Dating in Japan and different ideas about weightI ve been dating a japanese guy for like a year and many aspects of our relationship are wonderful but one thing that I really struggle with are our differing ideas about weight I m American and in my view expressing your opinions about other s weight and how they eat is really rude with some exceptions of course I ve always considered myself relatively thin I m kg amp cm… but admittedly I would say I m classically “skinny fat My bf although he would never outright say it obviously wants me to lose weight he regularly points out the chubby parts of my body or reminds me of the high caloric content of snacks I choose to eat It makes me feel pretty bad about myself I feel like many people here very openly support toxic aspects of diet culture like heavily restrictive eating but it s just not something that I feel comfortable with my partner expecting from me Is this just something I have to put with dating in japan I mean it s not like I can just expect him to change his ideas about it overnight but like is this just the norm Edit to add I think part of the reason he does this is because I ve been trying to get in better shape for a while now and I think he thinks he s helping I guess from my viewpoint his comments are very hurtful but I don t think that s his intention I think he wants to help and comments like what I described just seem more normalized here submitted by u thorbitch to r japanlife link comments |
