7 advice to help you inherit a legacy codebase |
https://dev.to/nicoespeon/7-advice-to-help-you-inherit-a-legacy-codebase-5af8
|
advice to help you inherit a legacy codebaseI wanted to make a recap of the most common and useful advice one can give to tackle Legacy codebases I have a few of my own but I also went out to ask experimented developers about their opinions I ended up with advice Let s dig into these Stay curiousApproach the problem with an open mind Legacy systems are often frustrating to work with Yet you probably aren t the only one in this Ask questions to your colleagues discuss with non technical people look up for information around You may be surprised how much you can discover that wasn t obvious at first sight First get it runningSo many problems to address An overwhelming mess I know the feeling When you are dealing with many problems the most efficient way I know is to start with one and focus on that Can you get the system running on your machine already Start with that Once you get it solved it will help you tackle the other issues You can run it Great Then get the tests running There is no test runner Put one in place Then make sure you can deploy new versions to production And so on…Pick one problem that will help solve others and focus on that Get it done then move to the next one Don t try to tackle everything at once that doesn t work well Take notes as you goWhen you onboard on a new legacy codebase you are in a great position to notice problems As you learn the quirks of the system and how to solve them take notes These don t need to be polished and all Raw Markdown notes would do Put these notes in a place where they are easy to search for That may be Markdown files versioned along with the source code as we do for ADRs I find it useful to take notes for things like How I solved problem X eg I got this error when installing dependencies so I did that and it worked Jargon terms I m not familiar withThe structure of the code where to put thingsA complimentary piece of advice is to train yourself to detect when you make assumptions Refactor as you goThis is very similar to the previous point but turning the dial up a bit As you work with the code your understanding will grow You will have these aha moments Ooooh that s what it does You can capture these learnings in notes and code comments I also recommend you take an extra step and improve the names Functions and variable names are important beacons for understanding When something wasn t obvious at first and it finally clicked take the time to improve the names so the intention is clearer This is easier to do with a fresh pair of eyes A technique I really like is called Exploratory Refactoring or Scratch Refactoring Allow yourself to do rogue changes in the code You won t keep these changes so you don t care if the code still compiles The goal is to interact with the code instead of passively reading it Timebox yourself for min In the end take notes of what you learned and scratch that work Read booksThere is not a ton of resources on dealing with legacy systems But there are a few that are quite good if you ask me Working Effectively with Legacy Code from Michael Feathers is a reference I bet many of you have read it already If you never had the chance then it s the book I would recommend you to read If you have read this one already I listed a few more that I found the most relevant Books blog posts talks screencasts…These resources will expose you to new techniques and approaches These will constitute a useful tool belt for when you are facing a new problem to solve like identifying Seams in existing code so you can write tests for it Write the missing testsTests are particularly useful for reasons Gain an understanding of what the code actually doesReduce the risk of introducing a bug when making changesIdentify the main problems of the code design eg too many hidden dependencies Writing good tests is a skill to practice Writing tests on existing code is even harder because you may need to refactor this code…without tests to have your back That s where reading books and watching talks will help You may already be doing Characterization Testing by intuition There are more techniques and tools that can help you do it faster and safer Obvious candidates for me are Safe Refactorings and Approval Tests You don t need to write all the missing tests Just write enough tests for the code you need to change The time you invest here will be saved in the understanding you gain and the production support you won t have to do Make it better not perfectThe most important advice of all if you ask me This stuff is hard It s overwhelming to work with an existing system built on old technologies patched everywhere yet serving actual people in production It s fine to have a partial understanding of the system Your understanding will grow over time You will have these aha moments You can speed up that process by Talking to peopleTaking notesUsing techniques such as Behavioral AnalysisBe mindful of yourself This is a marathon If you can make it just better every single day time will be on your side When you get overwhelmed by a problem take a break and step away To talk to people take a step back It may not solve your problem but it may also give you new ideas I solved a lot of problems by simply talking to others about them Another good example of the make it better not perfect mindset is this consider you want to automate the deployment process lovely This can be an overwhelming task with a lot of intermediate problems to solve…Now what about this You take notes of the steps that need to be performed to deployYou put these steps in a scriptYou expose this script with a command like if it would deploy it for youThis is a trick I learned from Arlo Belschee I don t recall where though The script won t do the deployment itself In fact it may just start with telling you the manual steps you need to do It s not fully automated yet but You now have a command to run to deploy It reduces the risk of forgetting about a stepYou can iterate to progressively automate each individual step Over time this process will be more and more automated But it doesn t have to be automated or nothing Only a Sith deals in absolutes What other advice would you give |

