Installing Arch Linux IntroductionHello here I will share how I installed Arch Linux on a new PC I got Obviously the installation varies on numerous factors but I will share my method and hopefully it helps you and future me InstallationFirst you need to download the Arch Linux ISO file which can be found here Next if your installing on a PC you will need to create a bootable media if your using a virtual environment this is not necessary but the steps to do this can be found here Setting the keyboard layoutThe default layout is US but if your like me and need to change the keyboard layout you can do so via the following commands List the available layoutsls usr share kbd keymaps map gz Set the keyboard layoutloadkeys jp Connecting to the internetThis will vary depending on if your using a ethernet cable in my case I m using Wifi so I use the following to connect to the internet iwctl iwctl device list iwctl station wlan scan iwctl station wlan get networks iwctl station wlan connect network name You can check if you re connected via ping google com Updating the system clockYou can update the system clock via timedatectl set ntp true Partitioning the disksThe devices can be found in dev directory Partitioning can be done via the fdisk command List the devicesfdisk l Create the EFI partition NOTE you do not need to do this if a EFI partition is already available fdisk n fdisk ENTER fdisk M fdisk ENTER Create the swap partition fdisk n fdisk ENTER fdisk G fdisk ENTER Create the root partition here we will use all the remaining space fdisk n fdisk ENTER fdisk ENTER Finally save the partitions and exit fdisk via Ctrl D fdisk w Format the partitionsNow that the partitions have been created we need to format them Format the EFI partition NOTE only do this if you created the partition in the above step mkfs fat F EFI Initialize the swap partitionmkswap swap Create an Ext file systemmkfs ext root Mount the file systemsNext we need to mount the root volume and enable the swap volume mount root mntswapon swap Installing the required packagesNext we need to install the essential packages and some optional ones I prefer vim but you can use any IDE you want pacstrap mnt base linux lts linux lts headers linux firmware vim wget Configure the systemNext we need to generate an fstab file and change root into the new system genfstab U mnt gt gt mnt etc fstab NOTE check the fstab file for errors arch chroot mnt Setting the timezoneThe timezone can be configured via the following commands ln sf usr share zoneinfo Japan etc localtimehwclock systohc LocalizationNext we need to generate the locales and keymap Uncomment any need locales from the following file vim etc locale gen LANG ja JP UTF Set the keyboard layoutvim etc vconsole conf KEYMAP jp Network ConfigurationCreate the following file and give the machine a unique name vim etc hostname Setting the root passwordThe root password can be changed via the following simple commandpasswd Installing and configuring the boot loaderNext we need to install and configure a bootloader for this I will be using GRUB and machine has an Intel CPU you will need to enable the AMD microcode updates if you have an AMD CPU pacman S intel ucodepacman S grub efibootmgr Configure EFIgrub install target x efi efi directory mnt efi bootloader id GRUBgrub mkconfig o boot grub grub cfg Creating the usersNext we need to create a user that will use the machine we will also install sudo and add the user to the sudoers list useradd m user passwd user usermod aG wheel user Install and enable sudopacman S sudovim etc sudoers Uncomment wheel Setting up the Graphical User InterfaceNext we need to setup the Graphical User Interface pacman S xorg xorg serverpacman S gnome gnome tweaks Enable the servicesystemctl enable gdm Optional Enabling Japanese FontsSince I m using a Japanese keyboard etc the fonts also need to be installed and configured if you do not need them please skip to the next step pacman S adobe source han sans jp fontspacman S fcitx im fcitx configtool fcitx mozc fcitxvim home user xprofileexport GTK IM MODULE fcitxexport QT IM MODULE fcitxexport XMODIFIERS im fcitx Installing the Network ManagerNext we need to install and enable the network managerpacman S networkmanagersystemctl enable NetworkManager Installing misc packagespacman S networkmanagersystemctl enable NetworkManagerpacman S nvidia ltspacman S base develpacman S bluezsystemctl enable bluetoothNow we can finally install any optional packages since I have a Nvidia Graphics card I will also Building with the GitHub APII have a long history of building things with the GitHub API Many years ago when running the Docker open source project where we needed tools for GitHub tasks automation icecrime poule and project health metrics icecrime vossibility stack Today with Echoes which integrates with GitHub among others to help engineering leaders create high performing organizations We will look in this post at an unordered list of things that I ve learned along the way GitHub Apps or OAuth AppsThere are two ways to integrate with GitHub as a GitHub App or as an OAuth App While the difference is explained in GitHub documentation it s worth reinforcing how neat GitHub Apps are GitHub App use their own identity not that of a user In other words actions performed by the app will appear as originating from the app itself not whoever lended a token GitHub Apps have fine grained permissions Considering the sensitivity of GitHub data this is crucial in order to build integrations which follow the principle of least privilege In the example of Echoes this is how we drastically reduce our security requirements by not requesting