic picture mode switching as well as auto HDR tone mapping Other improvements include a switch to the unified media centric Google TV interface and smaller simpler remotes that add backlighting and a find my remote feature AK uses also have a stand that can sit at the front or back to suit your viewing environment Sony won t provide pricing and ship dates until the spring but it s using a familiar size strategy The ZK is unsurprisingly limited to K friendly and inch sizes while the AK sits in the sweet spot with and inch variants The AK is built for gamers desks and dorm rooms with and inch sizes and an optional high position stand while the entry AK courts the mainstream with and inch panels The XK comes in and inch flavors while the full array LED lit XK comes in and inch versions The XK and XK have just direct LED backlighting but are available in a wide range of sizes from inches through to inches |

Sony is bringing degree sound mapping to its latest soundbarsWhen Sony debuted its premium home theater gear for the company s pricey HT A speaker set had a key feature that its soundbars didn t It s called Spatial Sound Mapping and it creates quot phantom speakers quot to help the actual speakers produce room filling sound Today at CES Sony announced that it will offer an upgrade to both the HT A and HT A soundbars that adds the degree audio mapping later this spring nbsp Spatial Sound Mapping first uses a combination of Sound Field Optimization tech and built in microphones to measure the height and position of both a soundbar and rear speakers Once that s done the setup creates virtual speakers by positioning sound waves based on the collected location information Sony says the result is a quot wide spatial sound field quot capable of filling a room and it promises that everyone will get quot the same sound experience quot no matter where they re sitting The company also reminded us that an Acoustic Center Sync feature on Bravia XR TVs will work with the sound mapping to become a center speaker that enhances dialogue Both the A and A already support Sony s Reality Audio for more immersive music listening nbsp SonyTo help you make the most out of the soundbars new ability Sony is debuting a new set of wireless rear speakers Unlike most rear satellites that connect wirelessly but rely on a cord for power the new SA RS speakers are totally wireless and can be charged out of sight The company says you can expect up to hours of use when they re fully charged and minutes will give you minutes of play time if you forget to replenish the batteries They also feature up firing speakers wide directional woofers dome tweeters and dual passive radiators for a more robust soundstage and better clarity The SA RS can run Sony s Sound Field Optimization with the press of a button so they re easily calibrated with your soundbar each time you reposition them Lastly the cylindrical speakers have a flat back side so they ll sit nicely against a wall nbsp You ll need a set of rear speakers to employ the forthcoming Spatial Sound Mapping upgrade on the aforementioned soundbars ーhence the new model If you can live without all the bells and whistles of the SA RS the SA RSS is also compatible They re a plain ol set of two way rear satellite speakers in comparison but they ll save you some money over the upcoming model at And based on my experience they should get the job done just fine nbsp The new SA RS wireless rear speakers will be available this spring for That s more than the SA RSS that debuted alongside the HT A last year nbsp Follow all of the latest news from CES right here |
