Contributing to Telescope IntroductionWhile waiting for reviews in my recent pull request I decided to find a different project After hours of searching for issues on GitHub I suddenly remembered the first repository where I made my first pull request Telescope Since then the project has undergone many changes with different features and bug fixes so I think it is time to make another contribution The issueA quick overview about Telescope it is a web server and application developed by professors and students at Seneca College to track students faculties blogs about anything open source For my task I had to customize Telescope s build log page to match the design and layout of the main dashboard specifically Add header and side navigation barChange side navigation default logo into Telescope logoUpdate link in side navigation logo to redirect to Working on the issueAfter setting up the development environment using Telescope s documentation I began looking at the UI to figure out what I should do Lucky for me there was also a different issue that addressed the dashboard page UI so I decided to use that as a reference I began by adding each UI component one by one re rendering the page every time I added in new code to make sure I didn t break anything Once I was satisfied with my changes I opened up a pull request on Telescope explaining what I did and providing screenshots of the result Since I was referencing another issue I had to keep track of the updated changes in the other PR and update mine accordingly The other PR also had many requested changes so I tried my best to read through all the reviews adding comments when I needed help and clarification to ensure that I wouldn t break or miss anything ConclusionSimilar to the other PR when this post is online the PR is currently under review I will constantly keep an eye on new notifications regarding this PR and add more commits if needed Cheers |

Micro Frontend, but it's chaos! |
https://dev.to/0xf10yd/micro-frontend-but-its-chaos-68j
|
Micro Frontend but it x s chaos But why do we need it As the frontend becomes larger while holding multiple domains of responsibilities for example ーnavigation user authorization e g the frontend application is developed deployed and hosted as a single application Micro frontends allows us to use those different applications not just on the code base but also in development deployment and serve in order to provide Loosely coupled applicationsFaster development debugging and testing flowsPerformance ーsmaller chunksFull Isolation while testing developing and deployingDuring this article we will review the frontend application that is built out of the shell and applications that represent a domain Shell ーUsed as the entry point for loading each of our micro applications based on the URL path The shell application will also trigger authorization for route guards Navigation ーResponsible for navigation logic and state including the nav bar component navigation serviceUser ーResponsible for user logic and state including the user query and store logic user info component and user management pageFeed ーResponsible for fetching and presenting the feed items each item contains the user logic and state including the user query and store logic Each application built out the following layers Composition layer ーThis layer holds a set of application pages with their corresponding routesWidgets layer ーThis layer holds a set of domain related components used to build the different pages found on the composition layerBusiness logic layer ーThis layer holds a set of services and utilities responsible for the domain business logic Communication layer ーThis layer holds a set of services that are used to communicate with the different service providers Backend services for example Storage layer ーThis layer holds the logic to persist data into the storage objectsIn memory ーState hooks e g Disk ーlocal storage indexedDB cookies e g Wait but where is the chaos Thanks to module federation we can load Micro frontends applications during run time without the need to build the entire dependency graph This introduces a whole new aspect of stability issues of frontend applications What happens when we are deploying a new version of our application User in our scenario How can we identify affected areas How can we guarantee there are no breaking changes hidden behind each deployment How can we prevent tight coupling between multiple applications that are hosted together In our example imagine a developer changed one of the widgets from the User application this widget is consumed by both the Feed and the Navigation applications Now let s imagine the change the developer done is breaking the contract component API ーinputs outputs aka props This will lead to a runtime error while loading the new version within the existing applications And the result Cascading failure of our frontend application after deployment of the new User application Tackling the problemFirst let s review the requirements we have from the micro frontend applications Each application should be built tested and served as a standalone unit A modification of a single application should be available to be used by any other application Application widgets and services should be reusable and interchangeable Encapsulation of application internal models and business logic ーModifications shouldn t affect application consumers Identify dependency graph per modification ーwill help us to trigger only the relevant tests suites and builds Following those items lets review the approach from the previous section The approach covers bullets to from the requirements list But it still fails for both bullets and which promise us the stability of our product Let s review the different approaches to handle this chaos The libraries approachIn order to increase the stability of the application we need to prevent hidden breaking changes With the libraries approach this can achieve easily while using the npm package version As each build of our applications is sealing the library version it s using we can prevent consumption of library versions that might contain breaking changes Using module federation we can set the shared libraries as part of this configuration we can set the satisfied package version using the npm package versioning convention This approach helps us to break our monolith into layers Core Library ーThis layer contains domain agnostic libraries those libraries provide us the building block for our feature libraries layer Feature libraries layer ーThis layer contains domain specific business logic storage logic and widgets Those widgets are developed based on the core libraries component kit and additional components that are part of the specific domain of responsibility Composition applications ーThis layer contains domain specific routes and pages Those pages are built based on widgets services and business logic developed as part of the “Feature libraries layer Shell ーThe entry point of the application usually acts as a container and a router to load each of the micro applications based on the path The shell application