Adventures in Scale: Google is Tech’s Lewis and Clark |
https://dev.to/linearb/adventures-in-scale-google-is-tech-s-lewis-and-clark-3k3k
|
Adventures in Scale Google is Tech s Lewis and ClarkTo call Google a titan of the tech industry would be an understatement Their name has become synonymous with the internet itself The very act of retrieving information from the internet ーthe core functionality of the internet and its most basic purpose ーis known simply as “Googling something On their road to becoming the web s biggest search engine and a moniker for the internet itself Google also pioneered much of what it takes to grow a company at scale On the Dev Interrupted Podcast Google Senior Engineer s Hyrum Wright and Titus Winters shared their lessons learned from programming at Google with LinearB Co Founder and COO Dan Lines Both engineers have a deep understanding of the principles behind software development Hyrum is semi famous as the “Hyrum of Hyrum s Law while Titus is responsible for million lines of code that over developers work on But what lessons can we take from their interview ーand their book Software Engineering at Google Lessons Learned from Programming Over Time How can we apply those lessons to our own projects I ve pulled out the core takeaways from their interview and condensed them so that any developer or company be they responsible for lines of code or can learn something from Google s roadmap Why listen to GoogleIn spite of their enormous success and scale Google doesn t pretend to have all the answers this lack of presumption is exactly the thinking that has made them the titan they are Previous success is no guarantee of future success and no one understands this better than Google One thing that Google is very good at is not accepting how everyone else does it as the one true way ーTitus Winters on the Dev Interrupted podcast at It s easy to assume that events and conclusions are foregone or that one event naturally follows another Yet this is rarely the case Most of the time people are working towards a specific outcome and it s not until later that the outcome is apparent contextually This is true in life and software development Google has spent the past couple decades approaching everything they do as trial and error learning what does and does not work and trying to institutionalize the things that do work This is not a straight path This mindset is obvious in Hyrum and Titus interview Titus uses the analogy of Lewis and Clark to explain how the software development process at Google has unfolded “They say Lewis and Clark explored the Louisiana Purchase by which we mean they took one path out and one path back which is not exactly mapping but in a similar way we re trying to give an exploration trip report map ーTitus Winters on the Dev Interrupted podcast at He s admitting that Google doesn t have all of the answers that Google s path isn t the only path to success that other paths may be superior to Google s and that their path may not work for every business But with decades of experience Google has learned a thing or two along the way and maybe just maybe we can all learn something from the path they have trailblazed After all there aren t many companies in the world that have hundreds of millions of lines of code The Pillars of Software Engineering at Google“Anyone can change a line of code or change lines of code But how about changing lines of code or lines of code in a reasonable time ーHyrum Wright on the Dev Interrupted Podcast at With so much code to manage Google has made maintaining their code a strategic goal Code must be fresh and able to sustain changes to the code base for business or technical reasons To best allow for this they have identified concepts that they believe are core to software engineering TimeAll of the hardest stuff that software engineers are going to have to deal with like skew version backwards compatibility issues with data storage dependency management upgrades and many more are all problems created by time Once dev teams realize this it will change their perspective on how best to write code For instance if you are going to get rid of your code within one or two years then you probably don t need to worry too much about making changes or upgrades to it in the future But if you are going to write code that will remain in use after five or ten years then you may want to approach it differently If dev teams want their code base to last they need to think about constructing code so that it can sustain changes within an organization s lifespan This fundamental realization allows time to peacefully coexist with the second pillar ScaleHow your system scales is a relationship with time Scaling isn t a new problem and Google has been at the forefront of pushing scale their entire existence For instance email existed before Gmail and search engines existed before Google but Google s brilliance was their ability to scale these technologies better than their competitors It s the root of their success To beat their competitors they adopted a mindset of scaling as a process ーa continual evolution As a company grows all of its