How to Become a Cyber Security Engineer |
https://dev.to/faiz1215/how-to-become-a-cyber-security-engineer-9hh
|
How to Become a Cyber Security EngineerAs the business world becomes increasingly digitalized the need for cyber security experts grows every day According to the Internet Society s Online Trust Alliance estimates the cost of cybercrime at around billion annually Cyber security engineers are tasked with protecting companies from costly risks How Cyber Security Engineers DoCyber security analysts are able to keep companies protected from a range of online threats They also safeguard the network systems that companies rely on These systems can be basic and primarily in house however they usually require connecting with outside or wide area networks WAN Also don t forget the virtual networks and systems that permit employees to gain access to company data when working remotely Although external connections could create more risks the risk always exists That is why a cybersecurity expert is a crucial part of the equation Their job involves conducting tests and assessments to control and limit the possibility of cybercriminals gaining access to the network Security experts are security experts is a key part of the technology team Particularly they utilize security technology to prevent the threat which allows members of the IT team to concentrate on developing secure solutions for networks instead of focusing on security problems A cybersecurity professional is typically responsible for the development of trust based systems into secure ones This typically involves a thorough analysis of a company s networks systems to make them trust based systems to ones that are not To achieve this an engineer will conduct a full audit an analysis of intrusions and a review of individual access rights However in the event that security is in place and trustless security is in place a cybersecurity expert might concentrate on the development and implementation of cybersecurity solutions They could be a part of the existing security design or need new technology or software to defend against cyber attacks Enroll in Cyber security course online to learn more In what ways Cyber Security Supports the Modern Business LandscapeThe more essential aspects of business change from the basic internal networks towards cloud based computing The greater the risk that critical systems face security threats A cyber security engineer is equipped to reduce or eliminate these dangers So the company is able to continue its operations without spending additional resources recuperating from attacks Since they play this vital job security engineers play cyber security engineers are vital for the success of modern companies If you have a security engineer who has obtained the appropriate qualifications they are able to apply their expertise to a wide variety of industries This includes wholesale finance retail education manufacturing and much more Qualifications to be a Cyber Security EngineerTo get a security job you must have an undergraduate degree or a master s level computer science degree If an individual has a long history with cyber security and enhances their work knowledge with ongoing training and education it will make them more qualified for the job Most companies nowadays are willing to overlook the lack of a computer science degree if you hold the appropriate cyber security certificates such as Security CEH CISSP for example Even if you hold an education in computer science professional certifications are essential What is a Cybersecurity Engineer accountable for The role of the cyber security engineer differs between companies However there are some elements that all cyber security professionals share Security of the Organization from data breaches and LeaksThe company s information is usually the most important asset One of the most important aspects of the cyber security engineer s role is to ensure that information is safe as well as reliable and precise This requires keeping data behind firewalls that shield it from leaking To ensure the accuracy of the data organizations need to guard against those who would like to modify it to hurt the company or gain the competitors Additionally a security engineer ensures that only those who require access to certain areas have the authorization to access the area So it reduces the number of individuals who have access to or use sensitive information is minimized which reduces the risk of a leak or breach Avoiding the misuse of sensitive dataThe information held by a company could be susceptible to hackers who could use it in a variety of ways In many cases organizations keep secret information on the key elements of their business or technology If someone steals the information and uses it to gain an advantage they could provide their competitors with a substantial advantage Furthermore a competitor may use the plans a business can use to increase their services or collaborate with other companies to try to gain an advantage A security engineer s job as a cyber security engineer is to prevent these data from entering the hands of intruders However many businesses face another threat that is even more serious the theft of confidential information about customers Names addresses Social Security numbers as well as answers to commonly asked security questions are all important to the hacker Although hackers may not make use of this information for themselves they could sell it to online marketplaces like the dark web Cyber security engineers aim is to stop the misuse of data especially since hackers may use it to aid in identity theft In some instances the thief does not require complete customer profiles they just need certain pieces of information to link with other information the company already has Because of this even businesses that have basic information about their customers within their systems need the assistance of a security engineer Security engineer In addition Cyber security experts protect