access to the content of the git repository GitHub Apps provide an excellent installation experience which includes installing on all or selected repositories reviewing permissions and permissions scope updates If you re building in Go bradleyfalzon ghinstallation is an implementation of http RoundTripper which authenticates as a GitHub App for example to use in combination with google go github GitHub v or GitHub vGitHub has two active versions of its API a v REST API and a v GraphQL API Which one you should build against is partly a matter of personal preference but chances are high that you will end up using both The entire API surface is not available in both versions For example the Webhook Deliveries API referenced later in this post is only available in v Another trickier aspect is that while GitHub Apps permissions naturally map to v endpoints things are not as clear when using the v A GraphQL query requires the union of all permissions of its individual fields to succeed or will result in a confusing “resource not accessible by integration error It is not always obvious which part of the query causes the error especially when a seemingly equivalent call using the v REST API succeeds under the same permissions In our particular codebase the interactions with the GitHub API appear to converge to using v GraphQL API for data retrieval and to using v REST API for mutations e g adding a label to an issue or situations where v didn t behave the way we expected Defending against GitHub side issuesGitHub like any other complex system is imperfect Two issues we have seen are minor API downtimes with responses and occasional authentication issues with responses using a freshly issued access token Both cases can be mitigated with automated retries We went with hashicorp go retryablehttp as Echoes is built in Go The library s default retry policy rightly doesn t consider a response as a recoverable error but this can be changed using the CheckRetry hook Defending against integration side issuesChances are that your integration won t be perfect either What will happen to GitHub events when your app is unresponsive or fails to handle a message GitHub has a UI for inspecting recent deliveries and manually triggering new deliveries This is immensely useful for development and debugging but cannot help if you need to recover from any significant number of missed messages At Echoes like we did at Docker we re using our own durable queues to handle messaging processing However GitHub has since introduced the Webhook Deliveries API which allows listing past deliveries and triggering redeliveries Learn about secondary rate limitsGitHub API has two rate limiting mechanisms one based on a number of requests per hour in the case of GitHub Apps for github com and one based on the nature of the interactions themselves The former is quite typical and easy to account for by examining GitHub API s reponse headers Complying with the latter however requires to be thoughtful and review how the system as a whole interacts with the GitHub API including all services tasks and jobs in combination with various retry policies Two of the guidelines to avoid hitting the secondary rate limits deserve particular attention Do not make requests for a single user or client ID concurrently If you re making a large number of POST PATCH PUT or DELETE requests for a single user or client ID wait at least one second between each request As a general rule of thumb we would recommend against multiplying systems that will have to share the API budget ConclusionGitHub is the place where most development work happens and building tools for it can be extremely rewarding GitHub puts a lot of effort in its platform as seen by the introduction of GitHub Apps and how the API continues to evolve Google is banning third party call recording apps from the Play StoreGoogle is introducing a new Play Store policy that will effectively block third party call recording apps from the Play Store by May th according to a Reddit post seen by toGoogle Such apps currently use the Accessibility API designed for people with disabilities to gain access to the audio functions on Android devices nbsp quot Apps with a core functionality intended to directly support people with disabilities are eligible to use the IsAccessibilityTool quot the policy states quot Apps not eligible for IsAccessibilityTool may not use the flag and must meet prominent disclosure and consent requirements The Accessibility API is not designed and cannot be requested for remote call audio recording quot nbsp Google has gradually been trying to eliminate call recording on Android mainly due to privacy concerns It was largely blocked on Android and the use of the microphone for call recording was eliminated in Android The last resort for call recording apps was to use the Accessibility API nbsp Google addressed the issue in a webinar video saying that quot remote in this context refers to call audio recording where the person on the other end is unaware of the recording is taking place quot It added that dialer apps like Google Phone and Mi Dialer with native call recording functionality will be unaffected by the change nbsp quot If the app is the default dialer on the phone and also pre loaded accessibility capability is not required to get access to the incoming audio stream quot said Google content global operations lead Moun Choi quot Hence would not be in violation Since this is a clarification to an existing policy the new language will apply to all apps starting on May th quot It s not clear if the new policy means existing call recorder apps will be pulled from the Play Store |