operations expand and that continued expansion requires more resources which begets even more resources still This means growth cannot occur superlinearly because if it does eventually a company will consume all of its resources maintaining the status quo The key takeaway is to make sure your codebase and software both scale sublinearly that way if your codebase doubles or triples you won t need six times as many engineers just to maintain your systems Sublinear scaling refers to team growth that occurs more slowly than the number of supported services of a company Superlinear growth is the opposite ーwith team growth outpacing the number of supported services Trade offs and CostsAfter taking into consideration the best practices around time and scale what is left is good decision making Just as Hyrum and Titus note in their book “in software engineering as in life good choices lead to good outcomes However no organization has perfect data on which to base every decision and therefore must strive to make the best decisions they can with the most data possible People need insights into what an organization finds impactful For instance if an engineer spends a week on a project it should probably be a project the organization considers a priority Because if it is not then no matter how perfect the code it probably wasn t the best use of the engineer s time Brain power should be devoted to the most difficult problems not where a semicolon should be placed The cost of incorrectly evaluating trade offs is failing the st two pillars Coming HomeWhile Hyrum and Titus may not be Lewis and Clark reborn they have a valuable story to tell about trial and error in the Information Age How a company scales is likely to define how it differentiates itself from its competitors and whether or not it will be successful A company that can scale sublinearly will thrive all others will stagnate as victims of their own success Minding the principles of these modern day explorations into the wilderness of code will help any organization keep an eye on the most valuable resource time But remember just as Lewis and Clark found one path forward they didn t find the only path forward We can all learn something from Google but never forget the path forward is your own For more lessons in scaling and growth consider registering for INTERACT Dev Interrupted s biggest event yet The interactive community driven digital conference takes place September th Designed by engineering leaders Cryptography and Ciphers explained |

|
Cryptography and Ciphers explained PrefaceDo you know what is used in emails messages and video chats for privacy Do you know what is used as the underlying structure of the blockchain which is powering cryptocurrency It is Cryptography IntroductionA cipher is an algorithm that can encode plaintext into unreadable text and to decode the unreadable text back into readable text For a specific text you will have to use the same cipher for encoding and decoding of the text They are used for safe information transfers Table of ContentsIntroductionTable of ContentsHistoryTypes of CryptographySymmetric Key cryptographyUsesAdvantagesBlock CiphersStream CipherAsymmetric Key CryptographyUsesRSAExampleAdvantages HistoryCiphers were used long before the information age like the substitution cipher whose decoding was done by substituting letters following a certain pattern The pattern was chosen by the encoder Transposition cipher was also used before the information age to decode a string encoded with transposition cipher one had to shift the positions of letters None of the old ciphers were cryptographically secure except for the one time pad now called One Time Password cipher It is a single use pre shared key used to decode the messages it is nowadays used in authentication see CRA Types of CryptographyThere are two types of cryptography symmetric key cryptography and asymmetric key cryptography Symmetric Key cryptographySymmetric key algorithms are algorithms for cryptography that use the same encryption keys for both the encryption of plaintext and the decryption of corresponding ciphertext Symmetric key algorithms use stream ciphers or block ciphers UsesUsed in HTTPS protocolPayment Banking Applications to authenticate transactionsused in data centres and servers to encrypt the data which is at rest AdvantagesFaster than asymmetric key cryptography because there is only one key in playBetter performance because of less calculations being performed As they are quicker they are optimized for handling large amounts of data Easier to set up and implement Block CiphersThey are encryption algorithms that take an input message and a key to generate a new encrypted cipher text and then it uses the cipher text and the same key to decrypt the message It encrypts blocks of data of fixed size at a time The size of the block depends on the size of the key The data to be encrypted is divided into blocks of equal size The encryption and the decryption algorithm accept two inputs an input of size n bits and a key of size k bits and returns a n bit output The decryption algorithm is the inverse function to encryption