海外TECH DEV Community Improving Designer-Developer Collaboration With Figma UI Kits https://dev.to/kathryngrayson/improving-designer-developer-collaboration-with-figma-ui-kits-582b Improving Designer Developer Collaboration With Figma UI KitsAh the infamous designer developer handoff I ve often felt that it s a bit like negotiating a truce Two groups have agreed to work together but still don t really know how They both have something the other needs Will they be able to work something out Or will someone make an unexpected move and break the uneasy peace It s an unfortunate reality that designers and developers often have to overcome a level of distrust when working together They re coming to the table with vastly different perspectives and the finished work requires the skill sets of both parties There s often a lack of understanding and empathy on both sides Sometimes this misunderstanding has to do with high level things like skill sets workload time requirements or prioritization That kind of problem is a larger one which must be negotiated by team leads and management working together to find middle ground and rebuilding lost trust It s a systemic problem that requires a serious look at how the teams are working together and where the existing systems of communication are failing Just as often though the gap between the two teams is caused by miscommunication on a more technical level designers and developers using the same words to mean different things “grid is a common example lack of understanding about technical capabilities and what s possible or impossible for each side or just the natural clash that happens when two parties are approaching the same problem with different methodologies Unlike the previous situation this thankfully has an easier solutionーall they need is a bridge They need something to close the gap between them by aligning them around the same single source of truth This is one of the major problems that UI design kits or just “UI kits attempt to solve creating consistency and reducing miscommunication by providing that single source of truth that all parties can reference UI kits are often a fundamental part of larger design systems ーthey naturally provide documentation of the components and design tokens that are regularly used in your UI A full design system is a wonderful asset to your teams but creating one is a large and time consuming undertaking If you re just starting this process or still in the phase of getting buy in for such a project a UI design kit is a great place to start because you can start seeing the benefits right away with a much smaller upfront time investment What Is a UI Design Kit A UI design kit sometimes called a Figma kit Sketch kit etc depending on the design software used is a collection of all the elements of your UI design including but not limited to fonts colors icons component design files and documentation These are useful on their own both as a form of documentation and to speed up the design process by providing a set of base elements that can be reused in new designs but are especially powerful when combined with an existing UI component library ーsuch as the Telerik and Kendo UI Kits for Figma Figma is a popular design software used and loved by many teams for its extensive collaborative features With UI Kits you have a perfect to correlation between the components that the developers are using and the components that the designers are using Think of it like the Rosetta Stone of UI the exact same elements translated into different “languages How Can Designers Use Figma Kits Many third party component libraries are primarily focused on developers and the development experience but neglect the design experience Developers are often the ones who get to make the final decision about which technical tools to use and designers can feel frustrated when they discover that they re stuck with a library that doesn t provide them with the resources and support they need to do their jobs effectively These UI component libraries might have restrictions on the level of customization that s possible or have so few components that designers struggle to make their vision work within the confines of what s available If you ve ever heard a designer express a negative opinion about working with a pre existing component library these concerns are probably at the front of their mind The Kendo UI family of component libraries is built to eliminate that concern by prioritizing the design experience We believe that the goal of any set of tools should be to make everyone s lives easier ーnot just the developers To that end we ve partnered with designers both internally and externally to ensure that our libraries meet their needs as well The Figma Kits are a huge part of that offering combined with the extremely high level of customization available on all our components With Figma Kits designers are offered an inside look at how components are designed all their various user interaction states and the atomic design principles used to build the library This gives them an innate understanding of how the components work and how visual styles are carried through from the smallest tokens all the way up to the most complex components Our UI Kits make use of Figma components allowing designers to make changes at the base component or token level and see the edits at once across the entire suite of Kendo UI components Explore customize and build ーall from one incredible resource How Can Developers Use Figma Kits When your designs and your component library aren t aligned it can be an exhausting experience to try to translate the designer s intentions into your available components They often don t line up exactly and you re stuck either pushing the design back for revisions and explaining the technical limitations or trying to adjust the design during implementation to just get as close