their customers In Part One of our series we reviewed the trends of and then we looked at the following five customer communication channels which will be key in Voice and videoSocial mediaSMSEmailLive chat and self serviceOur conclusion however was that the ability of a business to reach its customers effectively hinges not on which channel to use but rather on the plurality of channels to be used The most effective way for businesses to reach their customersーand find new onesーis through the omnichannel experience It s only through an omnichannel solution that your business can direct the right messaging at the right time to the right customers In this article we re going to explore how to get started in implementing an omnichannel solution There are many services out there that can help you reach your customers through an omnichannel solution including Mitel Reve and Twilio just to name a few For our example we ll use Moments from Infobip This is a great solution to use for examples because it allows you to leverage all of these channels with low code or no code solutions Let s walk through how it works Setting up Communication with Infobip MomentsFor this walkthrough we ll assume that you re already logged in to the Infobip Portal The first thing we ll do is create a Person on whom we ll use a communication flow which we ll create shortly In the navigation on the left hand side of the UI click the “People icon shown with the arrow in the image below Now that you re in the People section you ll want to create a new person profile using the button shown below If you re following along and testing this out yourself I recommend using your real phone number and email so you can understand the experience as the customer After filling out the information click “Create Person to be redirected to that person entry Let s validate the info by going to the “Contact Information section Click the “Verify Number link to send a one time text to the number you entered this will allow you to receive text messages from Moments Single customer communication flowsWith our Person representing our customer created we can now create a flow that will handle the communication paths with our customer Click the Moments icon in the navigation menu On the right hand side there will be a “Create Flow button that will take us to the list of default flows We will select the “Reminder flow which will leverage the SMS send and receive capabilities of Moments When you click “Use you ll be taken to a flowchart style UI The flow will remain mostly the same but we will add one step to send an email if no response is received via text when using this flow Near the center of the flow you will see the evaluate SMS block with conditions listed underneath By default the “If no response in day condition results in exiting the communication flow However maybe our customer just missed the text and needs an extra reminder First delete the “Exit flow block connected to the “If no response condition After deleting the exit block you will be able to add an element by clicking the arrow next to the “If no response condition and selecting “Send Email The form for sending email has several options allowing you to define who the sender is use custom email templates and even schedule when the email should be sent For the sake of brevity we will leave these details up to you to fill in For now though you have the foundation to create a person and a flow as well as the ability to modify the flow to meet your needs Broadcasting to large audiencesNext let s look at broadcast functionality in Moments used for sending a message to a large audience Navigate back to the main Moments section on the Infobip platform and click the “Create Broadcast button In this case we just have one Person to send a message to but you can select multiple Person entries to send an SMS to several people at once Fill out the necessary details and then click “Continue to Preview The preview of a broadcast provides a realistic example of how your SMS will look to your customer along with a breakdown of the cost the number of recipients and the options you have defined The final step in the broadcast process is to click “Launch Again because we only have one recipient defined the completion of the broadcast happens quite quickly If you entered a valid phone number when creating the Person entry then you will receive an SMS message Infobip actively manages message sending when processing large broadcasts so that your messages do not get flagged as spam This could result in a bit of extra processing time for a broadcast but it ensures that your customers receive all of your messages Now that our broadcast is complete we can check out the Person Insights view to see that John Doe was included in our broadcast Navigate to the People section and click on “John Doe You ll see the broadcast under the activity feed The activity feed will ensure that you have full visibility of all communications on a customer by customer basis Looking ForwardIf you ask the question What s next for the answer can best be summed up in one wordーgrowth Customer expectations will continue to grow The driving forces behind customer communication in will be ease the number of options and efficacy The number of communication channels will continue to grow There will be more mobile options more online options and more diversity as the demographics continue to evolve Finally the criticality of customer centric communication will grow In your business will need to invest in an omnichannel communication platform to meet customers needs and to ensure a customized and valuable experience Customer acquisition and retention are paramount so using a