海外TECH DEV Community FAANG or Bust: My experience doing 4 software engineering internships at big tech companies https://dev.to/ashih2018/faang-or-bust-my-experience-doing-four-software-engineering-internships-at-different-big-tech-companies-5eil FAANG or Bust My experience doing software engineering internships at big tech companiesIntroductionLike many other students studying computer science when I was in my first year of undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto one of my biggest dreams was to work at a FAANG company FAANG is an acronym for Facebook Amazon Apple Netflix and Google and represents the big technology companies renowned for their technological prowess Disclaimer before readers get mad at me I have never interned at FAANG Facebook Amazon Apple Netflix Google before In I took a year off of my undergraduate studies to intern as a software engineer at four big technology companies Lyft Palantir Stripe and Citadel I believe my experiences at many of these companies align with what other interns working at FAANG companies experience BackgroundI currently attend the University of Toronto as an undergraduate studying computer science Like every other computer science student surrounding me I was fascinated by big tech in my first two years of undergraduate studies In my third year I managed to secure offers for software engineering internship positions at Lyft Amazon and Palantir After talking to many upper year students who have interned at FAANG they recommended I accept the Lyft offer for Summer and ask Palantir if I could push their offer to Fall or vice versa At the same time they recommended I take the entire next year off to find two more internships to work at rather than rushing to finish my degree I took their advice and worked at Lyft in the Summer and at Palantir in the Fall I applied for jobs while I was working at Palantir in the Fall and accepted software engineering intern offers from Stripe for the Spring of and Citadel for the Summer of My ExperienceLyft was my first big tech internship Before then I worked as a software engineer intern at smaller companies This internship was remote due to Covid as this took place in the Summer of During my internship I created a driver onboarding flow for livery drivers drivers that drive on behalf of other companies This was done by creating server side forms powered by Flask I also created a Flask API endpoint to automatically onboard new driving companies with Lyft Of the four internships I believe Lyft is my closest internship experience to FAANG Lyft is a large company with thousands of employees Coming into this internship I was scared of underperforming relative to other interns I had a large case of imposter syndrome and feared that I would not be able to successfully work on my project independently and ultimately not get a return offer I think Lyft was a great place for my first big tech internship Lyft s internship program was set up very well and provided a lot of mentorship and resources for their interns Lyft had many great programs set to reach out and connect with other software engineers and have coffee chats with them My project was not technically difficult but it involved writing several technical documents which I had never done before My second internship was in the Fall of at Palantir This was my first internship that was fully in person and I was able to travel to London UK for my entire internship I was a software developer in the resource management team for Foundry whose goal was to calculate the cloud usage for computing and storage across other teams My project was to create a Java pipeline powered by Apache Spark to calculate this information for Ontology a separate digital asset The biggest difference between this internship and my internship at Lyft was the difference in autonomy as a software engineer As mentioned previously Lyft had a great intern program that was focused on mentorship I was one of five interns due to being an off season internship and there was less focus on the internship program and more focus on working at Palantir as a full time software engineer As a result my mentor gave me more responsibility and freedom to experiment as a software engineer during my internship It resulted in an internship that was more technically difficult but one that I learned more from Although office presence was not mandatory I went to the office every day as I enjoyed the presence of working in person with my team and other teams surrounding me As a result I appreciated working in person versus working remotely and the collaborative efforts that came along with it I was pleasantly surprised at Palantir s friendly culture People took their lunch breaks off to talk spent their dinners together and even spent Friday nights at the open bar in the office singing karaoke and playing board games until midnight Palantir s London speakeasy will always hold a special place in my heart In the Spring of I worked at Stripe a financial services unicorn This was an in person internship in Seattle I worked on the Banking Platform team responsible for the migration of billions of dollars each day between client Stripe accounts and bank accounts This internship consisted of a short spin up project to get familiar with the codebase writing technical documentation for my project and the rest of my internship to complete the project My project was to redesign and implement the service responsible for generating reconciliation records documenting the daily money movement that our team s service handles from Ruby to Java Compared to my previous two internships this internship involved the most amount of technical documentation I spent nearly two weeks writing the documentation for my project and went back to revise it several times during my internship I was able to recognize the importance of high quality planning regarding design decisions and technical implementation for a large scale project and being able to iterate on feedback I originally thought the difficult part