as possible These are obviously not ideal solutions and they both usually end with designers and developers frustrated with each other due to limiting factors that neither party has full control over But when you re using a library with a Figma Kit your designers already have full insight on available components and customization and the designs and prototypes they hand off to you will exactly match the components you re using If they want to adjust the styling the design tokens in the Kendo UI Figma Kits map exactly to SASS properties used in the library making it easy for designers and developers to synchronize on the look and feel of the components Designers can tell developers which property they adjusted because the names of every property are the same in the Figma Kit as they are in the SASS files and the Figma inspect tool will show the exact values of those new styles Say Goodbye to Frustration During Designer Developer Handoff Just to quickly recap using Figma Kits with an accompanying component library can eliminate confusion between designers and developers in the following ways Ensuring everyone is synchronized on what components states and properties are availableーincluding what they look like and what they re called Enabling designers to make changes at a granular level see the changes reflected across the library and then quickly and easily communicate those changes to developers Enabling developers to inspect the changes designers have made and then quickly and easily apply those styles to the equivalent SASS properties Making use of Figma Kits ensures a consistent user experience across your entire application ーor even a suite of applications Ease the handoff for yourself and see how your users will feel the difference in your UI it s a win win scenario 2022-03-29 12:51:57

海外TECH DEV Community JAVA vs Kotlin Programming Language https://dev.to/abdulaleemq/java-vs-kotlin-programming-language-4ol3 JAVA vs Kotlin Programming LanguageAre you looking to take your coding skills to the next level Either you re a beginner who wants to learn how to code in Kotlin or a developer who wants an update on the current Java programming language If so then read this blog post to get all the facts about these two languages and why one might better suit your project Kotlin is a relatively new language that was introduced by Google back in It can be used as both an object oriented and functional programming language two styles that are very popular at the moment This means it can be used in either web or mobile projects which is perfect for startups since starting off with fewer resources has always been easier than creating from scratch Java already had these two languages in its repertoire so the release of Kotlin was not a big surprise However Kotlin is different from Java in several ways Therefore if you are looking for more information about this language and its use with the JVM then this article can help you WHAT IS KOTLIN Before we get into the details of why Kotlin might be better than Java let s briefly learn about this new programming language It was initially developed by JetBrains a company that specializes in developing tools for developers and is available on Android as well as other platforms like Linux and Mac OS X This means that it works with any application that has been created using a Net Framework Kotlin is a statically typed and object oriented programming language This means that it can be used for applications of the following types web applications Android apps andweb services Some advantages of Kotlin include it has an intuitive type system its type safety allows for code refactoring providing code analysis warnings about potential bugs before they occur it also comes with a number of functional constructs such as extension functions and its simple syntax makes it easy to read and understand This enables it to act as a sort of middle ground between Java s verbosity and Scala s complexity a major benefit especially for beginners Because it is based on Java Kotlin can be easily integrated with Oracle s Java Virtual Machine JVM This means that you don t need to pick a framework before starting your project It also allows Kotlin to reuse a lot of the existing code that has already been written Speaking of which NET developers will recognize a lot of similarities between Kotlin and Scala In fact it s so similar that there are several open source projects currently being developed for the purpose of converting Scala to Kotlin This means that you can create new applications using both Kotlin and Scala at the same time even if they use different platforms like Net and Android respectively 2022-03-29 12:36:17
海外TECH DEV Community Future Javascript: Temporal https://dev.to/smpnjn/future-javascript-temporal-i68 Future Javascript TemporalI ve written in the past about the many quirks of Javascript dates The good news is that there are plans for an entirely new piece of Javascript functionality to clean up what Date does wrong That functionality is called Temporal In this guide we ll be covering why Temporal is better than Date and how to use it Support for TemporalTemporal is currently stage proposal which means that although a large portion of its functionality is stable there may be some changes in the future As the specification is not stable yet no browser or backend Javascript has implemented the temporal specification If you want to try out Temporal today you can try this polyfill use with caution in production What is Temporal Temporal consists of a bunch of big changes that are coming to Javascript to solve all the gripes developers have with Date Temporal sets out a vision to solve most of the issues that exist including Strongly typed objects or dates times date times year months month years zoned date times and durations Immutable objects compared to the mutability of current Date objects Interoperability