might also trigger authorization logic Structure apps user feed navigation shell libs users lib feed lib navigation lib authWebpack configuration plugins new ModuleFederationPlugin name applications Breaking changes prevention ーUsing a sealed version of the consumed library during the build DisadvantagesData corruption ーPossible due to collision between multiple versions of the same library override the state local storage e g Bundle size increase ーLibraries might be loaded more than once due to different versions Deployment graph complexity ーcritical modifications require rebuilding and redeploying the entire dependency graph The anti corruption layer approach What is the anti corruption layer An anti corruption layer is a set of Public APIs exposed by an application for integration use those Public APIs are acting as contracts in order to isolate the application internal models and business logic complexity and are used as exported modules components façade and adapters classes This layer can be uni directional or bi directional fetch or ingest data FaçadeA service that provides a simple interface to a complex application encapsulates the complexity of initiating the application A façade might provide limited functionality those are the required sub set for integrating with the micro frontend applicationAdapterA service that is responsible for covert the interface and the data model of an object to another structure interface which is accepted by the consumers The updated layers approachThe only modification is casting the Feature layer from libraries to applications this allows us to serve those widgets and services seamlessly to the consumers Having said that we will still need to protect from breaking changes here is where the anti corruption layer is taking placeCore Library ーThis layer contains domain agnostic libraries those libraries provide us the building block for our feature libraries layer Feature application layer ーThis layer contains domain specific business logic storage logic and widgets Those widgets are developed based on the core libraries component kit and additional components that are part of the specific domain The exposed logic and components are protected with an anti corruption layer to prevent breaking changes Composition applications ーThis layer contains domain specific routes and pages Those pages are built based on widgets services and business logic developed as part of the “Feature application layer Shell ーThe entry point of the application usually acts as a container and a DOJ charges two Iranian hackers for threatening US voters during electionThe US Department of Justice has charged two Iranian hackers for their involvement in a disinformation campaign that targeted American voters ahead of the presidential election In October of last year Seyyed Kazemi and Sajjad Kashian allegedly sent threatening emails to Democratic voters in Florida in which they threatened to physically hurt them if they did not vote for former President Donald Trump When the incident first happened the US Director of National Intelligence held a press conference to warn voters of the emails Additionally Kazemi and Kashian allegedly attempted to break into state voter registration and information websites In one instance the DOJ alleges they successfully downloaded the information of more than state voters They may have also carried out a disinformation campaign on Facebook that saw them contact among other individuals Republican senators and members of Congress They claimed they were volunteers with Proud Boys and said they had evidence the Democratic Party planned to exploit security vulnerabilities in election systems to edit mail in ballots Kazemi and Kashian s efforts to sway the election culminated on November th when they allegedly attempted to hack the network of a US media company They were unsuccessful because the FBI had warned the firm in time “This indictment details how two Iran based actors waged a targeted coordinated campaign to erode confidence in the integrity of the U S electoral system and to sow discord among Americans said Assistant Attorney General Matthew G Olsen of the DOJ s National Security Division in a statement “The allegations illustrate how foreign disinformation campaigns operate and seek to influence the American public US officials told The Washington Post they believe the two hackers are currently in Iran suggesting they may not face authorities anytime soon The DOJ also didn t directly link their actions to the Iranian government |

Is Twitter Blue worth $3 a month? |
https://www.engadget.com/is-twitter-blue-worth-3-dollars-a-month-210059983.html?src=rss
|
Is Twitter Blue worth a month Last week Twitter s “premium subscription service made its debut in the United States Twitter Blue is a monthly subscription that buys subscribers access to additional features like an undo button and ad free news articles For now Twitter Blue comes with a fairly limited set of extra features designed for the people who spend the most time on the service According to Twitter s Sara Beukpour this group includes “verified longtime Twitter users as well as “news lovers and other “super tweeters In other words the percent of Twitter s user base who send percent of all tweets “I actually bet many of them are you Beykpour said during a briefing with a group of tech reporters last week Of course I signed up immediately And after a little more than a week with Twitter Blue I m not sure it s worth a month for most people The features are mostly useful but it s frustrating that not everything works the same way across Twitter s app and website But there are undoubtedly useful features and I am intrigued by what might come next for “premium Twitter For now though here s a look at what buys you Undo tweetsOf all the features in Twitter Blue the “undo button has gotten the most hype Twitter will likely never give us an actual edit button so this is probably the closest we ll ever get And if you re prone to typos or tweeting and then instantly regretting this feature alone might be worth the subscription I say might because the “undo can also be incredibly confusing and doesn t always work as you expect It s supposed to work pretty much like Gmail s “undo send feature After you hit “send you ll have a few seconds when you can see the tweet you just wrote but it hasn t actually been published If you change your mind for whatever reason you can hit “undo which takes you back to the tweet in the compose screen Twitter gives you the ability to set how long this window is ーit can range from seconds to a full seconds ーand you can always opt to send it before the window runs out with an extra click Screenshot TwitterBut undoing a tweet doesn t always work the same way across Twitter s app and website On Twitter s app you can use the “undo feature for almost any type of tweet original tweets tweets sent from the main compose window replies threads quote tweets and polls Essentially you can “undo almost anything you tweet anywhere in the app But that s not the case on twitter com where the undo function only works with