Windows 10 calendar hover effect using HTML, CSS, and vanilla JS |

Windows calendar hover effect using HTML CSS and vanilla JS Table of ContentsIntroductionObservationsGetting StartedFine Tuning Grid EffectAdditional Resources IntroductionWelcome back devs In this rd and final part of this series I will explain to you how you can create your own version of the windows calendar The implementation logic is similar to the grid hover effect logic So if at any point you feel as if you don t understand what s going on I recommend that you first read Part of this series and then return here With that said let us check the final output first This article is a little elaborative but that s for beginners if you are already good at JS and if you know the Grid hover logic you can quickly go through the code to understand what s going on ObservationsUndoubtedly the Grid hover effectis used here but more than one element s border is highlighted in each direction around the cursor i e element behind an element is also highlightedThe dates do not have Button hover effectThe grid hover effect does not apply to the active date today s date element The active Date has a gap between the border and background by default If some other date is selected the gap is eliminated Clicked date which is a non active date will have only a colored borderBorder of the active element is illuminated Getting StartedAs you might have guessed I will start with the grid effect code The First elements of the grid are week names and rest dates Since the calendar shows dates at once hence I have added win btn elements in win grid Some dates are inactive and one of them is active so I have added classes accordingly HTML lt html gt lt head gt lt title gt Windows calendar hover effect lt title gt lt head gt lt body gt lt h gt Windows Calendar hover effect lt h gt lt div class win grid gt lt p class week id gt Mo lt p gt lt p class week id gt Tu lt p gt lt p class week id gt We lt p gt lt p class week id gt Th lt p gt lt p class week id gt Fr lt p gt lt p class week btn inactive id gt lt div gt lt div gt lt body gt lt html gt Inside CSS we change the number of columns in the grid to and add the following classes win btn inactive win btn active win btn selected CSS import url Sans JP wght amp display swap box sizing border box important color white text transform capitalize important font family Noto Sans JP sans serif letter spacing px body background color black display flex flex flow column wrap justify content center align items center win grid border px solid white display grid grid template columns repeat fr grid gap rem align items stretch text align center padding rem cursor default win btn padding rem text align center border radius px border px solid transparent Today s Date win btn active background red Other Month s Date win btn inactive color fffffff Clicked Date win btn selected border px solid red button focus outline none And the JS code will be almost the same except for the win btn event listeners We don t need those anymore Also since we added more classes to the elements we cannot just directly compare the className in the grid hover event We need to check if the class exists in the element s classList JSconst offset const angles in degfor let i i lt i angles push i Math PI let nearBy function clearNearBy nearBy splice nearBy length forEach e gt e style borderImage null const body document querySelector win grid body addEventListener mousemove e gt const x e x x position within the element const y e y y position within the element clearNearBy nearBy angles reduce acc rad i arr gt const cx Math floor x the element if element style borderImage element style borderImage radial gradient offset px offset px at bx px by px rgba rgba transparent px px stretch return acc element return acc body onmouseleave e gt clearNearBy This is how our initial calendar looks like Fine Tuning Grid EffectAs you can see the grid effect works but we need to fix some bugs and do some state management Let us go through each bug and discuss its solution Problem Element very close to the cursor is not highlightedVery strange right When the cursor is very very close to an element its target is the win grid element only so ideally all the nearby elements must be highlighted But what is happening here can you guess the cause For those who still did not get it the offset value is larger than the nearby element and hence the element which is shown in blue is not getting highlighted To fix this we need to reduce the offset value to a closer one but if the offset is less than the element s dimensions how will it reach the nearby elements Solution What we can do is we can target points on each offset line instead of just targeting the endpoint The first point might be very near to the center and the second will be the endpoint only And while writing this article I just realized that there is room for some optimization also In grid effect we were calculating values according to my new approach we would have to calculate values As you can see we can skip some first point calculations i e the points that are near to the center and whose main purpose is to detect extremely nearBy elements So we will only calculate nearBy points hence total point calculations per mouse movement instead of Problem The gap between the border and background of active dateThis might not sound like a big problem but think about it How would you do it The most obvious thought that comes to our mind is that wrap each win btn element inside a div and apply border effects to the outer container element But doing this will increase the number of elements in our DOM moreover we will also have to change the elements which we are detecting in our code So every time we move the cursor we would get a nearby win btn element and then we would have to change the style of its parent Element We also need to add the scenario when the mouse moves over the container element and such minor event handling of new elements added to our DOM This way we are just adding more and more event listeners which can be avoided Solution There is a CSS property which helps us do exactly what we want It is called background origin According to MDN Docs The background origin CSS property sets the background s origin from the border start inside the border or inside