between standardized date formats Support for all time zones and daylight saving s time safe arithmetic Compliance with major date time standards like ISO RFC and RFC Full support for non Gregorian calendars If you ve been struggling with any issues that are inherent with Date some of these changes are pretty exciting New Types of Data in TemporalOne of the most exciting parts of Temporal is that we finally have different types for different measurements of time In Date all dates are timestamps underneath With temporal we are finally given a range of different types of date time data These are PlainDateTime the date and time combined PlainDate the year month and day PlainTime the time PlainMonthDay the month and day PlainYearMonth the year and month Now similar to the current new Date implementation returns the current instant TimeZone the timezone Calendar any calendar extensionsZonedDateTime the entire date and time with timezone extensions and calendar extensions Instant PlainDateTime plus timezone offset Duration define a duration of time and may use years months weeks days hours etc That means we can finally define a date and have it mean a specific date rather than a timestamp or date time Here is a breakdown of how each time or date type conforms with a standard date time string Temporal MethodsThe cool thing about how the Temporal functionality has been built is that every single type defined above has an associated constructor and then methods for each of those objects That means we have constructors like Temporal PlainDate Temporal Now Temporal PlainTime Temporal ZonedDateTime etc Each of these have two common methods from which lets us make a date or time from a set of data and compare which lets us compare two dates or times Let s look at a few examples Defining a Date in TemporalLet s say we want to create a date Previously we would ve had to use new Date in Javascript and even then this would ve been a date time With Temporal we can use the PlainDate object which only returns dates Every constructor has two common methods from and compare which let us create dates and times from a set of data and to compare two sets of date times If we want to create a PlainDate we can do so by writing the following let myDate Temporal PlainDate from year month day hour second minute Since this returns data of type PlainDate it will only return meaning no more worries about timezones or the Unix epoch Further to that we can gather data from that new PlainDate data point let myDate Temporal PlainDate from year month day hour second minute myDate year myDate month myDate day myDate inLeapYear falsemyDate toString Getting the current Unix EpochThere will still be plenty of times when we need to get the current timestamp but Temporal separates this functionality out from other valid functionality such as date only or timezone only constructors Here are some examples let currentTime Temporal Now instant Current unix timestamp Getting a time with TemporalThere are also some times when we only want to get the time and not pollute that information with the date We can use the PlainTime type to get that data Another cool thing about Temporal is it goes down to nanoseconds whereas currently in Javascript we only have milliseconds The below code will return As in our previous example we can use from to create our PlainTime and then get data off the back of that function using various methods let myDate Temporal PlainTime from hour second minute millisecond microsecond nanosecond myDate hour myDate second myDate minute myDate millisecond myDate microsecond myDate nanosecond myDate toString Comparing two dates with TemporalComparing dates could be really difficult with Date since we were often working from Unix epoch timestamps With temporal since we have date types we can easily compare two dates using the compare method It should be noted that all Temporal objects contain a method called compare so comparing many different dates and times is really easy too Here is an example comparing two dates let now Temporal Now instant let checkDate Temporal PlainDate from year month day Returns true when it is Temporal PlainDate compare now checkDate Creating a Regular Zoned Date TimeIt s what we re sort of used to when working with Date and we can easily create a full date time with timezone in Temporal too The same principles apply we can use from to create it and we have access to a number of attributes too We can also compare it against other dates and times using compare let myDate Temporal PlainDate from timeZone Europe Belfast year month day hour second minute millisecond microsecond nanosecond myDate year myDate month myDate day myDate hour myDate second myDate minute myDate millisecond myDate microsecond myDate nanosecond myDate toString T Europe Belfast ConclusionTemporal is full of a lot more content From the examples above it s easy to see the value proposition that Temporal brings to Javascript and why it s so exciting for date time related features I hope you ve enjoyed this guide here are some useful links if you want to keep reading The many quirks of Javascript dates The Temporal Documentation 2022-03-29 12:34:59