decryption encryption Block cipher encryptions are just permuntations of the plain text by the key Eac key selects one permutation from the set of k permutations There are infinite number of permutations keys We do not encrypt the data using s of keys because that is very expensive and time consuming Block Ciphers are very safe for secure data transfers they are also used in cryptographic protocols Popular block ciphers are AES DES and DES Block ciphers are slower but they are more secure and are the industry standard The process of encryption using block ciphers is as follows each block gt corresponding encryption key gt corresponding encryption block gt combined binary text gt decimal or hexadecimal cipher Stream CipherStream cipher is a type of cipher that encrypts one bit at a time It is a quicker format of encryption considering that it does not have to encrypt large blocks at a time In stream ciphers data is converted to binary digits and encrypted sequentially each binary digit is encrypted one after other Popular stream cipher algorithms include RC and Salsa The process of encrypting data using stream cipher is as follows plain text gt binary data gt algorithmic function f x using random encryption key gt decimal or hexadecimal data ciphertext Asymmetric Key CryptographyAsymmetric key algorithms are algorithms for cryptography that use different keys for encryption and decryption of data It follows the concept of public keys known to everyone and private keys known to nobody except the owner Using this type of cryptography the sender first encrypts the original text using a public key and then sends the encrypted text to the receiver The receiver decrypts the cipher using his private key The public key can be shared with anyone who wants to send you a message whereas the private key should not be shared with anybody In asymmetric key cryptography unlike symmetric key cryptography the sender does not need to send the key to the receiver Asymmetric key cryptography resolves the risk of key sharing in a dangerous network in which the third party can intercept the key It is impossible to create duplicate keys as the private and public keys are mathematically connected Popular assymetric key cryptography algorithms include RSA and DSA UsesUsed in SSH protocolUsed in mailing protocols like iMapUsed in blockchainUsed in digital signatures to maintain the authenticity of documentsUsed for sharing keys for symmetric key cryptography RSAIt is the most widely used Assymetric algorithm It is named after its founders Ron Rivest Adi Shamir and Leonard Adleman It uses block ciphers to obsure the data It is used on the web by VPNs emails and GitHub ExampleEmails use Assymetric key cryptography our email address is the public key which is available publicly to everybody whereas the credentials to log into our email are private using which only the owner of the mail can read the mails AdvantagesNo need of any reliable key sharing channel it was a risk in symmetric key cryptographyLonger keys which increase the security like bit keys and bit keysUsed for proof of authenticity of the owner as he only possesses the private key If a third party modifies the ciphertext generated by the public key the private key would not be able to decrypt the text and even if it does it would be easy to identify the discrepancy |

IKEA will sell clean energy to Swedish homesIKEA won t just sell you smart lights ーit ll soon sell you the electricity to power those lights provided you live in the right country Electreknotes that IKEA has revealed plans to sell clean energy to Swedish homes through a Strömma subscription service Pay the as yet unmentioned fee and you ll get certified solar or wind generated electricity with usage you can track through a mobile app The home furnishings giant didn t say whether it would expand the clean energy sales to other countries although it hoped to let people quot use and generate quot renewable energy in quot all our Ingka Group markets quot by The company already sells solar panels The retailer is no stranger to eco friendly efforts It stopped selling non LED lights and will soon drop non rechargeable alkaline batteries It s even planning to turn a Swedish city into a sustainable community And there s little doubt this will help burnish IKEA s public image It can address concerns about the chain s environmental impact by serving as a clean energy source It s still a significant move though and we wouldn t be surprised if other larger stores followed suit It s not just a feel good effort that could reduce emissions ーsales of excess clean energy could recoup costs and boost profits |

Pixel 5a review: The 4a 5G wasn't broken, so Google didn't fix it |
https://www.engadget.com/google-pixel-5-a-review-android-midrange-5g-smartphone-160051630.html?src=rss
|