the padding The default value is border box which means that the background starts from where the border ends We will use content box value because this will allow us to use the padding region of the box model as a gap between the border and the background Remaining logicNow the only thing remaining is the minor state handling for the selected date We need to remember the previously selected element so that when a new date is selected we first clear the border of the previous element and add then add the border to our new element What we will do is we will create a CSS class that has the border styling and add or remove the class from the element as required Clicked Date win btn selected border px solid red If any date other than the active date is selected the background of the active date expands till border like its usual behaviour So we will make a class for that also win btn active unselected which will change the background origin back to border box Today s Date when some other date is clicked win btn active unselected background origin border box The Final Code CSS import url Sans JP wght amp display swap box sizing border box important color white text transform capitalize important font family Noto Sans JP sans serif letter spacing px body background color black display flex flex flow column wrap justify content center align items center win grid border px solid white display grid grid template columns repeat fr grid gap rem align items stretch text align center padding rem cursor default win btn padding rem text align center border radius px border px solid transparent background origin body onmouseleave e gt clearNearBy Quick Code ExplanationInstead of converting degrees to radians I am directly calculating angles in radians PI PI PI PI The win btn s event handler takes care of the currently selected element One small change I have done here is that I use theclassListproperty to add and remove classes instead of manually changing the CSS styles using thestyle property because the properties we want to change have static values unlike border image which has radial gradient at the cursor position classList toggle The classList toggle method removes the class from the element if the nd argument evaluates to false else adds the class to the element Since at a given angle we check for elements at points on the offset line green lines in the figure above I store the offset values into an array called offsets I did this so that we can iterate over the values and check for an element at each value This way we can extend this method to calculate more than points and detect more elements for a particular angle value for this case offset values are fine So the offsets reduce method returns those elements only I have shifted the element selection and styling code inside the offsets reduce method only to avoid another iteration over elements just for styling them If there are no elements at a particular angle then the elements array will be empty Note The offset values I have used give an almost an original like effect and are trial and error based You can play around with those values to get the look you like Finally just add the elements into the accumulator and return Thank you With this we come to the end of this series of Recreating Windows EffectsFeel free to post suggestions doubts or any other feedback in the comment section below Also Building a PHP CMS from Scratch without a FrameworkPHP is used by of all the websites whose server side programming language we know However it can be particularly complicated to create a scaled CMS application without a framework Although using right design practices it is possible to implement a solution I built a complete blogging platform for users called LuminosityYou can inspect the code here as you read along DesignThe project implements MVC Model View Controller design pattern The project has been built upon a Custom Framework Model view controller usually known as MVC is a software design pattern commonly used for developing user interfaces that divides the related program logic into three interconnected elements This is done to separate internal representations of information from the ways information is presented to and accepted from the user ModelThe Model component corresponds to all the data related logic that the user works with This can represent either the data that is being transferred between the View and Controller components or any other business logic related data For example a Customer object will retrieve the customer information from the database manipulate it and update it data back to the database or use it to render data ViewThe View component is used for all the UI logic of the application For example the Customer view will include all the UI components such as text boxes dropdowns etc that the final user interacts with ControllerControllers act as an interface between Model and View components to process all the business logic and incoming requests manipulate data using the Model component and interact with the Views to render the final output For example the Customer controller will handle all the interactions and inputs from the Customer View and update the database using the Customer Model The same controller will be used to view the Customer data A common example is ASP NET MVC Project Structureapp Contains Backend and Application LogicConfig Contains Config Files for projectLibraries Contains Basic Libraries extended by classes and units Look at Core php for routing based on request URIControllersAjax Controllers gt Internal API request logicController Traits gt Config values for controller logicView Controllers gt Setup View with data based on request MethodHelpers Helper Files for common methods used accross applicationSQL Contains SQL Dump and Procedures for ModelsViews Each Controller has a seperate view folder containing files for a specific view default index Vendor Packages used in PHPBootstrap php Load Configs Start Session and intanstiate autoloader publicApplication frontendIndex php is entry fileroot htaccessRoute requests through public folder FeaturesFeatures Read Articles of various topicsUse a Web Friendly interface to create postsComment and React on PostsBookmark and save articles Customize ProfileSite wide Dark Mode optionUser Interface Setting up LocallyIt is very easy to setup Luminosity locally if you have worked with xampp or any other stack Follow the given steps to test Luminosity locally Clone project in htdocs directory using git clone git github com cmdBOT Luminosity gitYour directory should look like C xampp or any other stack htdocs LuminosityCheck public htaccess so that project directories matchCreate Database in MySQL and load SQL dump sqlSetup app configs in Config ConfigDefault php Next rename to Config php Refer to IP Quality Score and Cloudinary to setup APIsBe sure to fill all configs carefully to prevent unexpected errors Be sure to star the repository and follow me on Github |

