Easy Automatic Code Deployment With Git IntroductionI will show you how to deploy code to a live server easily with Git Let s say you have already deployed your project to a live server A few days later you receive valuable feedback on your project from another developer You decide to make some improvements to the project You work in your local Git repository to make the changes You test everything to make sure it is working the way you intended it to work Then you commit the changes in your code to your local Git repository Then you push those changes to Github How do you go about getting those improvements to the live server Would you log into the server and meticulously edit the file manually There is an easy way to deploy code to a live server use Git All you need it is the ability to SSH to the server Here is the syntax for the git push command git push lt repository gt lt branch name gt Example git push origin mainThe origin is first repository that is set up and usually represents the repository connected to the Github website To get code to a live server I will create a second repository on the live server to push code to I will call the second repository prod to represent the repository on the live production server After pushing code to the origin repository I will be able to push to prod any code ready for production When I am ready to push code to the production server I run this command git push prod main On the server Set up a repository on the server The first step to set this up is to create a bare repository on the web server where you will run the application SSH to your server My server has the user brandon and the IP address So I use this command ssh brandon Create a directory for the project sudo mkdir var www my project repo Set the permissions on the directory sudo chown USER USER var www my project repoThen move into the directory like this cd var www my project repo Create the directory for the actual project with a git extension sudo mkdir my project git Move into the my project git directory cd my project git Set up the directory as a Git bare repository git init bareThe directory structure should look like Wind and solar could meet percent of current US electricity needsWind and solar power could meet around percent of US electricity needs according to a paper published in Nature Communications Batteries capacity overbuilding and other storage options could increase that figure A blend of wind and solar power should be enough to meet most of the current energy needs in quot advanced industrialized nations quot according to the study Researchers from the University of California Irvine UCI China s Tsinghua University the Carnegie Institution for Science and Caltech looked at years of hourly energy demand data from countries to determine whether there s enough wind and solar resources to meet requirements They found that most reliable systems in which wind power is most prevalent can meet energy needs in the countries they studied between and percent of the time and that s before any storage considerations Add the capacity to store up to hours worth of energy and these renewable energy sources can meet between and percent of hourly energy needs However the researchers noted even when wind and solar sources can power over percent of a region s energy needs there would still be hundreds of hours per year where demand isn t met “Wind and solar could meet more than percent of demand in many places without crazy amounts of storage or excess generating capacity which is the critical point co author Steven Davis professor of Earth system science at UCI said “But depending on the country there may be many multi day periods throughout the year when some demand will need to be met by energy storage and other non fossil energy sources in a zero carbon future There are geophysical challenges at play The paper suggests it would be easier for larger countries closer to the equator to fully switch to sustainable power sources since they can more reliably bank on having solar energy all year long Germany for instance might struggle to meet most of its needs through wind and solar since it s a relatively smaller country at a higher latitude One solution would be for neighboring countries to pool their resources quot A lot of consistency and reliability could be provided by a system that includes solar resources from Spain Italy and Greece with bountiful wind available in the Netherlands Denmark and the Baltic region quot Dan Tong assistant professor of Earth system science at Tsinghua University and lead author on the paper said Many countries are cutting back on their reliance on fossil fuels which is key to mitigating carbon emissions and limiting the impact of climate change Europe generated more electricity from renewable sources in than it did from fossil fuels according to a report from two green energy focused think tanks |

Monitor Your Pet x s Health with Litter Exporter A Prometheus exporter for what The Litter Robot Connect is a WiFi enabled self cleaning litter box Why on earth The Litter Robot Connect first and foremost is a self cleaning litter box It starts a cleaning cycle after a configurable wait period after each use It empties waste into a drawer below the globe and sends push notifications to cell phones when the drawer needs emptied The app also offers graphs of litter box usage there are aggregated usage metrics for each day of the current week and each week of the last month Unfortunately it does not send notifications when your pet uses the litter box more often than usual which can sometimes indicate something is wrong with your furry friend One morning I noticed my cat was in and out of his litter box a lot and each visit was unproductive With the help of my vet we got him straightened out but I felt really terrible during the whole ordeal that I didn t notice sooner and I found myself really wishing I could get notifications for an increase in use This is why I built the Litter Exporter I can now get near real time metrics on how often its used and when I can even alert when my cat uses the litter box more than usual or more frequently than usual How I Use It and you can too I run the Litter Exporter alongside Prometheus Grafana and Alertmanager via Docker Compose see the examples section in the repo for more The exporter collects metrics from the upstream API Prometheus collects the metrics from the exporterThe metrics are displayed on Grafana dashboardsI use Alertmanager to send notifications if there is a potential problemDisclaimer there is no officially public API for the Litter Robot Connect so this exporter is experimental Breaking changes can occur at any time with no warning so use at your own risk I reached out to AutoPets and a public API is on the roadmap but likely won t be available in Special thanks to the users who reverse engineered the Litter Robot API joshjcarrier natekspencer |

