Customizing my Zsh Prompt |
https://dev.to/cassidoo/customizing-my-zsh-prompt-3417
|
Customizing my Zsh PromptI have a little zshrc file to customize my terminal and I ve always wanted a fun prompt besides the default but haven t really done much to learn it So after some research I figured out the basics of how to make my little prompt useful without being too overwhelming or distracting Here s what it looks like You might notice that I don t have the typical things like my username or machine name or anything because I don t need that personally But after reading this you ll be able to add that yourself What to typeIf you don t know how to open your configuration file go ahead and open it with vim zshrc or code zshrc or whatever editor your prefer First add these two lines to your zshrc autoload Uz vcs infoprecmd vcs info This loads the Version Control System into your prompt here s the documentation for it Next you want to add the next line that sets up the Git branch details into your prompt zstyle vcs info git formats b That b is the branch name variable I added a space after it for formatting reasons You can add other variables in the string there here s a good blog of options for example information about stashes the name of the root directory of the repo staged changes etc Now you ll add these final two lines to put your prompt together setopt PROMPT SUBSTPROMPT F green f F blue f F red vcs info msg f This is hairy looking so let me break it down Colors When you surround things in F and f that changes the foreground color of anything in between them The color in the curly braces is the color that s edited In this case you can see green blue and red There s similar things like this with U and u to underline K and k for background colors and more with documentation here scroll to Visual effects ZSH understands the colors black red green yellow blue magenta cyan and white by default Dates and times The that you see is the time in hour format with seconds There s more options for this like W for the date for example The docs for this is here scroll to Date and time The directory The shows the current working directory and its path Look at Shell state in the docs if you want to replace it with something else The variable Now the next part is loading in your variable the vcs info msg This plops your branch variable that we made before in that red text wrapper there The final at the end is just to lead the user input You can replace it with gt or or WOW or more variables or whatever you d like The end Here is the whole prompt that you can paste in and customize autoload Uz vcs infoprecmd vcs info zstyle vcs info git formats b setopt PROMPT SUBSTPROMPT F green f F blue f F red vcs info msg f Once you ve saved this run source zshrc to load it in the terminal or just restart your terminal open a new tab Because I like opening and editing quickly I added these aliases to make the opening loading faster alias bp vim zshrc alias sa source zshrc echo ZSH aliases sourced And now the world s ya oystah I hope this was helpful for you |

A Different Approach to Measuring Open Source Community Health |
https://dev.to/scarf/a-different-approach-to-measuring-open-source-community-health-4n8m
|
A Different Approach to Measuring Open Source Community Health What is Community Health Community is important to the success of open source software The health of a community can be measured in different ways depending on the stakeholders involved To understand and grow a community project founders and maintainers need visibility into various technical social and even financial metrics These metrics are important because they can help projects form data driven decisions But what metrics should we be using This post is inspired by several discussions I have seen around the failings of current open source metrics and the tools used to measure them This post will discuss what metrics we currently use and what I believe we should be using instead Current MetricsOn LinkedIn s publishing platform Pulse William Tracz wrote about Open Source vanity metrics and the problem with using them to measure a project s success Tracz lamented they could not currently see a better way to gather valuable data about open source projects What are these current metrics Like Tracz mentions many of the metrics open source maintainers and contributors rely on are considered “vanity metrics This term does not mean these metrics are not useful but they often do not give a full picture of a communities health Examples of vanity metrics in open source are Number of GitHub starsNumber of active commitsNumber of new and closed issuesReleasesand more Often these are metrics founders and maintainers care about as they provide a way to quickly show “success but may not actually help when it comes to important business outcomes and decisions Tools You Can Use to See Metrics OrbitOrbit is a tool you can integrate with GitHub to see metics like Pull request openedPull request mergedIssue openedIssue comment createdand more As an open source community manager I used Orbit to quickly track new comments from contributors and maintainers so I could respond in a timely manner I also used it to see when community members were no longer active This helped me reach out and get feedback CHAOSS MetricsCHAOSS is a Linux Foundation project focused on creating analytics and metrics to help define community health Common RoomCommon Room is a growth platform that focuses on a business community The platform helps companies connect their community engagement product usage and customer data through the use of artificial intelligence BitergiaBitergia is an analytics tool for software development teams open source program offices and InnerSource programs Open source projects can use this tool to improve decision making and reporting by analyzing software development community activity and performance of open source projects MericoMerico provides tools to help engineering teams understand and optimize their productivity and code quality What Metrics Should We Use “Tracking different types of metrics is essential for free and open source communities Metrics give project insights into specific efforts and help get a feel of the community s general perception For that tools that can pull data from various sources and develop a visualization of this data will help projects make informed decisions Linux com Editorial Staff Measuring the Health of Open Source CommunitiesIn the article quoted above and in William Tracz s article the need for a tool that can pull more valuable data is apparent But what data should projects be looking at and what tool could they use Beyond