Setting up Static Website on AWS SHello Geeks You gotta an overview of article by the title It s and world is using CMS System for their websites or custom developed dynamic websites but still there are lot of geeks who have static websites and i am one of them Back in i develeoped a javascript enabled web based MQTT Client for MQTT Broker testing and debugging For the hosting of i used lot of different web hosting services but after becoming AWS Community Builder i started reviewing the services related to cloud storage Already i am using AWS Lightsail and CloudFront for my E Commerce amp Tutorial website but this time when i studied about S i made a plan to host one of my static website on S to get the taste of cloud for static website So if we generally talk about AWS S it s a storage services to host docs images videos or what ever you want to host on it S is a reasonable and good solution in terms of Space Bandwidth and region availability so they are also providing option to host static website Right now i am going to explore how to host static website on S but in future articles i will share how to host video content on S for educational website Firstly login into your AWS Console Step After login type S in the search and click on S Service Step Click on Create Bucket Button Step After clicking on Bucket you will see a very long tail form but you don t need to worry as all are simple options Firstly enter the full domain name under bucket name in my scenario i have www mqtt run domain name Select the region which is nearest to you it will give awesome browsing experience to your users i am choosing Singapore as it s near to my region if you want to Copy settings from existing bucket then choose the bucket else don t touch it Choose ACL Disabled Under Object Ownership Uncheck the Block all public access Under Block Public Access settings for this bucket and click on checkbox I acknowledge that the current settings might result in this bucket and the objects within becoming public Leave the other configurations as it is and click on Create Bucket Button after that you will see your buckets like that now click on bucket for further configuration Under Objects tabs click on Upload and upload your files and folders don t upload zip file as there is no option to extract the zip files you need to upload files and folder manually the good thing is that just select the folder and it will take care of all files and folder inside the selected folder After that click on Properties tab and scroll down the page to bottom and find the section Static website hosting and click on Edit as we need to enable website feature on our S Bucket Select Enable under Static website hosting and Select Host a static website under Hosting type provide Index document which is usually index html or default html but in my case it s index html After selecting all these options just save the changes After Changes you will see the URL of your static website But when you click on that url you will get the file permission error as because we didn t set any permission policy on our bucket Click on Permission Tab Scroll the page and find Bucket policy and click on Edit Copy the below Policy just write your bucket name instead of www example com and click on save changes Version Statement Sid PublicReadGetObject Effect Allow Principal Action s GetObject Resource arn aws s www example com Again open the URL and it will work fine Hurry Congrats Next you need to point Your domain to S Bucket URL Either you can point your domain cname records to S Static website URL or you can use AWS Route to setup nameservers for your domain Well i am asuming that you don t have access to create cname records in your domain panel Step Click on Top search bar and type Route and click on Route below from the suggestions Click on Hosted Zone Click on Create Hosted Zone Enter Domain name and leave the other settings Click on Create Hosted Zone After that you will get your zone listed Click on your Domain Copy Nameservers and set to domain in domain panel After setting your domain Nameservers click on Create Record Here select CNAME under Record Type and Enter S Website URL under Value textarea and click on Create Record Button It will take some time to propagate the DNS Settings later you can browse your website by directly type URL instead of long S URL |

The definitive guide to using Terraform with the Serverless FrameworkOriginally posted at ServerlessIf your organization uses automation to manage cloud infrastructure you ve almost certainly heard about Terraform And if you ve built anything serverless you might have noticed that deploying with the Serverless Framework is a lot like running Terraform To which we say you re absolutely right Many companies using Serverless already use Terraform and some Serverless Framework functionality is similar to what Terraform can do especially when it comes to provisioning cloud resources So if both Terraform and Serverless can solve your infrastructure automation needs which one should you use And should you use just one for all purposes We ve got answers In this article we ll talk about the right way to manage infrastructure when using both Terraform and Serverless and check out a real world example of integrating Terraform and Serverless in a project Why automate infrastructure managementInfrastructure as Code IaC becomes really important once developers need a way to organize their growing cloud infrastructure and collaborate across teams Most importantly IaC tools make it necessary to have process and discipline there s a smaller chance of accidental or unexpected changes and it s easier to share configuration between different parts of your infrastructure Managing shared vs app specific infrastructureWhile we believe that all infrastructure should be managed with IaC automation we like to distinguish between the infrastructure that s specific to one application and the infrastructure that s shared between multiple applications in your stack Those might need to be managed in different ways Application specific