海外TECH DEV Community Can AI do Code Review? https://dev.to/krlvi/can-ai-do-code-review-3a5g Can AI do Code Review So I ve been wondering this ーHow predictable is programming With tools like GitHub Copilot being pretty decent at writing code surely reviewing should be possible too And if you think about it reviewing pull requests mainly pattern matching TLDR Yep it can with crazy accuracy Okay let s add a little bit of context first On average most code contributions about get merged without any fixes changes as a result of the review Most teams aim to ship code in small incremental pull requests but no matter how seemingly safe a change is you have to wait for review But why Well if an AI can accurately predict which contributions would be approved by humans it can save developers a ton of time Saving review time aside the part I m really excited about is this If we can stop rubber stamping every single PR we can start paying more attention to the tricky ones How demoDuring a hackaton at work we built Codeball ーa code review AI which approves safe Pull Requests that a human would have approves We trained it on over M Pull Requests so it has seen tons of failure shitty code and success decent code patterns making it really good at telling the difference You can play with it at codeball ai where you can do historical tests on GitHub repos to see what the AI would have done Results and what s nextPeople have been testing Codeball on all sorts of pull requests resulting in around accuracy To quote a comment from a Hacker News thread Codeball is like a strict bartender who only serves you when they are absolutely sure you re old enough You may still be overage but Codeball s not serving you You can add Codeball to your repository as a GitHub Action takes like minutes Thanks for reading Kiril 2022-06-01 13:38:00
海外TECH DEV Community Make Yourself Accessible: Why It Matters https://dev.to/thegnarco/make-yourself-accessible-why-it-matters-5ajo Make Yourself Accessible Why It MattersMy grandfather used a wheelchair after suffering a spinal injury in his forties His house had a long ramp and a tiny elevator his pepper grinder was electric and he slept on a waterbed it was AWESOME If he were using the modern Internet he d be using accessibility tech He had mobility in his hands and I think a mouse with the sensitivity dialed way up would ve been manageable but I think he would ve found speech to text software really useful We all live different lives and experience different kinds of constraints It s a basic premise of our existence Internet resources aren t any different and humans taken as a whole are great at using tools and tricks to access what they need We can adapt and that s amazing But making sites that everybody can use with a minimum of adaptation requires care and attention from developers to implement accessibility If we write inaccessible code the site won t be accessible and we ll have excluded groups of people from being able to use and enjoy the experience our application provides Why Accessibility Matters Accessibility generally indicates the ability to access which means that it ll always depend on conditions and capabilities that are unique to a given user It s necessarily broad because humans vary widely In coding it s somewhat close to implementing and maintaining compliance with a web standard aimed at making the Internet more inclusive and easier to access In a perfect world this wouldn t need to be explained Access to information and resources should not be gated behind possessing a mythical perfect level of ability Nobody exists without experiencing the world in their own way so we shouldn t be building tech that fails to take the wide range of human experience into account There are a lot of great resources out there making this point from smarter folks than me Here are some Let s take vision as a limited example because the Internet is largely a visual medium There are a LOT of people on the Internet Like billion people says Google Effectively it s a number so large that we can t imagine it A recent WHO fact sheet on vision impairment states that billion people worldwide experience some form of vision impairment This covers a wide range of disabilities but this other article suggests that something like of the global population experiences moderate to total vision impairment Or put another way in people across the entire species This is part of why we have screen readers And that s only one axis of human experience that can be complicated by a failure to account for differing degrees of ability Screen readers allow users with limited mobility like my grandfather to use speech to text software to access and create content Reading text aloud can help neurodivergent people process information more effectively That s why we talk about accessibility this is one aspect of human life that can be made vastly easier if we just write better code And it s better more thorough code that makes the most difference to end users The rest of this post will try to stop yelling about moral principles and actually talk about coding I may or may not succeed at that given the track record so far Accessibility matters AND it s good for your code Luckily writing accessible code is often the same thing as writing simple effective front end code Browsers are intended for general use and offer a lot of functionality intended to make sure that it s possible for developers to write accessible code For instance this is what the Lighthouse tab in Chrome does Translating stored information into a visual medium that a non technical user can manipulate is kind of the whole point of a web browser and the companies and organizations that create and maintain them have a clear interest in making sure that their user base is as large as possible It s a crucial part of how they make money But the existence of browser supported tools means that it s up to us as developers to write code that can be accessed by people We can cite some specific examples Complicated tabindex ranks are a trap You can add whatever you like I ve