Vanity MetricsWhat if you could see a project s impact identify potential customers and understand showcase growth without sacrificing your end user s privacy Scarf Gateway helps you understand how users are interacting with your open source project at every step of their journeyInstead of answering questions like “how many followers do we have Scarf s data digs deeper in to a project s community health and answers questions like How many new companies tried our OSS this month How many unique users did our OSS have this month compared to last month Was the spike in downloads we saw last week genuine growth or a thrashing CI pipeline from an existing user Should I actually spend the time to fix the bug for that one Windows user We can also have visibility into how OSS software is distributed Instead of wondering who is using our software Scarf s data answers questions like What percent of our user base has adopted our latest patch What cloud providers are the most popular with our users Scarf can also help uncover community metrics like your projects discoverability usage churn and commercial reliance Community Managers can use this data to proactively connect with users and grow a healthy and vibrant OSS community This data compliments the metrics you can get from tools like Orbit and answers questions like What is the geographical breakdown of our user base What percentage of our user base is corporate usage vs hobby usage What time zones should we cater to with our online event planning For a project s documentation it can answer What percent of our user base is on Windows vs Linux vs Mac Which section of our docs are users finding most confusing A New WayThis type of rich usage data moves beyond the typical vanity metrics the open source community has typically relied on While those metrics can tell you a lot about a project they do not give the full picture of a community s health With the addition of tools like Scarf Gateway maintainers now have the power to make more informed decisions When maintainers have hard data around who where and why companies and individuals are using their software they can better prioritize features patches releases and more |

How I Got Into Computers - Thomson MO5, My First Love |
https://dev.to/wesen/how-i-got-into-computers-thomson-mo5-my-first-love-3hg1
|
How I Got Into Computers Thomson MO My First Love Geneva Switzerland My grandmother and I are walking in the city center and pass an underground garage entry We pass a large ticket vending machine Right in the middle of the front panel ominously red there is a button Five year old me evidently presses that button not even a second later a light goes on and a distorted voice comes out of a speaker yelling something I don t understand I panic my grandmother quickly yanks me to the side and tells me harshly not to press random buttons again I know better when I am a grown up I will press random buttons and make things happen and noone will be able to stop me Aumale a small town in rural Normandie France My first grade class in fact the town was so small that first grade and fifth grade were combined into a single classroom of go to the town s community center It is a small room lined with TVs and the French answer to the ZX the Thomson MO France in the ies had a strong penchant for Digital Utopianism as evidenced by the Minitel and pervasive computer education in schools When turned on the machine instantaneously boots into a BASIC prompt You can either write your program cold or load it from a ROM cartridge or a standard tape cassette Our teacher plugged in the LOGO cartridge and the magic turtle appeared on screen AVANCE DROITE RECULE GAUCHE was my first program The software I liked the most was the story engine where you could could fill in different words into a skeletal tale While we never really learned how to program this was a clear indication that pressing random buttons was a valid career path Strasbourg France Around my parents saved up and bought a used without a graphics card while it had no hard drive it had two floppy drives immensely better than a slow tape reader It came with DOS and Wordperfect on floppies along with DOS came a bunch of other tools GWBASIC and DEBUG COM were to have a lasting influence While I didn t get into programming until later in I did read the Wordperfect manual back to front it came in beautiful blue binders and learned to program macros I can remember the tutorial contents about the Versailles castle to this day In the early ies with a and no graphics card there weren t many video games to play with We had Tetris my father also got ahold of a copy of Leisure Suit Larry which interestingly enough is rendered as text with the ASCII extension character set That was it Leisure Suit Larry allowed me to deeply hone my English language skills I also learned a lot about American presidents knowledge I needed to pass the age test at game start I later learned you could also just press F I did make significant progress in the game but let s say that it only had a few pulsating blocky characters to offer in lieu of titillation Due to the invasion of home computers in the ies the ZX the C the Thomsons the Ataris the Amigas public libraries were flooded with introduction to programming books for kids well clearly targeted at boys For an illustration of sexism in french society here is a quite entertaining look at TV ads These books were filled with little robots explaining what a variable is and beautifully illustrated program listings Gone were the days of solving riddles in seedy Vegas hooker bars I could now copy the following code from Usborne s Space Games and be escape from aliens in my spaceship I still can t convey how exhilarating this was I graduated to writing a full adventure game following the instructions in this book Write your own adventure programs Usborne The BASIC didn t line up the computer architecture neither and I didn t really understand that at the time It took me many months to get it to run but I ultimately I have since carried that book with me everywhere as a talisman a reminder of the dreams that got me into programming Boston MA USA years and a lot of button pressing to make things happen later Here I am about to turn in a big city on a far away continent directly across the ocean from that small town in Normandie flush with computerbucks facing mortality searching for the meaning of life circling the drain of my midlife crisis And I say to myself Oh heck Manuel YOLO rewind the first tape of MANDRAGORE and type RUN excruciating minutes of tape loading later I know why writing your own games was so popular It wasn t hard to do better than this |