infrastructure gets created and torn down as the app gets deployed You rarely change a piece of application specific infrastructure you ll just tear everything down and re create it from scratch As the app is developed the infrastructure that supports it also needs to change sometimes significantly from one deploy to another The shared infrastructure on the other end rarely gets re created from scratch and is more stateful The core set of infrastructure such as the set of security groups and your VPC ID won t change between the deploys of your application as they re probably referenced by many applications in your stack Those more persistent pieces of infrastructure will generally be managed outside of your deploy pipeline So application specific and shared infrastructure are different enough that they should be managed with different tools Serverless vs Terraform when to use whichFor an organization using both Terraform and Serverless here are the benefits of each and when you should choose one over the other Serverless for app specific infrastructureFor application specific infrastructure we suggest managing all the pieces with the Serverless Framework for a few reasons First you couple this infrastructure to the application itself Second we like to think that the application “owns things like the tables in the Postgres database There is little value in managing the table names outside of the application context e g in Terraform Third you can iterate your application release without touching your shared infrastructure Software releases decouple from shared infrastructure allowing you to focus on the application itself without having to worry about infrastructure changes Terraform for shared infrastructureHowever coupling shared infrastructure to a specific application isn t correct Shared infrastructure will usually get updated instead of re created from scratch This makes Terraform a nice way to manage that shared infrastructure it can be a central source of truth for the persistent cloud infrastructure and it manages updates to the existing infrastructure very well For exampleIf you have a shared database and two Serverless applications that create tables in it the database should be managed by Terraform The specific tables should be created and destroyed by the Serverless Framework during the app deployment and teardown process Where to draw the lineWith a database and its tables the distinction between app specific and shared infrastructure is clear But what happens if the entire database is only being used by one app What about the queues and queue subscriptions What if there is a contract between two Serverless microservices and they use a queue as an interface All these items fall somewhere between the app specific and the shared For cases like those we believe either option is fine It s more important to avoid confusion by keeping the decision consistent across your infrastructure Sharing data between Terraform and Serverless with SSMIf you use Terraform and Serverless to manage different pieces of your infrastructure you ll eventually need to share data between Terraform and Serverless projects Think VPC IDs security group IDs database names for RDS instances ーeverything that gets created via Terraform and consumed in Serverless The SSM parameter store is a great way to share the values between the two systems Terraform provides an SSM parameter resource that you can use to write arbitrary SSM keys You can then consume those keys in your serverless yml via the ssm reference An example of using SSM with Terraform and ServerlessTo illustrate the passing of parameters via SSM we ve created an example Infrastructure is managed by Terraform and there is a Serverless app that uses the results of Terraform operations to connect to a database The application can use that database connection to create the database tables or anything else required for the application itself to work Let s walk through both the Terraform and the Serverless configuration files to see how this looks in a simple project TerraformIn the Terraform project we create a resource that we need in this case it s a MySQL RDS instance We use the aws db instance data source you can find full documentation for it here Instead of specifying the database name directly we reference the variables called name and user and generate a random string to act as a password We then create a variables tf file with the content of name and user and set a few parameters on the random string When we run terraform apply the following happens var name gets replaced by the name value that we define in the variables tf Once the database we specify in main tf is created the aws db instance default address value is replaced with the IP address of the database instance An SSM parameter is created with the name database testdb endpoint and contains the IP address of our database instance Our Terraform configuration stores not only the database endpoint but also the database user the password and the name of the database we are accessing ServerlessIn our Serverless config file we define a function that needs to connect to the database that we manage with Terraform In the definition of the function we create the environment variables to contain all the database connection parameters In each variable we reference an SSM parameter you can find docs on this here Note that we save the parameters to SSM as SecureStrings in the Terraform files above so we need to use the special true syntax to get those values inside serverless yml The variables we specify in the environment section get populated with the correct values from SSM during the deployment process and those values become available in the function s runtime environment In the body of the Serverless function we can then configure a MySQL connection with these values After that we re able to access the MySQL database managed via Terraform in our Serverless application Changing the database connection dataIf you need to change the configuration of the database in Terraform upon running terraform apply