What are AWS Lambda triggers? |
https://dev.to/dashbird/what-are-aws-lambda-triggers-1dhh
|
What are AWS Lambda triggers This is a basic introduction to Lambda triggers that uses DynamoDB as an event source example We talk a lot about the more advanced level of Lambda triggers in our popular two part series Complete Guide to Lambda Triggers If you want to learn more read part one and part two We re going back to the basics this time because skipping some steps when learning something new might get you confused It tends to get annoying or it can even make you frustrated Why To understand how something works appropriately and later on to know how to apply your knowledge practically without stress you must master the particular subject in a particular order Let me put it this way you can t calculate how fast is a subatomic particle moving in space if it s lightyears away from the closest planet if you don t know the basic math like times right So back to our topic here what are AWS Lambda triggers Lambda Triggers Explained with DynamoDB IntegrationDynamoDB is an AWS product just like Lambda and therefore you re able to create triggers with ease Triggers are pieces of code that will automatically respond to any events in DynamoDB Streams Triggers allow you to build applications that will then react to any data modification made in DynamoDB tables By enabling DynamoDB Streams on a table you will be able to associate an ARN with your Lambda function Instantly after an item in the table is modified a new record will appear in the table s stream When AWS Lambda detects a new stream record it will invoke your Lambda function synchronously Lambda functions can perform any actions you specify like sending notifications or a workflow initiation An example suppose you have a mobile gaming app that s writing on a GameScores table Each time the TopScore attribute of the GameScores table is updated a corresponding stream record will be written to the table s stream You can then set a Lambda function to post a message on social media sites once the event is triggered Event Driven Lambda And How To Trigger ItFor Lambda functions to execute an event must occur think If Then If an event happens then it will trigger Lambda Until recently our knowledge of triggering Lambda functions was based on API Gateway as a trigger but more AWS resources can trigger your Lambda functions Events can be anything happening with the resources within your AWS account Did somebody write a record to DynamoDB This can trigger a Lambda function Did someone upload a file to S This can be a Lambda trigger too Lambda Triggering Another Lambda A Bad Decision You can even call Lambda functions from other Lambda functions But this is generally seen as bad practice If you don t finish your Lambda before you start the next one you pay for both running The first one that is waiting for the second one and the second one Think about optimizing your lambdas for performance and cost You should always put another service between your Lambda functions and don t call them directly SQS SNS and Step Functions are good ways to connect your Lambda functions without paying for two invocations at once How to Trigger a Lambda Manually If you ever want to trigger lambdas manually then simply create an event using one of the AWS resources How to Trigger a Lambda Function Common Ways To Trigger LambdaTo trigger a lambda function you can choose between many different ways The most common ways are API Gateways S and DynamoDB table streams API GatewayAPI Gateway event is one way to trigger Lambda These events are considered synchronous events Simply put it means that when somebody is calling an API Gateway it will trigger your Lambda function It s a synchronous event because your Lambda function has to respond to the client directly at the end of its invocation For Lambda to know which kind of event will trigger it you need to define it in the configuration or or serverless yml if you re using the Serverless Framework SS events occur when someone or something modifies the content of an S bucket Altering the content can be achieved by either creating removing or updating a file While you re defining an event you re able to specify what sort of action will trigger the lambda function whether it s creating removing or updating a file S events are asynchronous which means your Lambda function only has to handle the event and doesn t have to respond with anything There is no client involved like with API Gateway so nobody is waiting for your function to send a response S will send an event that triggers your Lambda function but it won t check what it did afterward DynamoDB Table StreamsDynamoDB events will be explained shortly but first let s start with DynamoDB table streams A DynamoDB table stream is like a line or a queue through which the data flows In this particular case the data is actually the change made to a specific table This means that when someone updates a record in a specific DynamoDB table it will instantly publish all of these changes in a stream and it further implies that the Lambda function will be triggered because there is data in the stream This way is a little bit more complicated since we need to connect the Lambda function to a DynamoDB stream When there is data in the stream there are two different ways Lambda will get triggered by it First when there is any kind of data in the stream which means a single change to the database at a certain time the lambda will be executed only once The second way table streams trigger Lambda functions is when there is a batch of events in the stream all processed together This way saves the execution time a lot