海外TECH DEV Community 3 key ingredients to building a strong incident response process https://dev.to/incident_io/3-key-ingredients-to-building-a-strong-incident-response-process-1277 key ingredients to building a strong incident response processWhen building an incident response process it s easy to get overwhelmed by all the moving parts Less is more focus first on building solid foundations that you can develop over time Here are three things we think form a key part of a strong process I d recommend taking these one at a time introducing incident response throughout your organisation Just being transparent we re a startup providing incident management software  incident io We believe that using our software will help build a good incident process otherwise we wouldn t be doing it But beyond that we ve also got a lot of experience building and participating in incident processes and think this advice is generically useful regardless of whether you choose our product Define what an incident isThis is in the words of Julie Andrews a very good place to start Getting a common understanding of what an incident is and isn t is the first step in bringing people into your incident response process An incident is where something unexpected happens that has or might have a negative consequence If you re interested in reading more we ve dedicated a whole blog post to this question Particularly when you re getting started the best way to embed a process into your organisation is to use it A lot This also helps everyone learn the process and get better at incident response overall meaning that when something really bad happens it feels like a well oiled machine To this end you want a broad and inclusive definition of an incident Declaring an incident should be easy and everyone should be able to do it without fear of repercussions Avoid long questionnaires which add friction to the process and de incentivise declaring incidents at all Don t assign blame or other negative consequences to declaring an incident This includes not using number of incidents as a metric for team health or performance Your lowest severity should represent something that happens regularly and has a low impact so people feel comfortable declaring incidents and don t feel like a boy crying wolf Don t limit the definition to engineering getting your whole org to think about anything unexpected in the same way means you can collaborate better see section Keep everyone updatedTransparency by default is a really important value to bake into your incident process First up make sure it s clear who is responsible for communicating Whether that s the incident lead or another chosen individual making some explicitly accountable is the best way to keep the updates coming Make it really easy to tell stakeholders what s going on and use the tool that makes the information easiest to consume whether that s email Slack or something else entirely Use a predictable format for the updates as this makes them easier to parse and scan if you re a busy stakeholder flying through their notifications These updates also advertise your incident process and normalise the fact that incidents happen Ideally someone s first interaction with the incident process at your org should be as a consumer of an update not being parachuted into the middle of something Get comfortable admitting that things go wrong both internally and to some extent externally with customers This builds trust and enables people to adapt their behaviour to mitigate the impact on their side e g if a customer knows you are having an outage they ll move to another task and come back tomorrow instead of furiously refreshing the page You should also check out five steps to better customer comms to learn more Remember it s not over until it s overYour incident process shouldn t end once the problem is resolved To get value from your incidents you want to be using them to learn and improve your day to day operations There are often follow up actions that need to be put on someone s backlog or wider problems that should be considered and prioritised Post mortem documents and incident reviews are a great way to extract learnings from an incident They help encourage reflection and often bring up related concerns about the way the team is working However there s a Goldilocks zone If the post incident process feels painful people will stop declaring incidents at all Clearly communicate the value of your post incident process making sure it doesn t feel like a box ticking exercise Don t make it harder than it needs to be try to avoid repetitive manual work e g using a tool or template Give people autonomy to decide what s appropriate for the incident they ve experienced Sometimes a simple update in the incident channel explaining what happened and why is completely sufficient Sometimes you ll want to run a full blown cross team workshop to understand what happened and why the response didn t go as smoothly as you d hoped SummaryWhen you re first building an incident response process focus on a few key things Get a shared understanding of what an incident is and don t make it too specific Make it easy to provide updates both to internal and external stakeholders Reflect on incidents to gather learnings but make sure the process is adding valueOnce you ve got these nailed you can start layering more stuff on top But don t try to run before you can walk 2022-03-29 12:30:42

the study shows as reasons for developers unhappiness Reasons of unhappiness Time pressureBeing stuck in problem solving and time pressure are the two most frequent causes of unhappiness developers feel bad when they are stuck and under pressure and several detrimental consequences do happenDevelopers are pressed for time when they have estimates deadlines sprints Very rarely there s a rational reason to have deadlines in software development and even more estimations at all I suggest you watch my talk on the topic There s also a good book NoEstimates which explains how to meet goals without imposing time pressure on the developers Advice consider getting rid of estimations story points deadlines sprints or any other practice imposing time pressure on developers Broken professional ethicsThe third most frequent cause of unhappiness is to work with bad code and more specifically with bad code practices Developers are unhappy when they produce bad code but they suffer tremendously when they meet bad code that could have been avoided in the first place As our participants stated bad code can be a result of management decisions aiming to save time and effort in the short