Pixel a review The a G wasn x t broken so Google didn x t fix itThe Pixel is just around the corner But before Google brings it and its Tensor mobile chip to market the company is updating its entry level offering with the Pixel a The whole point of the “a family is to offer the basics at a reasonable price without sacrificing too much of the Pixel experience in the process That means a relatively clean version of Android with a bunch of AI tricks and a heavy focus on photography But apparently Google feels like it more or less nailed that formula with the Pixel a G because the a is basically the same phone Note The Pixel a is not a direct successor to the a which was a much smaller device There are some differences ーnotably the addition of IP waterproofing ーbut most of the tweaks are extremely minor Even the processor and RAM haven t changed So if we said you could do better way back in October of what does that mean for the a in the fall of Well it makes the Pixel a about as unexciting as a phone can be for one But look boring isn t necessarily bad Especially when you re talking about the mid and lower tiers of the smartphone market For one keeping things staid allows Google to focus its efforts on battery life and performance optimization And just like the last generation of Pixels the a feels pretty responsive despite the aging Snapdragon G inside That said the G wasn t exactly top of the line last year and it s starting to show its limits While scrolling through the UI and doing simple things like reading email and sending text messages the a is indistinguishable from any flagship device It even handles most mobile games without a hiccup I spent some time playing The Elder Scrolls Blades and Wild Castle and the phone barely broke a sweat But I did notice it stutter a few times while navigating YouTube editing photos and jotting down my thoughts for this review in Evernote The latter I could easily chalk up to Evernote s questionable development over the last few years but the pauses while switching to fullscreen in YouTube and swapping filters in Google Photos are a bit more concerning Terrence O Brien EngadgetThe plus side of going with something a bit older and lower powered not to mention with an integrated G modem is power efficiency The a G was already something of a beast lasting over hours in our battery drain test before our reviews editor Cherlynn Low simply gave up and moved on with her life That device had a mAh battery The a has a mAh cell It took hours and of playing a video on loop at brightness before it finally powered down After hour of heavy usage ーplaying games repeatedly running G speed tests installing apps watching videos on YouTube and even letting it play sleep sounds overnight ーthe battery was still at percent It didn t finally crap out until almost AM on day two And if you turn on Extreme Battery Saver things could get even more absurd I m fairly confident that under normal use you could get a full hours out of the Pixel a before needing to find an outlet Battery life isn t the only difference between the a and a G The new phone is also IP rated for water and dust resistance At a time when many smartphones have at least some form of water resistance the Pixel a G was sort of a disappointment In fact the lack of waterproofing was one of the big cons called out in our review But the Pixel a should easily survive getting caught in the rain or if you drop it in a toilet It can withstand being submerged in water up to one meter deep for minutes but I wouldn t push this to its limits Definitely don t go swimming with it in your pocket Terrence O Brien EngadgetThe last difference between the Pixel a and the a G is in the size and construction but it s subtle The a has a metal unibody as opposed to a polycarbonate one The texture is still matte and similar to the softtouch of the previous models though and the upgrade to Gorilla Glass from Gorilla Glass is notable but you ll never notice the difference in daily use The a comes in one finish Mostly Black Some might find the look a little dull and it s certainly on the utilitarian side but I quite liked the feel of the phone The finish is a nice contrast to the seemingly endless sea of smooth glassy surfaces and the heft is just right too The a is ever so slightly larger and heavier but you re talking about a few millimeters and grams Even if you had a Pixel a G in one hand and a Pixel a in the other you d be hard pressed to figure out which is which The change in size mostly comes down to the slightly larger screen The OLED panel on the a is inches versus inches on the a G Otherwise though the screens are basically the same The increased resolution of x makes up for the size difference so they both have a density of ppi Both also sport a contrast ratio of and support HDR and are stuck at now outdated Hz And both are just bright enough to use in direct sunlight though high brightness mode is definitely a necessity if you re watching a video outdoors Even the holepunch for the front facing camera is in the same place That said I appreciated Google s “for fun wallpapers that camouflage the hole by incorporating it into the design My favorite is the record player where the camera becomes the hole at the center of an LP That megapixel front facing camera by the way is one of the weak points of the a It does the job in perfect lighting and for video calls But details can be a bit soft in low light it gets noisy and portrait mode is hit or miss