Responsive images for better performance Start using srcset and pictureHi there in today s article we will be talking about responsive images screen sizes pixel density and how the srcset and sizes attributes can help us achieve better performance and a great user experience Read until the end there s a bonus for you Implementing responsive images isn t complicated However it requires us to write a little bit more code it also forces us to couple our CSS and HTML as the image sizes must be declared directly on the lt img gt browsers tag Testing responsive images also require new methods as we now need to ensure that the correct resolution is being loaded at the right time The srcset and sizes attributesThe responsive image spec boils down to two tags and two attributes The first tag we re going to look at is our good old lt img gt tag Two new attributes have been added to the lt img gt tag srcset and sizes These two attributes tell the browser what resolutions are available for a given image and what size the image is supposed to be displayed at at any given breakpoint Based on this information the browser is able to choose and download the most optimal image file for any given device Lets start by having a look at the srcset attribute The srcset attribute lt img srcset assets images image tiny jpeg w assets images image small jpeg w assets images image medium jpeg w assets images image large jpeg w assets images image extra large jpeg w src assets images image medium jpeg alt Banner image gt The srcset attribute contains a comma separated list of URLs with a w descriptor informing the browser how wide each source image is One awesome thing about this syntax is that we don t need to tell the browser what images to use for the different pixel density displays and what images to use for the different screen sizes The browser is able to pick the best image size on its own Note that the scr attribute is here as a fallback for browsers that does not support srcset IE In the snippet above with the srcset attribute we provide five image sources with different sizes px px px px and px And the browser will choose the best image depending on screen size and pixel density Have a look at the video below And if we open the network tab we see that the images were fetched when needed That makes for better performance because the images will load quickly on smaller devices and it therefor makes a better user experience In the example above the image width was vw what if we had a layout where the width of the image was vw minus some padding on desktop and vw minus some padding on mobile That s what sizes is for The sizes attributeWhile the srcset attribute describes the actual width of the source files the sizes attribute tells the browser how wide the image is supposed to be displayed on the screen This is done with the use of inline media queries They work exactly the same as in CSS without the curly braces except you only use it to describe the displayed width of the image Let s have a look lt img srcset assets images image tiny jpeg w assets images image small jpeg w assets images image medium jpeg w assets images image large jpeg w assets images image extra large jpeg w sizes max width px calc vw px calc vw px src assets images image medium jpeg alt A photo of Lyon city gt In the first line of the sizes attribute we specified the width of the image when the screen width is less than px Then in the second line we specified the default width so in this case devices with a screen size that is bigger that px With this the browser is aware of the width of the image in our layout and is able to decide what is the best file to load Have a look at the result Note that the order of the image URLs in the srcset attribute doesn t matter The order in the sizes attribute however matters a lot The browser will use the first media query that matches the current state of the browser This is amazing but there s more Now let s say we want to use other images if the user prefers dark themes For that we can use the lt picture gt tag Let s dig in PictureYou can think of the lt picture gt element as a group of image sources Each individual lt source gt work much like a single lt img gt tag but with an added media attribute This allows us to specify different groups of sources for different media queries while still benefitting from the browser s ability to choose the most optimal resolution of a given image Let s use that to specify two sources one for a light theme and one for a dark theme lt picture gt lt Dark theme gt lt source media prefers color scheme dark srcset assets images tiny dark png w assets images small dark png w assets images medium dark png w assets images large dark png w assets images xl dark png w sizes max width px vw vw gt lt Light theme gt lt source srcset assets images tiny png w assets images small png w assets images medium png w assets images large png w assets images xl png w sizes max width px vw vw gt lt img src assets images medium png alt Banner image gt lt picture gt That looks like this in the browser To emulate dark mode command shift p then paste prefers color scheme and select light or dark Note that the picture element itself does not display anything it provides a context for its contained lt img gt element that enables it to choose from multiple URLs That means that you should always add an lt img gt tag inside the the lt picture gt tag to specify the alt attribute and loading lazy if you want to lazy load the image BonusBetter image encodings such as webP and AVIF can be What to expect from Java interview in In my previous job I did a lot of interviews for our Java developer positions We had a typical modern Java stack based on Spring framework and relational database We usually hired junior devs right after school so our interview process was designed to find talented people with potential not encyclopedical knowledge We had one in person round and take a home coding assignment This article will try to cover both In person roundThis was the more important round of our process Basically usually a team lead of the team that was hiring and one senior dev was conducting it The goal was to determine if the person would be a good fit for a team had some technical thinking capabilities and the most important could communicate In the first part we had a small talk portion that was around previous experiences either their current job or a school project Typical questions here would be What was the last project you worked on What have you learned recently What would be your dream project In the second part we did few technical questions Around some basic Java or Spring things Typical questions here Explain static keyword Explain how to compare objects in Java Equals and hasCode Inversion of control and dependency injection In the third part we had a technical challenge to solve It was a simplified real problem we had to solve during last year we were changing this to keep it interesting It did not have one solution Involved designing a simple alghoritm that strongly suggested use of recursion but could be solved numerous ways The ultimate goal was to for the candidate to design a data structructure and use it in the simple alghoritm We wanted candidate to communicate what they are doing and we usually helped them talk through everything We never looked at the syntax or cared what language they used We wnated to see the capabilities to design the structure to store the data and some basic thinking to see of they at least were able to talk through what should be done In the last part we gave space for any questions Take a home coding challengeWe had a very easy take a home coding challenge that was basically to implement CSV parser Parse data in the CSV we provided and print it as HTML table and excel file We looked at theese concepts in the final code PolymorphismLoggingLibrary usageCommentsUnit testingWe did not require a perfect solution we even did recomend to implement as much as they are feel like and then just write comments explainging how to finish it We did not had a time constrain and ultimate goal here was to see if the candidate would be able to write code at our standards Hope this article helped you can always ask me about anytihng on my Twitter |