the SSM parameters the Serverless app references get updated But you need to redeploy the Serverless application to get those updated in the running app The limitations of SSMSSM provides a convenient way to reference parameters from Terraform in your Serverless projects It s important to note however that SSM is only available in Amazon Web Services It s also not the most secure solution as the values from SSM might end up in the build logs or CloudFormation templates See the disclaimer in this doc section Despite these limitations the option of using SSM to pass data from Terraform to Serverless works for most cases of managing shared and app specific infrastructure ConclusionTerraform is best suited for managing more persistent shared infrastructure while Serverless is a good fit to manage the application specific infrastructure Check above for the example of Potential Project IdeaAt Flatiron School we started in the last week of phase This week we will primarily be focusing on our project My partner and I decided to work on a search engine for characters in Lord of the Rings books using The One API While brainstorming about this project I thought about future potential projects I could work on with what I learned here at Flatiron School One of the projects I ve been thinking about is implementing the Google Calendar with a stopwatch app Stopwatch CalendarInspired by the Pomodoro technique I started to use a stopwatch to measure how much I did actual studying or work at college For example I would study for minutes then press the split button after to take a break for minutes I used the Time and Date stopwatch since it has a simple user interface and I can export the result as a text file and paste it into my Google Sheets spreadsheet What I want to do in this project is to use the data I made with the project and put them inside my Google calendar since the API for it gives access to add events So with the spreadsheet above the project will allow me to create something like this Benefits of having this applicationFrom measuring my day with a stopwatch I became aware of how much time I waste how much time I focus on my task and how much time I can work Using the stopwatch made me realize that my focused work hours in the morning is more valuable than the hours I put into studying after those blocks of time Furthermore it also made me realize how long I can stay awake and when my productivity falls off Another benefit is to compare the schedule set before the day with what is done actually Challenges There are many things to learn before diving into projects like this The most concerning problem is using the Google API Currently I have no idea on how to connect Google accounts to another application so this will be a learning experience Tools to use React JS NPM Google Calendar API andElectron to make React JS into a standalone app |

What is browser fingerprinting and why should you integrate with your website What is browser security In a world of increasing internet fraud it becomes important to secure your product on the internet from fraudsters Security is a very important part of a product and should not be taken with levity Over the years there have been several reports of intruders breaking into the account of users on the internet and carrying out fraudulent activities on it which has led to the loss of huge amount of money from users and companies Browser security becomes a huge concern since most uses the browser to access the internet Every user wants to know if the site they are visiting is safe to use they want to know that their data is safe with your website Once you can assure a visitor of data safety you just got a customer on your product Everyone wants to deal only in a place where there is safety This leaves developers with the task of ensuring user safety on the web People with malicious and fraudulent intents on the web need to be detected and stopped How do you do this Browsing fingerprinting What is browser fingerprinting Browser fingerprinting is a method websites use to collect information about a user in order to establish a unique set of parameters for identification upon subsequent visits The information collected includes browser type version operating system timezone language CPU GPU screen resolution extensions etc Still don t get it Think of it this way You visit a house putting on your favorite attire You played around the house leaving your fingerprints on everything you touched your footprints on the sand You came with your car having a license plate you made a phone call in that house Assuming you are an intruder the owner of the house doesn t know you and was not around when you visited wasn t exactly a visit right When the owner of the house returns and discovered someone came to his house in his absence someone now being you Finding you shouldn t be difficult for the house owner Why your fingerprints are all over his house his neighbors saw your car s license plate your footprint is littered all over the apartment Observe that not just one but many information called parameters you unwittingly left behind will be used to discover your identity and trace your location Browser fingerprinting works in a similar way Unlike local storage and cookies your fingerprint remains after browser data is purged Fingerprint also remain the same regardless of whether browsing happened in private incognito mode or not Browser fingerprinting helps you secure your website by detecting and preventing fraudulent activities from spamming multiple sign ups etc The accuracy of Browser fingerprinting is upto This is because it uses many parameters to uniquely identify each visitor and tracks down their activities Edward Snowden told journalists that the NSA uses screen resolution of computers to identify terrorists that right there is browser fingerprinting How does the NSA do that Well they basically just send a graphic on known size to a user of course the visibility of this graphic will be set to hidden the amount of pixel the browser can display from this graphic is measured