financial data Cybercriminals often target credit cards as well as bank accounts or other financial information of clients If they can find a way to access databases that contain this information and sell it they could either do the data or use it to purchase illicit goods or transfer funds or commit other forms of fraud With a range of security tools an cyber security engineer analyzes a company s weaknesses develops an effective security plan and implements the strategy Then they must assess whether the strategies worked and make any adjustments that are needed Performing Risk AnalysesCyber security engineers are often found finding risky areas within an organization and evaluating the vulnerability of an enterprise This requires a deep understanding of the latest hacking techniques and malware The knowledge of how criminals infiltrate systems is then used to identify the weakest components of an organization s security structure Risk analysis goes beyond analyzing the structure and tools used by the company s cyber security The worth of each individual s digital assets plays a crucial part A cyber security engineer must be aware of the type of enterprise a company is involved in so that they know what assets require the most security For example a store that accepts credit card transactions may require the strictest security measures to guard its customers names as well as card numbers Additionally if a number of users are able to access this information the cyber security engineer should be aware of who is required to view this information and who doesn t need access This reduces the risk for the business After a security professional has identified an organization s attack points and weaknesses they can suggest or suggest a plan to safeguard your most precious assets and also guard against the weakest components of the current security architecture Protection Against Internal threatsMany of the most dangerous risks originate inside an organization Therefore an IT security engineer must be able to recognize these threats and minimize the risk Many internal threats result from those who are trying for ways to exploit their rights Sometimes a small error could expose the login credentials of someone else who could use them to access the network Thus one of the most efficient methods to minimize the chance of being harmed is to adopt an authentication system that is multifactor It requires that users produce multiple forms of identity before they are granted access to the internet a particular section of the network as well as an app It typically involves at least one of these something that a person recognizes something that they carry on their body or a biometric feature like fingerprints or facial features There are a variety of technologies that a cyber security engineer can employ to implement this type of security measure Working knowledge of the latest multifactor authentication methods is thus a crucial requirement required for all cybersecurity security professionals |

How to recycle your used and unwanted gadgets |
https://www.engadget.com/2018-04-21-how-to-recycle-gadgets-electronics-earth-day.html?src=rss
|
How to recycle your used and unwanted gadgetsYou re probably used to sorting your garbage into bins green for paper or blue for plastic and glass But when it comes to electronics we re still used to selling those off or tossing them into the trash heap Unfortunately our gadget addiction has real consequences for the planet making it imperative that we dispose of everything responsibly Sure you can try parting with your stuff for cash but it s a pain and it can be tough if not impossible to find someone who wants a busted Xbox or year old CRT Few places have curbside pickup ーin fact some localities make it illegal to leave electronics for the garbage collectors ーso you re going to have to find a reputable center to take it We ve gathered some of the resources to help you dispense of your broken and unwanted computers televisions and any other gadget flotsam that s been taking up space in your closet National chainsThere is no national electronics recycling law at this time so you won t find any federal programs to assist you with getting rid of old devices The USPS does run a program for federal agencies and their employees but it s not available to the general public Instead the rest of us have to rely on nationwide retailers to toss out our old stuff Best BuyBest Buy has more than locations in the United States so it s likely you have one nearby where you can drop stuff off You just need to take it to the customer service counter They ll issue you a receipt too but keep in mind that you can t claim the drop off as a deduction on your taxes because Best Buy isn t a charity You can even recycle televisions and monitors though you ll be charged a fee of per item to cover the higher costs of transporting and disassembling them Consumers in California are not charged the fee while locations in Connecticut and Pennsylvania will not accept televisions at all If you re turning in a printer you ll get up to a voucher toward the purchase of a new Epson EcoTank printer Also be aware that Best Buy limits you to three items per household per day including up to two televisions StaplesRecycling your stuff at Staples is similar to Best Buy ーjust bring your products to the customer service counter But it s more limited in that you can only bring in seven items a day and the store won t accept televisions at all Staples Rewards members also receive a small credit of for every used ink cartridge they turn in up to a month Office DepotOffice Depot has more than locations but unlike Staples and Best Buy it won t recycle your old gadgets for free If you re only getting rid of a few phones or batteries those can be turned in at no charge For everything else you must purchase a Tech Recycling Box which costs or depending on the size Once you have the box you can fill it with as many items as you want provided they all fit inside including smaller televisions So it s a great deal if you have a lot of stuff you want to dispose of These can be turned in either in person