of the project was having to learn Ruby However scoping out my project was far more challenging There were several times when I wrote a piece of code and realized that what I was trying to do was not feasible after consulting a domain expert I also did not believe the city was an important decision prior to this internship when choosing a full time position After facing the constant grey weather and light rain lack of nightlife and steep inclines I realized that Seattle was the last on my list of cities I wanted to live in lots of nature though for nature lovers My final internship was in the Summer of at Citadel a hedge fund I worked on the Treasury team responsible for acquiring funds on behalf of Citadel and Citadel Securities so they can trade My project was to create a Java pipeline powered by Apache Kafka to enable the trading of billion USD equivalent per day with a new electronic securities trading platform Citadel is notorious for high compensation due to their long hours for software engineers Coming into my internship I have heard of previous interns at Citadel working hours a week Although I had told myself that I would not work more than hours a week I found myself working hours a week as my project was more ambitious than any other projects I have done at my previous internships I was fueled by wanting to learn and the motivation of completing my project The problem space I was in was more difficult than previous problem spaces I faced and found myself learning about the domain around me more than I had at previous internships Being in New York gave me a work hard play hard mentality where I would work from AM PM during the day and go out with friends afterward which I was perfectly fine with My TakeawaysIf you can take a semester off to do an internship I would strongly recommend doing it It might sound cheesy but I made some of my closest friends in my internships from different schools across Canada and United States Similar to dating if you only work at one company how do you know others aren t right for you Each of my four internships had distinct benefits that drew me to each company Lyft has great work life balance Palantir has strong friendly company culture Stripe is currently pre IPO and the domain space of financial technology is fascinating to me Citadel has very high compensation and brilliant engineers People saying you learn much more at internships than at school is BS or at least for me it was After my internships I felt that I had not learned much Sure I learned how to write good technical documents a couple of new languages and how to hold a minute coffee chat with a staff engineer but these skills didn t feel important to me I think studying computer science in my undergraduate degree was imperative to my performance at these companies From my university courses I learned strong programming fundamentals how to tackle complicated challenges and having a good work ethic in general The most valuable thing I learned from my internship experience was how to be adaptable and how to grep searching for code that you need very well My mentor at Palantir said One of the biggest parts of being a strong software engineer is learning to grep very well FAANG does not matter that much Yes it s a cliche statement and you ve probably heard it a million times but it s true It is true that you will get a lot of clout from telling family and friends who aren t in software that you work at Facebook However there are many other factors when it comes to choosing a place to work besides the brand name If you prefer having more autonomy as a software developer where you get to make more decisions early in your career you might prefer a smaller company If you appreciate the work life balance there are plenty of rest and vest companies Location is a very important decision in choosing a place to work at I ultimately chose Lyft over Amazon for my first internship due to the prospect of having more impact at a smaller company a more consumer facing product and because I liked their logo Before accepting any offers I would recommend speaking to people working at the companies to get a better perspective of what it s like working there Or better yet intern there if that s a possibility ConclusionAfter receiving return offers from all internships I worked at I decided to return to Citadel as a software engineer for my new grad offer Some of my friends call me a sellout but do other people s opinions of your job decision really matter I enjoyed my time working there I get to be in New York City the best city in the world I believe the culture is conducive to my learning and growth as a software engineer In the end tackling interesting and difficult problems and having a decent salary is all a software engineer can ask for so I am content with my decision Thanks for reading my rant Feel free to reach out to me via LinkedIn or email if you have any other questions 2022-12-01 17:33:47
海外TECH DEV Community AWS Credentials: from Environment Variables to credentials_process https://dev.to/herrvilla/aws-credentials-from-environment-variables-to-credentialsprocess-4gpn AWS Credentials from Environment Variables to credentials processIf you need to clarify what are the different kinds of AWS Credentials available how they re generated what they re used for and what are the best practices to manage them in a proper way I think you landed in the right spot Spoiler we re going to focus on programmatic access to AWS resources and or services Programmatic access means making programmatic calls to AWS via one of the available SDKs or by using the AWS Command Line Interface First of all let s start from a term Principal For those who never heard it let me quote the AWS Docs for you A principal is a person or application that can make a request for an action or operation on an AWS resource Every time you try to call an AWS API you ll meet a guardian on your way the AWS IAM authentication which authenticates AWS API requests The Principal authenticates himself as a root user