platform that annotation to use JsExport as it is experimental to use You can get rid of the requirement of adding ExperimentalJsExport in code by declaring it as OptIn in languageSettings for all source sets in your kotlin block kotlin sourceSets all languageSettings apply optIn kotlin js ExperimentalJsExport Limitations As of Kotlin there are heavy limitations on what Kotlin types one can export to JavaScript You will most likely face one of these limitations if you add JS support in an existing KMP library Whenever something is not exportable you would get either an error or a warning Code does not compile with such errorsCode compiles with such warnings but you might have run time issues Collections Kotlin s collections APIs are not exportable so you would have to come up with different strategies to deal with them Some examples would be MapYou would have to remove Map usage from common code that also exports to JS or you would have to have a different implementation on the mobile and js side You can use the kotlin js Json object on the jsMain side and then map it to the Kotlin map whenever needed For JS specific implementation you may also look into using Record from kotlin extensions library ListYou can replace the List usage with an Array to keep the same code for all platforms It may or may not be a simple replacement For example Array would work if only used in an object for parsing an API response Note that having an Array in a Data class would require providing your own equals and hashcode implementations If you want separate implementation for jsMain then kotlin extensions library provides some helpful JS specific classes like Iterator Set and ReadOnlyArray Long Long is not mapped to anything as there is no equivalent in the JavaScript world You would see the non exportable warning if you export Long via Kotlin If you ignore the warning then Long still kinda works It just takes any value from JS Kotlin will receive the input as Long if JavaScript code sends a BigInt It will not work for Typescript unless you set skipLibCheck true in the config as type kotlin Long is not available Kotlin JsExportclass Greeting Suppress NON EXPORTABLE TYPE fun value This worksYou can use Suppress NON EXPORTABLE TYPE to suppress the exportable warning Interface Kotlin interfaces are not exportable It gets annoying when a library has an interface driven design where it exposes the interface in public API rather than a specific implementation Interfaces will be exportable starting upcoming Kotlin We would have to play around with that to see it working There are workarounds to make interfaces work on JavaScript The following are some examples for getting around interfaces Using Implementation Class JsExportinterface HelloInterface fun hello The above code would show the non exportable error You can use the interface indirectly via its implementation class to work around that problem JsExportobject Hello HelloInterface override fun hello define a Kotlin interface in common and mobile platforms and define an external interface for the JS side This approach might not scale well but can be very useful for simple cases commonMainexpect exportable It can create issues for projects that have a lot of existing enums Good news is that its support coming in Kotlin There is also a trick to export and use enums on JS It requires defining a JS specific object with attributes that point to actual enums For example this code won t compile JsExportenum Gender MALE FEMALE Instead you can do this indirectly by re defining them through object fields It works with a non exportable warning Note the warning suppression with annotation Suppress NON EXPORTABLE TYPE ExperimentalJsExport JsExportobject GenderType val male Gender MALE val female Gender FEMALE Sealed classes Sealed classes are exportable but they re buggy as of Kotlin You can export a data or regular class as subclasses inside a Sealed class body but not an object JsExportsealed class State object Loading State This won t be visible data class Done val value String State This would be visible You can work around this problem by moving the subclasses outside the body of the sealed class but then you cannot write it like State Loading It is more of a readability issue in that case Also sealed classes have known issues with typescript binding as well Code mangling The Kotlin compiler mangles the names of the functions and attributes It can be frustrating to deal with mangled names For example JsExportobject Hello HelloInterface override fun hello console log HELLO from HelloInterface Generated JS code for hello method looks like Hello prototype hello svswh k function console log HELLO from HelloInterface We would need to use the JsName annotation to provide a generated name If you see numbers in attribute names like something value on the JS side then it is a sign that you need to provide a controlled name via JsName annotation on the Kotlin side After adding JsName hello in the above example generated code looks like this where there is a new hello method that references hello svswh k internally Hello prototype hello svswh k function console log HELLO from HelloInterface Hello prototype hello function return this hello svswh k Note that JsName is prohibited for overridden members so you would need to set it to a base class property or method Suspended functions You cannot expose suspended functions to JS You would need to convert them into JavaScript Promise object The easiest way to do that would be to wrap suspend calls inside GlobalScope promise suspend call This function comes from Promise kt in the coroutine library It returns a generic type As mentioned earlier some of these issues would get