original tweets and replies but not with quote tweets or threads Unless you exclusively tweet from your phone this means you have to remember which tweets are editable undoable and which aren t A typo ridden tweet can be undone but an ill advised quote tweet cannot There s also the fact that it can take several steps to actually undo a tweet In Twitter s app the default setting is that the first thing you see after you mash the tweet button is your tweet and an “undo button This gives you plenty of time to give it another read even if you have a relatively short undo “window But on Twitter s website you can only undo by looking for a “view tweet dialog at the bottom of the page and then navigating to the page with your tweet and the undo button nbsp Sometimes quot view tweet quot doesn t appear at all and the only way to access the quot undo quot is to navigate to your profile and look for the pending tweet on your timeline Not only is this a confusing extra step but it also makes it harder to take advantage of the undo button at all Is it still useful to have I guess but the unpredictability of it kind of gave me more anxiety than just not having it at all Reader mode and bookmark foldersThe reader mode is probably the most underrated feature of Twitter Blue and the one I d argue would be most useful for all the site s users not just those willing to pay It converts long threads into a much more readable stream of text much like a browser s reader view would I hate those intrusive and ethically dubious third party thread apps that “unroll tweets into separate websites but there s a reason why those services are so popular lengthy threads are difficult to read Twitter s service was never designed for essay length tweet storms and long threads are often cut off Reader mode is a simple solution that is so effective I can t believe it took them this long to make Screenshot TwitterIt s even better when paired with another new feature bookmark folders Now when I come across an impossibly long tweetstorm I want to come back to later I simply add it to my “to read folder and keep scrolling Except again bookmark folders are for now only supported in Twitter s app Head over to twitter com and all your bookmarks are still a mess Ad free news and top articles My favorite Twitter Blue feature ーand a large part of the reason why I will likely continue handing over each month for it ーis the “top articles feature The feature shows you a list of all the most shared news articles by people in your Twitter network over the last hours If that sounds at all familiar it s because the feature is Twitter s nod to Nuzzel a once independent news app that also created feeds of articles based on what was being shared by people you follow on Twitter But the original app was shut down when Twitter acquired Scroll the news startup that had previously bought Nuzzel And while “Top Articles doesn t have all the functionality Nuzzel once did it s enough to scratch the itch for former fans of the app a group that seems to be almost entirely made up of journalists as far as I can tell But even if you never used Nuzzel Top Articles is useful It gives you a quick digest of what the people you follow are reading and tweeting about Or you know you can just use it to figure out who is the main character of the day Screenshot TwitterTwitter s acquisition of Scroll also powers another significant part of Twitter Blue ad free news articles Scroll and now Twitter formed partnerships with hundreds of news outlets in order to offer ad free browsing in exchange for a portion of users subscription fees Now Twitter lets subscribers view how much their own browsing has directed to those publishers It s an intriguing concept and one that won Scroll a lot of praise before it was bought by Twitter It s also the aspect of Twitter Blue I m most curious to watch As it stands now it can feel a little disjointed While stripping out ads is nice it doesn t include access to paywalled content so it can be jarring to see an “ad free with Twitter Blue banner only to hit a paywall However Twitter has hinted that it may one day pursue more ways to access paywalled content ーand a message in the app says paywall access isn t included “right now ーso there s good reason to hope that may one day change Early access to new features and customizationTwitter has gotten much more public with the features it experiments with in recent years The company at one point had a separate beta version of the app it used to try out new tweaks That app is no longer available but the “labs feature of Twitter Blue feels in some ways like its successor The company plans to make some experimental features available to Twitter Blue subscribers first before deciding whether they should become full fledged features available to more people For now there are only two features that fall into this bucket the ability to pin specific chats to the top of your DM inbox and the ability to upload videos of up to minutes these longer videos are not entirely new but accounts had to be approved by Twitter in order to have access to the feature I appreciate having the option to do both though I haven t used either feature and I suspect most others won t either Screenshot TwitterFinally Twitter Blue also gives you the ability to make small tweaks to the look and feel of the Twitter app For example you can change the app icon or set a new color theme the “theme only changes small elements like the color of the tweet composer and the dot that appears when you have a new notification You can also opt to rearrange the shortcuts in the bottom of the app s navigation bar which is kind of cool especially if you want to say banish the Spaces Tab But again these are small details that I can t imagine most people bothering to change Is it worth it Whether or not you think all that is worth three bucks a month largely depends on how much you use Twitter and how willing you are to pay for apps While I don t think it makes sense for most people I think it s pretty compelling for anyone who depends on Twitter for their job or otherwise falls into that extra dedicated “super tweeter category And while Twitter hasn t offered any details around how many subscribers have signed up the app has made about since it first started offering Twitter Blue this summer according to data provided by analytics firm Sensor Tower That s not much money for Twitter but it does suggest there is a not totally insignificant number of people willing to try it out and the service is still only available in four countries At a broader level Twitter Blue raises important questions about how the company will prioritize new features While the company has maintained that there will always be a free version of Twitter it s not difficult to imagine that the most exciting and useful updates could end up being locked behind a subscription Twitter spent much of the last decade not really creating any meaningful new features at all so it still stings a little to see the company add the kinds of features longtime users have long hoped for only to restrict them to those willing to pay |