term Developers are sometimes forced by time pressure or manager s order to produce low quality code We covered time pressure coming from estimations or deadlines but there are cases when the manager wants it sooner just because Unfortunately this request is often considered an order so the developer decreases the quality of the code they write making the overall system more expensive to support Martin Fowler has an excellent article explaining how cutting costs on quality makes development more expensive So it s a developer s job as a specialist in this area to make sure they produce quality code thus yielding the overall cost of development low even if some manager asks to make it more expensive by imposing weird requirements This obligation to do the work properly is called professional ethics When a patient is having surgery no one can demand a surgeon to finish the operation sooner Everyone respects the surgeon s work Surgeons professional ethics rely solely on the surgeon s professional judgment of how the procedure is to be done for the best of the patient In software development it s the developer s professional judgment that is to be used to determine how the code should be written Advice managers stop increasing development costs by asking or demanding to cut development costs or ship something faster developers stand for your professional ethics Suppose a manager asks you to cut the time ーdon t Take your time to write quality code Negative social dynamicsSimilar negative effects were mentioned regarding third persons such as colleagues team leaders or customers who make developers feel inadequate with their work forced repetitive mundane tasks and imposed limitations on developmentProcess activities processes design choices or organisational structure choices start or toggle negative social group dynamics Some examples testing after developmentcode reviewteam silosHere s an article to read Quote Every human being associates her work results with themselves Valuing things we spend effort on doing is innate to our nature Whenever a developer receives feedback like “this has to be redone they will inevitably associate this feedback with themselves The more effort a person spent on doing something the more vulnerable she is to the critics And while she hadn t been taught properly how the problem should have been solved she considers negative feedback even worse Internet s full of posts and articles on how to “solve this “negativity problem Most of these posts talk about how to provide more “positive feedback Microsoft even hired a fully dedicated specialist working on this issue However this all seems palliative treatment none of these approaches offer to solve the problem properly Solving the problem properly would be introducing the teaching or planning phase before the effort on doing the task is spent and a feeling of achievement emerges Advice think about what behaviors your process activities encourage in developers Are they encouraged to collaborate as in pair ensemble programming or are they encouraged to frown upon results of each other work as in code review BoredomSimilar negative effects were mentioned regarding third persons such as colleagues team leaders or customers who make developers feel inadequate with their work forced repetitive mundane tasks and imposed limitations on developmentKey points here are repetitive and mundane Software development as pretty much any other type of intellectual labour is all about solving problems World changes often new problems arise all the time there s pretty much always something new to solve Yet sometimes developers do need to do something not new something they know for sure how to do The problem which toggles unhappiness is when the amount of repetitive tasks is getting high Some examples manual verification of code quality testing writing boilerplate codesolving the same task over and over again after code review rejection for example Advice check the amount of rework waste think how this rework can be minimised possibly get rid of code review in favour of pair ensemble programming or at least pair ensemble technical design consider having repetitive work automated shifting from manual regression testing to automated testing or even TDD Another fundamental concept here is mundane work Mundane generally implies a lack of interest But what is this lack of interest How does interest emerge in developers It seems obvious that if there s no understanding as to why the work is needed what value it brings to the team or the client interest will unlikely emerge So it seems to be very important to have full transparency on why the work that s requested is important and what value it brings Perception of inadequacy of the selfSeveral top causes are related to perceptions of inadequacy of the self and othersManagers often have survivor bias and confirmation bias ーthey think that if some people or even they work in the current environment this environment is optimal for productivity Managers might consider the environment optimal even though this environment might include things like measuring individual performance or even worse some individual KPI or a lack of mentorship There are two essential concepts people are primarily irrational even when they think they are rational teams are assembled to provide a collective result the design of a system has more importance than the individual performance of a developer So if a developer sees that their individual performance will be somehow assessed in a performance review let s say the chances are that the developer will worry about their adequacy a lot And as people are pretty irrational there s a big risk that this worry turns into a serious problem Advice consider getting rid of a concept of individual performance and for sure get rid of all individual KPIs read more on Goodhart s law make sure your socio technical system