since processing streams are pretty fast Like S events table stream events are asynchronous so you don t have to send a response from your Lambda function They differ from S events in their second way to trigger Lambda functions which allows you to batch multiple DynamoDB changes into one Lambda event Bonus List of Lambda Event SourcesHere is a small list of AWS services that can trigger events for AWS Lambda Let s start with the synchronous event sources These require your Lambda function to return a response when it s finished This is because the service that triggered the event sends the response to a client or uses it to check if the event was handled successfully Elastic Load Balancing Application Load Balancer Amazon Cognito Amazon connect Amazon Lex Amazon Alexa Amazon API Gateway Amazon CloudFront Lambda Edge Amazon Kinesis Data Firehose Amazon Simple Storage Service BatchAnd now the services that trigger asynchronous events These are simply fire and forget the services that triggered the events don t care if your Lambda function handled them correctly If you need retry logic you have to implement it yourself with the help of SQS or Step Functions Amazon Simple Storage Service Amazon Simple Notification Service Amazon Simple Email Service AWS CloudFormation Amazon CloudWatch Logs Amazon CloudWatch Events AWS CodeCommit AWS Config AWS IoT AWS IoT Events AWS CodePipeline ConclusionAWS Lambda triggers are merely actions caused by specific AWS resources these actions generate events that will further execute Lambda functions that listen to them AWS Lambda is an event based system Lambda functions are associated with events that are triggered by other AWS resources like API Gateway S or DynamoDB Lambda functions will always react to these events Once you have finished reading about triggers you will probably start to wonder about the observability aspect of your serverless app or to put it better the lack thereof You wouldn t be the first one to think like that but luckily several services can help you in that regard Dashbird can help you monitor your AWS Lambdas with an all in one easy to understand dashboard Set up alerts get insights on what to improve and keep track of costs without adding any strain to your application You can sign up right now to start monitoring your serverless app for free No code changes and no credit card required Further reading The Complete AWS Lambda Handbook for Beginners part Using Lambda Layers for Better Serverless ArchitectureMonitoring Challenge 2: Add SQS + S3 Event Triggers for Lambda Apps |
https://dev.to/raphael_jambalos/challenge-2-add-sqs-s3-event-triggers-for-lambda-apps-3ian
|
Challenge Add SQS S Event Triggers for Lambda Apps Quick RecapIn the previous post we have created a simple loyalty application It can create and display loyalty cards Your next challengeThe loyalty application you have made was a big hit New user s enrollment is now at an all time high However your old users are complaining They still are using the old paper based system and they refused to enroll as new users unless the points from their old loyalty card can be migrated to the new loyalty card system that you created The restaurants have a backlog of paper loyalty cards to be migrated to the new system With a booming business they can only do a day and your loyal customers are already complaining To help them your boss volunteered you ugh I know right to create a new module for the application The staff will just encode the paper loyalty cards in a CSV file And you will just collect the CSV file and upload it to S The new module will read the contents and create a unique loyalty card for each one and still maintain the points SpecificationIn order to do this you will have to Create an S bucket in your AWS AccountCreate a new lambda function L Lambda functions are off by default and are triggered by events In the previous challenge it was triggered by an API call For this function it is triggered by a file upload to an S bucket Once the file is uploaded in your S bucket a Lambda function is triggered In the event object of the Lambda function the S bucket and the file key of the file uploaded is given Use this information to download and read the file line by line Each line is created one job in an SQS queue An SQS queue is sort of like a line in a bank If we have a file with rows we would have jobs lined up for processing in the SQS queue Each job is represented by a JSON object sent to SQS The contents of the JSON object is the values of the row A sample job would look like card number first name Raphael last name Jambalos points At the end of the line is a teller processing the requests one after the other For this we create another Lambda function L L takes a request from SQS It receives a JSON object that has information about the job With this information create a loyalty card in your DynamoDB database HintsFor L you can begin by connecting the L to the S bucket by setting up its event property For an example start hereFor L you can begin by configuring the L function to connect to the SQS queue For an example you can start here This example automatically triggers a Lambda function when a request arrives in SQS ResourcesServerless Example for SQS L NodeJS Python Serverless Example for S L NodeJS Show off your work Comment a screencap of your work below Or better yet create a blog post here in dev to explaining how you did it If you have any questions or are stuck somewhere comment below or send me a pm and I d be happy to help you Photo by Tim Gouw on Unsplash |

UK to decide whether Google tracking case can go to trialThe UK s Supreme Court is to hear evidence alleging that Google bypassed security settings in Safari to gather sensitive information about users to sell to advertisers The court is not set to hear the case itself but rather to determine from the evidence whether the complainant Richard Lloyd will be allowed to bring the case to court at all The dispute primarily concerns a claim that Google had intentionally worked around security settings in Safari in one that blocked third party tracking cookies used for advertising among other potential purposes The UK s High Court had initially dismissed the case as they had determined it would be too difficult to assess how many people had been affected Read more |