definitely done it but anything greater than or likely means that hitting TAB while on a webpage will be about as predictable and reliable as hucking rocks over your shoulder It also makes it impossible to navigate a site via keyboard which is hugely important for users with mobility issues and developers that just flat out refuse to touch a mouse Form elements should almost always be labeled It s way too easy to write a clever UI element that skips adding a label and then discover that what you ve written just cannot be effectively navigated when something needs to be responsive Screen readers agree they don t like guessing what a form does and shouldn t have to Writing well structured forms with labeled fields is clearly a best practice and implementing it is the same thing as making your code more accessible Browser media elements are fun Sound effects can be really satisfying YouTube should be a public service at this point and I m writing this while listening to Spotify which is based on Chromium But they can cause problems Autoplaying videos can really screw up screen reading because screen reader users frequently need to y know hear what the software is saying to them Also videos that play automatically can consume system resources that you d otherwise have available for other tasks and nobody likes them Failing to implement good captioning can create huge problems for deaf and hard of hearing users If they re out of sync incorrect or there s no structured summary for the content then it increases the friction experienced by users attempting to engage with that content This is why Zoom recently added automatic captioning A lot of the fixes for transcription involve paying for a service which isn t what we re going to cover here But writing semantic structured HTML that includes summaries for videos and alt text for visual elements means that you ve made it much simpler to receive and parse the information you re trying to communicate and that can go a long way toward making a site more accessible Deuteranopia the inability of your eyes to receive green light and protanopia the same thing but for red are really really common The linked article cites a common statistic about of people with XY chromosomes experience some form of color blindness the number is significantly lower for people with XX chromosomes around in people If the text color in a given element is too close to the background color of the element it can be really hard to read Don t do that Etcetera etcetera etcetera By writing consistent simple accessible front end code wherever feasible it becomes easier to make sure that your users can access and navigate your site s content That s the main argument human diversity needs to be represented in the code you write because browsers are built to be used by a wide range of people and excluding your users is counter intuitive Above I cited some examples which are by no means exhaustive This is a huge complex world and my goal here is to demonstrate how writing better code makes your users lives better Which phrased that way seems somewhat obvious but that s okay Next StepsIn Part which will be published very soon we ll turn to talking about a basic framework for adding some automated accessibility checking to your application In Part which will be published when I finish this giant feature and have some free time agh we ll apply that framework to an existing Rails application which is more complicated and involves RSpec wizardry 2022-06-01 13:24:20
海外TECH DEV Community Proper API Response structure {} - Importance & Advantages! https://dev.to/bsantosh909/proper-api-response-structure-importance-advantages-152p Proper API Response structure Importance amp Advantages ️Before starting to write anything I would like to mention that all this is my personal thoughts based on my knowledge experiences and issues I have faced in the past ️It is the modern age of Internet and there are thousands if not millions of website we have stumbled upon Hundreds of which may be dynamic i e fetch data whenever we request from some data source The whole process of data fetching in most of the cases is done through API SOAP REST or GraphQL Thus you can consider an API as the translator between two people who talk two different language Just imagine what would happen if the translator translates it wrong Things to ConsiderCommunication is key Thus there are lots of things which I think we should consider when setting up API response Do not use top level data Objects or ArraysI used to think it s easy to just send the data after fetching it directly from the Database For e g sending this response for API call fullName Full Name dateOfBirth Or the e g below for API call fullName First User dateOfBirth fullName Second User dateOfBirth While it will be easy to return the data like this it will cause a huge problem sooner or later The major problem being We can t add extra information in the first response object and it s not even possible in the second response array Use consistent variable name casingThere are variable ways to name a variable camelCase being the popular one around JavaScript developers snake case being the popular one around Python developers snake case for Python developers what a coincedence PascalCasekebab caseI think it was not really necessary to mention about it because developers using a specific language already have their own preference over variable name casing Just a note from my side using multiple name casing in a single project is a big NO If possible I would even suggest everyone to grab a name casing technique and follow it throughout the entire journey of programming in life Use proper variable namesThis is not just for the API response object but also the codes itself and Database entity itself as well I am pretty sure there are thousands of articles notes metioning about how variable names should be written so I am not gonna go in depth but I would like to attach a simple yet important note about this topic Variables name should be As short as possible as long as required