or by mail Home Depot and LowesYou can dispose of old rechargeable batteries old phones and CFL bulbs in the dropoff boxes at any of Home Depot or Lowe s locations The bins are usually located in the front of the store and Home Depot has an pound limit on individual items ManufacturersIf you can t make it to a retail location especially when you need to get rid of only one or two items many companies offer recycling programs for their own products They ll even pay for shipping Some run their own programs while others use outside organizations We ve outlined policies from a handful of manufacturers below AmazonWhile Amazon would love to direct you to its trade in program you re probably reading this post because there s stuff you can t sell and for those items Amazon offers mail in recycling You can send in your busted Kindles Fire TVs and even Dash Buttons as well as select peripherals like keyboards and mice You ll just need to fill out some forms online and generate a shipping label which you can slap on any box Drop it off at a UPS location and you re good to go Amazon will cover all the costs AppleAppleIf your iPhone or MacBook is still in good shape you should consider selling it but if it s old or beat up you can still score a gift card by turning it into Apple s recycling program For iPhones iPad and Apple Watches you ll be asked to fill out a form attesting to the product s condition and given a trade in quote with a working iPhone going for and an iPhone Plus scoring you For Macs you ll be asked to provide a serial number as well Though Apple won t give you cash for anything it deems old or unacceptable you can still mail it in or bring it to any Apple Store so it can be responsibly disposed of DellDell offers drop off recycling via a partnership with Goodwill Not every location participates but there are more than that do And because it s a charity you may even be able to deduct it as a donation on your taxes Dell also has a mail back program on its site where you can generate a shipping label and drop the package off at a FedEx location instead EpsonYou can ship old products back to Epson by simply creating a shipping label on its site and dropping it off at a FedEx location Or just drop it off at a Best Buy location for a or voucher toward a new Epson printer HPIf you can HP recommends taking its products to the nearest Best Buy But if that s not feasible the company participates in a program that will even buy back some items You ll be asked to fill out a form with the make model and condition and the recycler will email you a prepaid shipping label to mail the package within days If you re doing a buyback you ll receive a paper check in the mail Because this isn t an in house program with HP you can also send in items from other companies ーcheck the drop down list for firms like Canon and Toshiba as well as more obscure and out of business manufacturers Other manufacturersMany other companies use outside recyclers to dispose of their products and you ll often see the same names popping up again and again across different manufacturers This should simplify things in some cases ーyou should be able to send in products from multiple sources in one package You just need to fill in the make and model to generate a prepaid shipping label However different states have different rules on what you can return so the drop downs for selecting your product may vary by area Two major recycling companies you ll notice a lot are RLGA which covers Acer Canon Google Intel Lenovo Microsoft and Motorola and MRM which recycles products for Alcatel BlackBerry Barnes amp Noble nook TCL and Toshiba PhonesCell phones are the easiest gadget to recycle ーif you haven t already decided to sell yours off on eBay or via sites like Decluttr and ecoATM But if you can t or won t make some cash off of it you can send it to CallRecycle which has drop off centers all over the country in many chain stores including Lowes and Home Depot It will also accept rechargeable batteries Cell Phones for Soldiers accepts phones in any condition and sells them to refurbishers or recyclers The proceeds go toward purchasing phone cards for troops so they can call their friends and family back home To be clear the phones are not given directly to the soldiers The four major US carriers ーVerizon AT amp T T Mobile and Sprint ーall offer free recycling You can trade in your old device in store or send it in for a credit toward a new phone or let them straight up recycle it AT amp T also participates in Cell Phones for Soldiers If you do decide to try your luck with ecoATM to see if your old phone is still worth a few bucks and it turns out it s worth nothing you can at least rest easy knowing that the company will also recycle your phone responsibly StatesThere may not be a national law dictating that you must recycle your electronics but at least states have passed rules that vary widely on what they demand of manufacturers and consumers Almost all states that do collect products for recycling provide this service free with the bill footed by the companies in some way Most provide some local programs to help you get rid of your stuff regardless of whether recycling your gadgets is required or optional States where you can no longer dispose of electronics in the regular trash and must recycle them include California Connecticut Illinois Indiana Maine Minnesota New Jersey New York North Carolina Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina Vermont West Virginia Wisconsin and the District of Columbia The following states have laws requiring manufacturers to pay for recycling but you the consumer are not actually required to recycle your electronics Hawaii Maryland Michigan Missouri Oklahoma Texas Utah Virginia and Washington The following states have some special circumstances worth noting Connecticut Does not allow recycling centers to charge you a fee for turning in electronics so many organizations and retailers that would usually charge for recycling televisions and monitors do not accept them Because you cannot dispose of them curbside you can take them to a municipal transfer station for free New York If you live in a New York City apartment building with or more units contact your landlord about getting an ecycleNYC drop off box installed in your building It s super convenient and free Pennsylvania Does not allow retailers to charge you a fee to recycle so places like Best Buy and Staples will not accept televisions or monitors Many recycling centers have also closed as a result of underfunding Some nonprofit recyclers may still accept the items and you should check to see if your local government is hosting any drop off events Lancaster and Dauphin Counties also still run civic recycling programs Virginia This state does not have a dedicated statewide recycling program but some localities run their own programs including Fairfax Loudoun and Rockbridge counties and cities like Arlington Check each municipality s site for details |

