海外TECH	DEV Community	I Miss The Good Old Backend Days - What Do You Prefer?	https://dev.to/tuwang/i-miss-the-good-old-backend-days-what-do-you-prefer-1l4	I Miss The Good Old Backend Days What Do You Prefer I ve transitioned to product facing engineer for about years now I wouldn t call myself a front end engineer or a full stack engineer I don t think I m qualified either I ve departed the pure Backend service engineer role Now I m working on product features where I occasionally tap into different stacks but mostly focusing a smooth product experience What do you prefer Backend or frontend Web or Mobile Infra or Product The Backend RoleI m aware of many public definitions of engineers frontend backend software vs hardware web vs mobile or the glorious full stack etc To me I ve only had role previously at Amazon for years a backend engineer working on services That means my role is primarily about designing and building backend APIs This has changed since I joined a new company It has been years since I look at API designs I certainly miss it What I Missed the MostThe decision making processing was simpler The whole theme was about the API contract and use cases You keep on finding corner cases and solving them where the end user is usually another team s engineers You can disagree on many things but all conflicts come down to certain set of mandatory use cases and another set of non MVP use cases The decision making is simple in a way that backend system do not often have to worry about the human factor it s not user facing Engineers have a lot more control of the end to end system design What I Don t MissI didn t enjoy the fact that my backend work was not usable by human beings At dinner table I m sure we all get these questions what do you work on My answer is often vague because when I say I work on backend system it s really difficult for people to visualize or weigh the value of my work Working on pure backend team far from user facing product I was lack of many aspects of modern software development I found out much later that there are engineers who wear many hats user experience end to end project timeline collaborations with other systems These are critical skill sets to train if I were to lead a team to build something RealityNow when I occasionally bump into people working on backend design it just reminds me of the goold old conversations I used to have with teammates Once in a while I wish I can dial back and just work with system that talks to systems What do you prefer to work on Has anything changed in the past years Backend or frontend Web or Mobile Infra or Product	2022-04-03 23:22:34

ContentsIntroductionHow RP OperatesCall for Coders IntroductionRP is a privacy focused free open source US cryptocurrency tax calculator that is up to date for Fiscal Year Preparing crypto taxes can be a daunting and error prone task especially if multiple transactions coins exchanges and wallets are involved This task could be delegated to a crypto tax preparation service but many crypto users value their privacy and prefer not to send their transaction information to third parties unnecessarily Additionally many of these services cost money RP solves all of these problems it manages the complexity related to coin flows and tax calculation and it generates data that accountants can understand in the format of form even if they are not cryptocurrency experts it prioritizes user privacy by storing crypto transactions and tax results on the user s computer and not sending them anywhere else it s free and open source Another unique advantage of RP is transparent computation it generates full computation details for every lot fraction so that it s possible to verify step by step how RP reaches the final result RP supports the FIFO and LIFO accounting methods to help minimize the amount due It reads in a spreadsheet containing crypto transactions The spreadsheet can be generated either manually or automatically using DaLI a RP data loader and input generator which is also privacy focused free and open source After parsing the input RP uses high precision math to calculate long short term capital gains cost bases balances average price in out lot relationships fractions and finally it generates output spreadsheets RP has a programmable plugin architecture for output generators accounting methods and countries The output generator builtin plugins are US specific but RP s architecture makes it possible to contribute additional generators for different countries or for different US based cases Similarly DaLI has its own programmable plugin architecture for data loaders both CSV and REST based How RP OperatesRP s has been designed with expressive primitives that can be used as building blocks for most tax scenarios complex tax events can be described with patterns built using these primitives see the FAQ list for examples particularly the DeFi related ones RP treats virtual currency as property for tax purposes as per IRS Virtual Currency Guidance RP supports the FIFO and LIFO accounting methods however in and out lots typically don t have matching amounts so RP fractions them maps in out lot fractions and computes the resulting cost basis and capital gains for each lot fraction RP groups lot fractions into the following taxable event categories each of which has a specific tax treatment AIRDROP gains from airdrops DONATE donations to charitable organizations FEE fee only transaction used in some DeFi scenarios e g gas fee for running certain smart contracts GIFT gifts to parties who are not charitable organizations not tax deductible HARDFORK gains from hard forks INCOME gains from miscellaneous income e g Coinbase Earn INTEREST gains from interest MINING gains from mining MOVE the fee for moving currency between two accounts controlled by the same owner SELL specifically sale and exchange of one cryptocurrency for another RP splits them in two subcategories long term capital gains if the lot was held for more than year orshort term capital gains otherwise STAKING gains from staking WAGES income from crypto wages For each of these categories RP generates an output spreadsheet with transaction details and support for more exchanges and wallets via REST API and or CSV files Dali the RP data loader uses them to generate an input ODS file and a config file that can be fed directly to RP RP plugins RP can be expanded via its programmable plugin architecture which enables support for new output generators countries and accounting methods RP GUI make RP more user friendly and accessible to people who are not familiar with the CLI RP high level interface RP captures complex tax events using a few powerful low level primitives aggregated in patterns A higher level tool might abstract out these patterns