or as an IAM entity i e an IAM User or an IAM Role A common best practice is to avoid using root user credentials Instead prefer IAM entities AWS IAM is able to authenticate API requests only if the required authentication information is present in the payload This authentication information is represented by a signature that is added to the API request in one of the following forms HTTP Authorization header or Query string parameters The signature is calculated through a mechanism called AWS Signature Version  SigV which uses the Access Keys associated with an IAM entity So what are Access Keys Access keys are IAM entity bound credentials used by clients to sign API requests for programmatic access A client can be either the AWS CLI AWS Tools for Windows Powershell AWS SDKs or an application that implements the SigV logic needed to add authentication information to the API requests If you are implementing an application that interfaces with AWS resources my suggestion is to avoid reinventing the wheel and rely on the SigV logic already encapsulated in the AWS SDKs unless you have to satisfy particular needs The Credential Provider ChainAs I stated before SigV uses Access Keys to compute the signature of an API request Therefore the previously described clients need to gather these credentials from somewhere before the API request is actually signed and sent In particular clients follow a systematic approach to search credentials in a pre defined set of sources This approach is called Credential Provider Chain The list of sources may vary depending on the specific AWS SDK so let s focus on the main ones environment variables Web Identity Token credentials the shared config and credentials files Amazon ECS container credentials instance profile credentials It is a chain in the sense that starting from the first source in the list the client checks for the presence of credentials the search stops as soon as a valid set of credentials was found Long term and temporary credentialsBefore diving into the different sources available in the Credentials Provider Chain it is important for you to know that there are two different kinds of credentials for programmatic access long term and short term or temporary ones Long term credentials consist of an access key id and a secret access key also called access keys You can think of the access key id as the username and the secret access key as the password Long term credentials allow you to access and authenticate yourself as a root user of an IAM User inside an AWS account Short term credentials come with two additional members a session token together with an expiration time Yes because short term credentials expire after a while as specified in the expiration member The main actions used to retrieve short term credentials are the following sts assumeRole sts assumeRoleWithSAML sts assumeRoleWithWebIdentity sts getFederationToken sts getSessionToken sso getRoleCredentials Each of these actions is associated with a different access method i e the pattern followed to perform a specific AWS action in a specific AWS account as a specific AWS IAM Entity AWS IAM User or AWS IAM Role We ll focus on access methods when talking about shared config and credentials files as these two topics are tangent In the meanwhile let me point out that it s a best practice to prefer short term credentials to long term ones as they limit the time window available to an attacker who stole them to perform malicious actions against your AWS resources Both types of credentials can be rotated for what concerns long term access keys rotating them means creating a new key pair access key id secret access key associated with an IAM User and deleting the old one On the other hand rotating short term credentials means creating new ones and exporting them to one of the available Credentials Provider Chain sources To be precise there is an exception you don t have to take charge of generating and rotating Amazon ECS container and instance profile credentials as they re sourced from an HTTP endpoint Now that you ve an idea of what long and short term credentials are and what are the main differences between them let s dive into Credentials Provider Chain sources starting from the environment variables as they re the first place clients look for credentials Credentials source environment variablesSimply put to make a client aware of credentials as environment variables you have to set the following ones AWS ACCESS KEY ID AWS SECRET ACCESS KEY AWS SESSION TOKEN The AWS SESSION TOKEN environment variable should be set only for temporary credentials Credentials source shared config and credentials fileIf the client does not find valid credentials in the previously cited environment variables it shifts the focus to the shared config and credentials file The shared config and credentials are yml files located under the aws folder Each of these files has its own purpose even if it is not always respected In particular the config file is designed to keep configuration data which is not sensitive on the other hand the credentials file is designed to keep secrets These responsibilities are not respected when we find secrets in the config file and configuration data in the credentials file When you run a command from the CLI it is executed under the scope of a specific Named Profile A Named Profile is a container for a specific set of configuration data and secrets Following the best practice cited before a Named Profile could span both config and credentials files In the credentials file a Named Profile can wrap the following secrets aws access key id aws secret access key aws session token only for temporary credentials In the config file for each Named Profile you can specify configuration data that allows you to describe the access method or in simple terms the pattern used to access services and resources in an AWS account The AWS account the request is forwarded to depends on the IAM entity IAM User or IAM Role you are authenticating as The IAM User access methodThe