Overall I found Google s portrait feature to be a bit too aggressive even on the main camera You can easily adjust the blur and depth after the fact but the default settings could stand to be more subtle The selfie cam though is the same one found on the Pixel a G so none of this is a surprise In fact all of the cameras are the same The two sensors around the rear however are much better than the one on the front There s a megapixel main shooter with optical image stabilization and a megapixel ultra wide angle lens They have a somewhat “moody vibe when compared to shots from an iPhone or a Galaxy device but they re not obviously inferior And even though images taken with the wide angle lens can get a little fuzzy if you start zooming in on details Google s processing does an admirable job of minimizing barrel distortion Google isn t at the top of the smartphone camera heap anymore but it s not far off and photography is still an undeniable strong suit of the Pixel family Terrence O Brien EngadgetThere s nothing new to report though It s the same set of excellent photography features that you got last year Portrait lighting can help clean up and add some contrast to photos of people but sadly not pets ーthe option only appears if a human face is detected Night Sight turns on automatically in dim lighting and at times produces mind blowing results And the video stabilization modes are excellent Cinematic Pan which combines slow motion with super smooth movement is especially fun Also just like every other “a model Pixel this one has a headphone jack All I can say is That s great now please bring the headphone jack back to flagship phones I know I m not the only person clamoring for it And it drives me nuts that the only way to get an old school mm jack on my phone is to go down market Terrence O Brien EngadgetOne last thing to mention The actual full name of the phone is the Pixel a with G So guess what it supports G connectivity That s not really surprising since the Snapdragon G has an integrated G modem Unlike the Pixel a G however there is no mmWave variant of the a And although technically it s capable of C Band support it s currently not enabled and Google wouldn t commit to adding support in the future That s not a huge deal at the moment since there are no active C Band networks in the US yet But it might irk some when AT amp T and Verizon start flipping the switch likely sometime later this year That said full C Band rollout isn t expected to happen until at least late Those caveats out of the way G still seems stuck in a state of arrested development I tested the Pixel a using Google Fi which essentially means I was on T Mobile s network and speeds were all over the place In my home it was often slower than Verizon s LTE network averaging around mbps down Note Verizon is Engadget s parent company…for now But two and half miles up the road at a local Subaru dealership I was routinely getting over mbps down topping out at mbps Terrence O Brien EngadgetOf course G and excellent cameras aren t a rarity at this price any more Mid tier phones have come a long way over the last few years The problem for Google is it no longer clearly “owns the midrange Part of that is down to price While the a is cheaper than the a G it s not the obvious bargain that the a was at If it was even just cheaper still the a would be a much easier sell at The Samsung A G is slightly more expensive at though regularly on sale for less and has a slower Snapdragon G SoC But its Super AMOLED screen clearly outclasses the Pixel s and has a Hz refresh rate Plus its camera system is much sharper and feature packed but that doesn t necessarily mean “better In addition to a primary camera and ultra wide shooter there s a macro lens and a depth sensor that helps with portrait mode While both the A and a ship with GB of storage the Samsung has an advantage in that it has a microSD card slot Then there s the OnePlus Nord N G It has a trio of cameras around the back including a megapixel primary sensor an AMOLED screen with a Hz refresh rate and up to GB of RAM Then again it has a MediaTek processor which you rarely see in phones in the US and with good reason They re not exactly known for their high end performance But perhaps more importantly you re highly unlikely to be making a choice between the Nord N and the Pixel a since the former isn t available in the US and the later is only available in the US and Japan Of course if you re more of an iOS fan the obvious comparison would seem to be the iPhone SE It s the same price as the Pixel a for a GB model but it does feel quite a bit dated It still uses the old iPhone form factor with a Touch ID home button instead of Face ID it s positively miniscule at inches and doesn t support G Frankly if you re dead set on iOS I might suggest saving your pennies and springing for the iPhone mini So no Google doesn t “own the midrange any more The Pixel a is almost aggressively boring but it s not bad If you want the Pixel experience and don t want to break the bank this is the way to go But if you re just looking for the best bang for your buck the choice is far less clear |
