4 Misconceptions about Biometrics |
https://dev.to/passage/4-misconceptions-about-biometrics-41p3
|
Misconceptions about BiometricsWhen you think of biometrics you might think of something out of a spy movie where the vault needs a fingerprint or eye scan to open and wonder how realistic that really is Or maybe you wonder about the privacy implications of using your face or fingerprint to authenticate to websites These are all valid things to be curious about especially since logging into websites with your face or fingerprint is so different from the passwords we use today The reality is that device native biometrics like Apple s Face ID the Android fingerprint reader or Windows Hello are not some future sci fi thing you can use them to log into websites right now and they provide great security and privacy features As this new technology starts to take the place of passwords let s clear up a few common misconceptions about this new form of authentication MISCONCEPTION Your fingerprint or face data is not private and could be stolen and used to impersonate you One of the greatest advantages to using device native biometrics for authentication is that none of your biometric information is ever sent to or stored by the website it s being used on That is a huge win for privacy and security When you log in to a website using your device biometrics the website will generate a cryptographic challenge that is sent to your device Your browser then interfaces with the fingerprint reader or face recognition components of your phone or laptop to sign the challenge Passage verifies that the challenge is correctly signed before allowing you to log into a website When your phone is prompting you for your face or fingerprint you are unlocking the secure part of your phone that enables your device to sign the challenge but none of that data is ever sent to any website including Passage This is great for your privacy as a user but it also has other security benefits By not storing authentication materials on the website there is no risk of big “password dump style breach Passage does not hold hashes or anything else that can be used to log into your account The only thing that can log in to your account is YOUR biometric on YOUR device As a bonus biometric credentials are scoped to a specific domain or website which means that your credentials for example com will never work for evil example com This completely eliminates a common category of attack called phishing MISCONCEPTION This isn t any different than a password manager Password managers like LastPass or Password are a popular way for users to keep track of a large number of unique complex passwords These tools work by having a single password that unlocks access to passwords for each website Mobile devices often have password managers built into them that leverage device biometrics For example on an iPhone the Apple Keychain will save your passwords for all of the websites you visit and let you unlock those passwords using your Face or Touch ID Companies and developers cannot build those capabilities into their websites directly to get the user experience and security benefits for all of their users Passage enables any web application to add a similar experience one that provides the ease of Apple Keychain for users across all platforms without the need to worry about passwords and all the support needs that come with them password recovery account resets etc MISCONCEPTION Face ID Windows Hello and other platform biometrics are only secure enough to be a second factor of authentication with a password Traditionally devices have been used in tandem with passwords as a second factor of authentication For example you might receive a one time code via text or use an authenticator app that is installed on your phone While this form of MFA does improve security it also adds an additional layer of difficulty to the end user experience With Passage you can get the same number of login factors in a more efficient and user friendly way When you register for an account on a new website you would enter your email then be immediately prompted to register the platform biometric on your device With just that one simple step you are providing two factors of authentication the ownership of the device you are onand your ability to authenticate your biometric on that device via Face ID etc If someone else has your device they would still be unable to log into your account Similarly if they compelled you to present your biometric on a different device it would also not work MISCONCEPTION You won t be able to log in on devices without a device s biometrics This is a common critique of a device based authentication method and it s not wrong The protocols that Face ID Windows Hello and other biometrics are built on are inherently tied to the device you are on Passage is built to eliminate this issue by coordinating all of your different devices and providing you with the most secure login solution no matter where you are Practically speaking if your device has biometrics Passage will prompt you to use it If it does not Passage will send a magic link to your email or phone number You can click this link on any device and still be logged in on the original device you were trying to log in on This allows you to always log in between different devices while optimizing for the convenience and security of device biometrics At Passage we believe device biometrics are the future of how we will authenticate on the internet We are excited to share this amazing technology with the world and we believe that overcoming the misconceptions about the technology is an important step in moving the internet forward What other questions do you have about biometrics and passwordless authentication Ask us in First steps in semantic versioning |
https://dev.to/kommitters/first-steps-in-semantic-versioning-pa7
|
First steps in semantic versioning Relevant conceptsCommits They re snapshots of your entire repository at specific times You should make new commits often based on logical units of change Over time commits should tell a story of the history of your repository and how it came to be the way that it currently is The commits also includes a lot of metadata in addition to the contents and message like the author timestamp and more Tags They basically serve as a signed branch that does not permute i e it always remains unchanged It is simply an arbitrary string that points to a specific commit A tag it s like a name that you can use to mark a specific point in the history of a repository Releases They re deployable software iterations you can package and make available for a wider audience to download and use Releases are based on Git tags which mark a specific point in your repository s history A tag date may be different than a release date since they can be created at different times Pull Request They let you tell others about changes you ve pushed to a branch in a repository on GitHub Once a pull request is opened you can discuss and review the potential changes with collaborators and add follow up commits before your changes are merged into the base branch Note The present article will be limited to explaining the meaning usefulness and functioning of semantic versioning the concepts of tag and release will be explained lightly since they are not the current focus they constitute the step that should be followed to apply semantic versioning Let s get started You have probably seen that in GitHub or GitLab projects there is a panel on the right side with a section called Releases If you click it you ll see the release information something like this So do you know what v rc means Well let s look at something else before proceeding in the home page you will find the tags label Please click it now you should see something like this The first tag name matches the current release name You re now ready to understand its meaning This notation is known as semantic versioning it refers to the version number of a project and It s important because it says to you what changes could have been introduced in the code concerning the previous version As you can