SolutionThe simple yet powerful solution to API response structure is to simply have the data structure as follow For e g sending this response for API call message Successfully fetched User data data fullName Full Name dateOfBirth Or the e g below for API call message Successfully fetch Users data pagination page count perPage data fullName First User dateOfBirth fullName Second User dateOfBirth You might have already noticed that I am able to send message in the API response And also in the second API usage example I am even able to send pagination details There will be thousands of data processing happening so pagination is obviously to be done sooner or later However in the previous approach we could not properly mention about the pagination details Which we have overcome You might now be wondering Isn t it painful to access the data going one more level deep in the object i e response data instead of response The answer is Yes but apart from that downside it s only good point I can think up of For e g lets say we have to respond with error message if the API request is invalid Following this approach we can simply send the response like message Invalid email address or any other error message And now in the frontend mobile app we can always refer to response message to get the information about the API usage And to understand if the API call was a success or failure we can use HTTP status code of the API call The main pointThe major point of all this discussion is that the APi response should never be a top level data object itself Instead use an object which contains all the information you want ot share from server to frontend not related to API And within the top level object include the data related to the API call inside a result or data key This will result in clean and consistent API response acorss every API endpoint And also you will be able to share extra information which is not related to the specific API call ConclusionI have done this mistake in the past and learnt a hard way from it That doesn t mean you have to make this mistake yourself to learn You can try implementing this approach I have mentioned in your next project or even your current project if possible without major breaking changes If you are someone developing API I would love to hear your thoughts about this approach and if you would like to switch to this approach if not already using If you are someone who consumes API I would love to hear your thoughts about how this change if it is not what your current API provides would affect you If you are already using this approach then cheers you are making life of yourself and the frontend developer easy 2022-06-01 13:23:19
海外TECH DEV Community Cloud Computing and AWS https://dev.to/aws-builders/cloud-computing-and-aws-14g0 Cloud Computing and AWS OverviewLarge Companies startups and even individuals are all switching to the cloud and carrying out most of their activities in the cloud Cloud computing is emerging with a great demand Companies like AWS provides cloud computing platforms and major services for individuals companies and even the government The services they provide are on demand and affordable AWS has four foundation services which are ComputeStorageDatabaseNetworkI didn t know about cloud computing until I got accepted into the AWS Community Builders program AWS are doing a great work in bringing people s awareness to what Cloud Computing is and the need to migrate to the cloud In this article I am going to explain the concept of cloud computing in simple ways This article is divided into five sections to make you understand cloud computing and why you need to migrate The sections are Concept of Cloud Computing Benefits of Cloud Computing Cloud Computing Models Deployment Models ConclusionLet s get started Concept of Cloud Computing Companies startups and even individuals spend a lot of money to set up data centers They take into consideration the amount of compute power they need the servers storage e t c order for servers and different materials before setting up a data center These technology services are useless when there is no work to do and they end up becoming redundant Cloud computing is here to solve these problems What is Cloud Computing Cloud Computing is the on demand delivery of IT resources over the internet with PAY AS YOU GO pricing IT resources compute storage database and network which are needed by companies make them go through too much stress to set up data centers which will become useless when they don t need them no more Cloud Computing provides these technology services exactly when you need them on demand with pay as you go pricing i e you only pay for what you use In other words Cloud Computing is a remote virtual pool of on demand shared resources offering compute storage database and network services that can be rapidly deployed at scale Companies like AWS has a large data centers offering IT resources for others to benefit from Providing it for them exactly when they need them while they pay for only what they use But this is impossible without Virtualization When multiple virtual machines VMs each running essentially a separate operating system and applications are installed on one physical server with each performing their tasks uninterruptedly we said it is Virtualization Vendors like AWS refers these VMs as intances They make it available to be bought and used by users with various configuration Suppose you need to use a large amount of storage without setting up a data center all you have to do is order for the Amazon S simple storage service and put it to a good use This is how it work You buy the instance VM for storage from vendor e g AWS Once you launch this instance it got installed on the AWS Large physical hardware in their data center When you make a request to use a certain amount of storage the request goes via the Hypervisor which handles the request A Hypervisor is a piece of software used to create the virtualized environment allowing for multiple VMs to be installed on the same host The Hypervisor sits between