‘Diamond Hands’ offers a good, if narrow portrait of the GameStop stock squeeze |

Diamond Hands offers a good if narrow portrait of the GameStop stock squeezeIn early a group of retail investors realized that GameStop shares had been recklessly over shorted by major investors Big funds certain that the retailer was about to collapse had shorted percent of the company s entire public shareholding Individuals who co ordinated their efforts via a subreddit called r WallStreetBets knew that they could exploit this vulnerability They bought up all of the outstanding GameStop stock and drove up the price forcing the big funds to pay over the odds to avoid losing a fortune when their bet spectacularly backfired It s this story that is outlined more or less in MSNBC s new documentary Diamond Hands The Legend of WallStreetBets which debuted at SXSW It tells the story from the perspective of some of the individuals who signed up early and held on to their stake Some used the squeeze to make a fortune while others came away with a more modest but still fantastic profit The decision to focus on these personal stories makes for an engaging tale at the human level albeit one that s very one sided The film s general thesis is that the short squeeze took place mostly thanks to the internet and what it has enabled Without Reddit to coordinate the trades and Robinhood acting at least at first as a way around the stuffed shirt brokerages none of this would have happened There is a suggestion that people were motivated to get into investing as a consequence of the stimulus checks Which I don t agree with mostly because people weren t sinking thousands of dollars into GameStop if all they had was a spare to their name It also affords as far as I m concerned a surprising amount of time to talk about the broken social contract most millennials feel hurt by As useless as the term is since “millennial means anyone aged to it s weird to see MSNBC allowing those under to talk about their plight Perhaps this marks a new and refreshing change as people who have lived through the last twenty years of utter turmoil are now deemed respectable enough to appear on the news The other noticeable thing is the lack of expert commentary from the usual types of Very Serious Men in Finance The big money fund types that lost their shirts on GameStop chose not to appear in the film and so their story isn t told here Similarly you get about five sentences from Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev who became the internet s most hated figure when his app chose to restrict trading on the platform potentially prematurely ending the GameStop squeeze The inequitable screen time makes the documentary s coverage of some of the major players fairly merciless Given Robinhood s launch coincided with SXSW in it s interesting to watch nearly minutes of people saying that the app screwed them over at the same festival seven years later We also don t get to speak to Keith Gill who as Roaring Kitty was at the heart of the effort to craft the initial short squeeze There is one annoyance that it s worth being aware of is the film s decision to create a visual style that apes the language of Reddit memes Lots of gaudy iconography remixes of old viral videos and the sort of amateur kitsch awfulness you see a lot online It reminded me of an experiment Charlie Brooker did on the excesses of youth TV He piled a bunch of teenagers into a screening room and told them to signal when they got bored while they watched a bunch of clips from screechy in your face teen TV shows What held them in rapt attention however was a sequence from an Adam Curtis documentary with its slow narration and lack of any visual pizzazz The point being that just because a subject deals with kitschy out there imagery from the internet you don t need to jazz up the visuals to make your story entertaining Diamond Hands The Legend of WallStreetBets premieres on MSNBC on April th at pm ET |

Spotify adds access controls to collaborative playlistsCollaborative playlists are a great way to built mixes with other users on Spotify but until now you didn t have a ton of control over who could contribute to and see your work Today the streaming service is adding new levels of control for those playlists allowing users to keep closer tabs on who has access to them ーincluding the ability to share collaborative mixes with large public groups or keeping them private First Spotify will give the playlist creator the ability to invite or remove users from collaborating You will also be able to set collaborative playlists to private so no one can listen to search for or view those mixes except for the people you ve given access At any time you can add or remove who can work on playlists and who can follow them and Spotify says all of the new controls will roll out starting this week nbsp Expanded controls for collaborative playlists follows Spotify s addition of a block feature back in November Before last fall you could block artists so they wouldn t pop up in the app but blocking another user required submitting a request to customer service Anyone you block will no longer be able to access your page public playlists or see your listening activity And of course the move is reversible if you change your mind nbsp |