This measurement can be used to get the list of devices having that pixel number Other information will be used to narrow this down Because of the accuracy of browser fingerprinting it s no surprise that big techs use it to uniquely serve you ads based on your previous searches over the internet How to use browser fingerprinting to secure your website from fraudSometimes a user with malicious intent might want to do multiple signups that is signup to your product with multiple email addresses Browser fingerprint will pick that up for you You can also use it to prevent spamming spoofing etc Overall it can be used to detect and prevent fraud Use cases include Account takeover cryptocurrency exchange payment fraud ecommerce gaming buy now pay later etc Here are some browser fingerprinting libraries that exists for you to integrate with to help stop frauds spams and account takeovers FingerprintJSget browser fingerprintClientJSBrowser FingerprintKindly leave a comment if you d like me to write an article and build demos on how to integrate this library In the meantime you can go check these libraries up for yourself |

The One Query Performance Trick You NEED to Know Tune Table A good writer is supposed to draw you in with the title and bury the answer somewhere in the article I suppose this makes me a bad writer don t think less of me my whole feeling of self worth comes from the opinions of internet strangers When my dear colleague Brendan was reviewing information on the Developer Community he noticed that we failed to write anything on Tune Table This tool is the nd most important piece of query performance the first being indexes no indexes no speed and it is worth taking the time to understand I m going to be using a lot of half examples here but the details can be filled in trivially In all examples we can assume all fields are individually indexed unless stated otherwise Alright suppose we have the following query SELECT FROM PeopleWHERE Home State MA AND PersonId Which index should we use Seriously stop reading and come up with an answer Say it out loud Don t worry your colleagues probably won t think you re crazy The correct index to use is of course the index on PersonId Why is this true Well we know that the PersonId is a near unique numeric ish identifier while potentially millions of people reside in each state What we have to understand is that we know this because we know some information about the schema based on the column identifiers To a computer these names are meaningless To illustrate this point let s look at this query SELECT FROM TheTableWHERE Field AND Field Do we use the index on f or f The query above is similar to what the query optimizer has to work with How do we pick indexes in this case We need to know about the data in order to make good decisions This is where TuneTable comes in Tune Table looks through a sampling of the data in your table and stores statistics about your table so that our query optimizer can make good decisions If you have never run Tune Table then your queries are effectively choosing indexes at random this is not strictly true but it might as well be In fact if you ever call support because of a slow query the first thing we re going to ask you is “Have you run Tune Table The answer better be yes Running Tune TableTo run Tune Table you can go to a terminal and execute d SYSTEM SQL TuneTable There are many flags you can pass in but I recommend d SYSTEM SQL TuneTable msg These flags update the class definition display the new values and the last one keeps the class up to date You ll need to compile all embedded queries against your tables and purge cached queries so that your queries can take advantage of the new Tune Table information You can read more about the flags here What Tune Table DoesTune Table has a couple of steps First it computes the number of rows in the table by running SELECT COUNT With that number it figures out how many rows it wants to use as a sample it s asymptotically similar to the square root of the number of rows Then for each ID defined for the table we flip an appropriately weighted electronic coin and determine if that row will be in the sample We use this sample to calculate the statistics we can then use to optimize your queries There are two important bits here The first is that we need to get the count The second is that we need to be able to get each ID in your table The result is that having an extent index drastically helps the run time of Tune Table If your table is bitmap friendly that is has a positive integer IDKEY then any bitmap index will automatically give you a bitmap extent What does Tune Table measure I m going to break it up chronologically The Two OG sThe following two metrics are the oldest Tune Table metrics How old are they They were added before I got to High School If you are running pre YK Cachéthen please shoot me an email because I would love to talk to you Extent Size measures the number of rows in your table This metric is the easiest one to understand and is useful in deciding on JOIN order Suppose we have the following query SELECT FROM Table T JOIN Table T ON T Field T Field Should we read T and then JOIN in the fields from T or vice versa ExtentSize will tell us which table has fewer rows and therefore which table we ought to start with In the extreme case you can imagine that T has Billion rows while T has think something like T is a table of all visits to your hospital over all time and T is your table of patients currently at your hospital In that case you want to start in the small table and JOIN in the larger one as JOIN restricts the number of rows you have to read in Selectivity measures the uniqueness of a value for a given field This metric takes a little more explaining There are ways to think of it x where x is the number of possible values the field can takeAverage percentage of the table returned for the query SELECT FROM T WHERE field Let s look at some examples to help clear this up because neither of these explanations make sense For the above query we had a Home State field