the VMs and the physical hardware and creates a shared pool of virtual hardware for each of them to access The Hypervisor reaches out to AWS Physical Hardware to provide for you the amount of storage you requested for Every VM installed on the hardware sees the hardware but they don t see each other The hypervisor ensures the hardware resources are shared between all the VMs as needed and as configured Everyone using the cloud gets what they want exactly when needed paying for only what they use Benefits of Cloud ComputingAs a developer you would surely be curious about the reason why you need to adopt cloud computing and migrate to the cloud Below are various benefits that would convince you to adopt cloud computing High security Every developer companies and enterprises are always concern about their data Cybercrimes are increasing with hackers breaching into many companies storage accessing their data and using it for crime purposes This has put many companies in a devastating state reduced revenue due trust loss in them by customers Cloud storage is the most secure because it offers a great security Many features and configurations allows only the architect to have access to company s data and can only give access to any qualified employee This has improved security greatly and reduced data breaches Adoption of Variable expense variable expense means you only pay for what you use Traditional approach of companies to access IT resources is the upfront expense where they have to invest in data centers physical servers before knowing how to use them Adopting variable expense that cloud computing offers will give a chance of inventing innovative services while saving cost and time Stop guessing capacity Cloud computing makes it possible to use resources exactly when you need them Instead of predicting how much infrastructure you need before deploying application all you have to do is just launch an instance You only pay for what you use Speed and Agility Cloud computing makes it easy to have access to the resources you need within minutes Applications are deployed faster unlike un data centers where you have to wait for weeks before having access to resources which delays work and make you less productive Go global in minutes AWS Global infrastructure makes it possible for you to go global in minutes Your customers can have access to your applications within minutes WIN WIN for everyone Cloud Computing ModelsThere are three main models cloud computing offers Individuals or companies can choose between these models based on their product requirements The models are explained below INFRASTRUCTURE AS A SERVICE IAAS IAAS contains the basic building blocks for the cloud IT and typically provides access to networking features computers virtual or on dedicated hardware and data storage space IAAS provides you with highest level of flexibility and management control over your IT resources and is the similar to existing IT resources that many IT departments and developers are familiar with today PLATFORM AS A SeRVICE PAA PAAS removes the need for your organization to manage the underlying infrastructure usually hardware and operating systems and allows you to focus on the deployment and management of your management of your applications This helps you be more efficient as you don t need to worry about resource procurement capacity planning software maintenance patching or any of the other undifferentiated heavy lifting involved in running your application SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE SAAS SAAS provides you with a completed product that is run and managed by the service provider In most cases people referring to SAAS are referring to end user applications With SAAS offering you do not have to think about how the service is maintained or how the underlying infrastructure is managed you only need to think about how you will use that particular piece of software Deployment ModelsTraditional deployment are what we are all familiar with Applications are deployed using on premises resources which are not easy to set up With cloud computing we have three options of using IT resources when deploying applications Applications are deployed faster with less stress and less budget you only pay for what you use The models are explained below ClOUD Applications can be created in the cloud or can be migrated from an existing infrastructure to take full advantage of the cloud A cloud based application is fully deployed in the cloud and all the parts of the application run in the cloud Cloud based applications can be built on a low level infrastructure pieces or can use higher level services that provide abstraction from the management architecting and scaling requirements of core infrastructure This gives birth to Public Cloud A Public Cloud is where a vendor e g AWS makes available the use of shared infrastructure which includes all IT resources compute storage database and network services These resources can be accessed over the internet with pay as you go pricing ON PREMISES The use of private cloud deployment of resources using virtualization and resource management tools to deploy and manage applications is one of the deployment models cloud computing A private cloud is privately hosted managed and owned by individuals using it This gives improved and more direct control of the company s data The hardware is held on premisesHYBRID A hybrid cloud makes use of both the public cloud and the private cloud A connection of infrastructure and applications between cloud based resources and existing resources that are not located in the cloud is established This is often used to extend and grow an organization s infrastructure into the cloud while connecting cloud resources to the internal systems The Cloud is the easiest to use as it offers on demand delivery of IT resources over the internet while you only pay for what you use ConclusionThe cloud is the now and future data centers will soon be forgotten when every migrate to the cloud Vendors like AWS have made it very easy to use cloud MIGRATE NOW