see almost all tags are written in the vX Y Z format with numbers and this is the semantic versioning core X Major It indicates a drastic change in the code It isn t compatible with previous code versions Y Minor It indicates a feature addition or feature modification but the current code is compatible with the previous versions Also is used when it s necessary to mark something as deprecated Z Patch Generally it s used to fix bugs and still is compatible with the previous code versions Now how can you apply this if for example you are starting a project It s pretty simple Let s go to do a practical example We re going to create a repo in GitHub you can name it whatever you want The repo had been created If you look closely you will see that there is only one branch the main branch Before beginning to create commits we need to create another branch remember that it isn t a good practice to send changes directly to the main branch Then let s create the v branch is actually v but when Z is zero we can omit it from the branch name Well this is a good point to explain additional adjusts a All branches must be created from the main branch b The v branch is used because will be the first release and probably not a stable version it will need more adjusts c All tags between and should be contained in the v or v branch all tags between and should be contained in the v or v branch and so on d Probably the v branch will have only one tag the v and this is right because is our first version so we re implementing the initial functionality of the project e When the changes introduced in the current branch are ready you must create a PR to merge with the main branch Now we re going to create commits implementing the transactional system features a Install the initial project configuration and its dependencies b Add the login signup component c Implement the allowed transactions d Add the user roles e Limit the user permissions f Implement a public dashboard to display transactions in real time g Implement methods to ensure transaction integrity Now in the v branch we have the previous commits As these features will be our first project version let s create the tag with its version number in this case we ll create the v tag to establish the project version git tag a v m Initial release git push origin tagsIf you see the GitHub repo now there s a tag the one we just created With this first version we can create the PR to merge the v branch with the main branch Now if you return to the main branch you ll see something like the following so let s create our first release The process to create new tags and publish releases is very similar to the one seen above e g if we wanted to solve a security problem in version we would create commits to solve it on the v branch then we could create the v tag create again a PR to merge with the main branch and finally create the release with this version more stable than the previous one In some projects you can see releases like v alpha v beta Do you know what is this These additional words are stability indicators and they use greek letters so alpha lt beta i e beta is more stable than alpha In some projects release candidates are also used which are branches that are sufficiently solid or that want to establish enough solidity when the release is created which will probably be used by end users it will have as few errors as possible Surely this is not the only way to use semantic versioning in projects so far I think it is a good way to do it and it s easy to understand and share there may be better ways to do it so why don t you tell me how you do it or what you would improve to the current one This information may be of interest to you Continuous Deployment with Semantic Release and GitHub Actionssemantic releaseSemantic versioningAbout releases |

Thermacell releases its first smart mosquito repellent systemThere are only a few weeks left of winter so it s time for many folks to start planning their outdoor setup so they can get the most out of the warmer months Unfortunately that means irritating bugs like mosquitos are on the way back To ward off those pesky pests Thermacell has released a smart mosquito repellent system called Liv Liv connects multiple repeller units to a smart hub You can switch the system on and off using the hub Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant The Liv mobile app also offers control over the repellers You can turn them on or off from anywhere set timers and set up push notifications Using a feature that s in beta you ll be able to monitor the cartridge levels of each device Thermacell which also offers battery powered bug repellent units says the system isn t designed to run around the clock Cartridges should last for a season ーaround eight hours per week for weeks ーbefore requiring refills The repellent uses percent metofluthrin as the active ingredient and the units heat the cartridges to emit a small amount of fog Thermacell says the fog is odorless and provides a foot radius of protection from mosquitoes ThermacellLiv requires a wired setup though Thermacell can connect customers who aren t keen on DIY with professionals who can install it for them The company says the repellents are weatherproof so you shouldn t need to disassemble the system and put it back together every year Thermacell had been teasing the system for a while and it s available to order now Liv starts at for a pack of three repellers which the company says will cover up to square feet plus the hub cables standard mounts and ground stakes Thermacell claims the four pack will cover square feet and the five pack will cover square ft The system can connect up to five repellers ーadding an extra one will run you Refills meanwhile cost for a pack of six It s not an inexpensive system especially for those who spend a lot of time in the yard or on the porch Still if it works as promised Liv could keep the mosquitoes at bay without relying on other smellier deterrents |

Amazon's Luna cloud gaming service officially launches in the US |
https://www.engadget.com/amazon-luna-official-launch-date-162639085.html?src=rss
|
Amazon x s Luna cloud gaming service officially launches in the USIt took a year and a half but Amazon s Luna cloud gaming service finally exists as more than an early access project Amazon has formally launched Luna in the mainland US for Android iOS Chrome OS macOS and Windows The core Luna service with over games will normally cost per month with the kid friendly Family Channel and Ubisoft Channels available for a respective and per month Amazon hopes to reel in newcomers by dropping the monthly fees of Luna and the Family channel to and for anyone who signs up during March Existing users just have to maintain their subscriptions to lock in that pricing The official debut comes alongside some new channels A Prime Gaming channel as the name implies gives Amazon Prime members a free rotating mix of games The March selection will include titles like Devil May Cry and Flashback Pay per month for the Retro Channel and you ll get Capcom and SNK classics like Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting and Metal Slug while a similar outlay for the Jackbox Games Channel provides access to all eight Jackbox Party Pack titles Luna s latest update also makes it simpler to stream gameplay from a Fire TV device Mac or Windows PC on Twitch You ll need a webcam and mic if you want to interact with viewers but this might be an option if you re determined to broadcast and don t have a brawny enough computer to play demanding locally stored games Amazon s challenge as with comparable services like Microsoft s Game Pass Ultimate is to convince players that subscription based game streaming is a good supplement or even replacement for conventional PC and console gaming experiences You ll have the convenience of playing on seemingly every device you own but you ll also be limited by what you can play and the quality of your internet connection Amazon s main advantage is its ubiquity ーit can make sure people are aware Luna exists whether they re watching on Twitch or buying a Fire TV gadget for the living room |