That would in the USA necessarily have a selectivity Why Well there are states so That s easy enough But what about distribution Clearly people are not evenly distributed over states This is true but selectivity doesn t care about that Uniform distribution ends up being a good estimation for most queries and it s easy to calculate meaning queries compile faster Another example let s think about PersonId a PersonId might occasionally have to get reused as people die and are born so the number isn t quite unique However it is very very unique For that we might see selectivity That is a very good selectivity The query SELECT FROM People WHERE PersonId will bring back one or two rows each time In general the lower the selectivity the better There is an exception…What if you have a unique field the ID is a good example The selectivity of a unique field is Note every selectivity I ve mentioned so far is a percentage is not a percentage but a number of rows So the query SELECT FROM People WHERE ID will always return row That s a lot of information about one field but it s perhaps the most important one The rule is the lower the percentage the better and is the best value of all The One We “Always HadThe following statistic was always estimated but started being explicitly measured in Block Count a measure of how many blocks each map index amp the master map take up on disk We have been estimating block count for a long time but we decided to measure it explicitly back in While this seems like it might be redundant along with Extent Size it has other utility Here s a good query to explain SELECT COUNT FROM MyTableIf every field is indexed then which one should we read Well we want to read the one that takes up the least amount of space on disk This metric gives us that information explicitly It also pops up when trying to estimate the cost of reading chunks of indexes in more complicated situations In general it s good at measuring the width of your maps while ExtentSize measures the length Block count is also useful if you use a parent child relationship This will by default store both tables in the same global and without Block Count the Query Optimizer wouldn t have any idea that a map read on a potentially small parent table could actually be very large due to the large number of children In fact this is one reason we do not recommend using Parent Child relationships in new development EVER If you think you want to please call into Support and let us discuss it with you Brendan s Note Trivia We actually had ExtentSize Selectivity and BlockCount all the way back to FDBMS days so at least but you had to set them manually The One That Changed EverythingIn we added a metric to determine if one value of a field was over represented This caused a big difference in how we calculated selectivity Outlier Selectivity The selectivity of a field that is overrepresented in the table To understand a situation with an outlier let s think about a hospital Hospitals generally service their local community For the field Home State most of the values will be the same as the state the hospital is in Let s consider a hospital in MA because that s where I live of my local hospital s patients are from MA while others have traveled from other states or are visiting We want to indicate that searching for Home State MA is not selective while searching for any other Home State IS selective That s what outlier selectivity gets us As an example Tune Table will calculate the Selectivity for the Home State field outlined above as something like and indicate that the outlier selectivity is and the outlier value would be MA The Selectivity generally goes down This change was a big one as it changed the way selectivities were calculated and came up with some query plans that surprised some people If you are upgrading across the boundary keep this in mind The Last OneWe added this last metric to better be able to estimate temp file sizes in Average Field Size The average size of a fieldThis metric is easy to understand as well While we are taking our samples it also computes the average size for each field in the table This is useful for determining the size of temp files and allows the optimizer to figure out if we can build temporary files in memory local array or if we need a disk backed structure process private global Practical ConsiderationsThe next question you should have is “how frequently do I need to run this The answer is a bit subtle You must MUST MUST MUST run it at least once or provide some values yourself After that you might never have to run it again The typical answer for this is that if you are happy with your performance now there s no reason to run it Indeed if you have a mature database and your data is growing at a steady rate among your tables then you probably have good values going forward If however your tables are changing and your SQL performance is degrading you might want to rerun Tune Table If you are having a lot of data incoming and your tables are changing by orders of magnitude it might be time to run Tune Table But this is all predicated by the situation of “All my queries are slow If you get to this point please contact the WRC who will want to look at some of your system settings If you are going to run Tune Table you want to make sure to run it on all tables that are related to the table you want to tune Otherwise their Extent Sizes and Block Counts become incomparable across tables and this WILL make your query performance suffer If you are on a version newer than you have the advantage of Frozen Query Plans which will allow you to freeze your query plans before running Tune Table I HIGHLY recommend this practice as it will allow you to run Tune Table and only take advantage of the new plan if it helps you can test your query with NOFPLAN to see if the new plans will help you Another note on Frozen Query Plans due to this technology you can run Tune Table without effecting any query that you have already run on your system It is a way for you to run Tune Table without worrying about effecting