first access method that comes through my and maybe your mind is the IAM User Accessing an AWS account as an IAM User means providing at least aws access key id and aws secret access key to the aws credentials file I said “at least because you can get temporary credentials from an IAM User too using the sts getSessionToken action In this case the Named Profile associated with the IAM User should contain the aws session token secret too In this scenario in the config file I would put only the region and output fields Please remember to put them under the same Named Profile as the one used in the credentials file The Assume Role access methodThe second access method I want to describe is the one that expects an IAM Role to be assumed by another IAM entity You can describe this access pattern in the shared config file using the following two Named Profile fields source profile and role arn The source profile corresponds to the Named Profile that wraps the configuration data and secrets associated with the assumer IAM entity The role arn corresponds to the ARN of the IAM Role that is going to be assumed You ve to remember to set up a trust relationship between the assumer and the assumed IAM entities but that s another story Using this access method when you run an AWS CLI command using the Named Profile associated with the assumed IAM entity the CLI generates temporary credentials using the sts assumeRole action and caches them for future uses under the aws cli cache folder These cached credentials are refreshed as soon as a new AWS CLI command is run after the temporary credentials expiration time You can even chain multiple Named Profiles using this access method When it comes to assuming a role it is possible to provide an additional authentication info called external ID The external ID is a token shared between the AWS IAM entity and the client that wants to assume it This token is designed to overcome the Confused Deputy problem You can specify the external ID in the Named Profile external id field under the config file Another important configuration data that you can add to your Named Profile is the mfa serial if associated with the IAM User that is going to assume the IAM Role When you have to configure access to multiple AWS accounts using the Assume Role access pattern it becomes difficult to get rid of all the Named Profiles configuration data and relationships When you ve to deal with a complex access scenario tools like Leapp come to the rescue Leapp avoids you to specify relationships between Named Profiles in the config file as the access methods are stored in the tool specific configuration file Let s now move to AWS SSO AWS SSO access methodTo configure access to a specific IAM Role in an AWS account by the means of AWS SSO you ve to provide the following configuration data in the Named Profile sso start url the portal URL used to authenticate your client against AWS SSO uses OIDC authentication sso region the region in which AWS SSO was configuredsso account id the ID of the AWS account that I want to accesssso role name the name of the role that is going to be assumed in the AWS accountregion the region used by API requestsAWS CLI v supports AWS SSO and allows you to log into it through the following command aws sso login profile lt named profile gt This command starts an OIDC authentication flow that requires the user to interact with the browser by providing an authorisation code and granting credentials for the AWS CLI At this point the CLI will receive an AWS SSO access token that is cached under the aws sso cache folder This access token is then used by the CLI to invoke the sso getRoleCredentials action The new set of temporary credentials is then cached under the aws cli cache folder as for the Assume Role access method described before Instead of manually configuring a multitude of Named Profiles associated with different AWS SSO assumable IAM Roles you can specify your AWS SSO configuration data in Leapp once logged into AWS SSO it allows you to automatically provision all the IAM Roles that you can access you as the AWS SSO authenticated user Last but not least the credentials processcredentials process is a cool feature that allows clients to generate temporary credentials by the means of a third party CLI or command The credentials process is a configuration data field that should be defined in the shared config file under a specific Named Profile Using this mechanism you don t have to specify credentials in other places as the credentials process command becomes the credentials source It is important to make the credentials process command return the temporary credentials in the following format Version AccessKeyId an AWS access key SecretAccessKey your AWS secret access key SessionToken the AWS session token for temporary credentials Expiration ISO timestamp when the credentials expire credentials process comes in handy in particular situations that are not supported out of the box by the shared configuration and credentials files An example is the sts assumeRoleWithSAML action which requires the user to authenticate against an external SAML IdP once the user is authenticated the custom script should intercept the SAML Assertion returned at the end of the SAML authentication Then this SAML Assertion will be included in the sts assumeRoleWithSAML API request Leapp allows you to configure how you want to generate credentials By specifying “credential process method in its “AWS Credential Generation setting you re able to make Leapp generate temporary credentials by the means of its CLI through the credentials process field That s all Folks I hope you enjoyed this article and that you found interesting tips to improve your AWS CLI configuration and credentials file management If you want to share your thoughts about this article or more in general about AWS Credentials management please reach out to me through my Twitter profile We didn t cover every aspect of the Credentials Provider Chain so stay tuned for new articles about
